The popular team always loses due to getting less matches, having more inexperienced players, and experienced "competitive" players actually opting for the less popular choice in order to win.

This happened in Splatoon 1 when wins changed to x6, and it's going to happen now with this system.

Never pick your team based on your preferences or choice of waifu. Always wait and see, and then opt for the less popular team.
