I honestly thought the sticker gimmick was interesting, there was just no reason to use it.

From what I saw Color Splash at least tried to have memorable characters with what was allowed to them. Shit like the funguy shuffle, the toad brigade or whatever the fuck, etc. I dropped sticker star at the boo mansion and I can only remember the sniffit quiz and fucking wiggler.

Putting /ourguy/ Junior in the worse Paper Mario game yet.

Random thought: Every time I see a bad game, there's always the caveat of people coming in and saying the music is good.

Boss fights are either 2EZ snore fests (with the relevant auto-win sticker) or essentailly impossible. Random encounters drain your long-term resources, instead of replenishing them. No interesting side characters; only generic Toads.
>>
>>385892414
Oh, and I forgot about a lack of Pit of 1000 trials, or any particularly enjoyable sidequests (I guess they're not strictly neccessary, but RPGs feel pretty empty without any, and Paper Mario had a tradition of copious and enjoyable side-content.)

It's not even that good. You are actively disincentivized to go into battle. If it was just that combat was a waste of time, I might be able to stomach finishing the game. Instead, there is always a net loss for going into battle because you will lose stickers, get less coins than the stickers you spent were worth, and (I think) you will even lose coins if you just run.

Sticker Star is worse since Color Splash improved on locations, writing & while the story is mostly rehashed it handled it better, beyond that though it took some steps back in terms of gameplay due to boss fights forcing you to have the Thing card or you game over near the end of the fight wasting your time, all attack animations are way slower, it having more command prompts before attacking, the card menu being all 1 big row instead of multiple rows of attacks to select & it not giving you clear enough information on how much HP an enemy has & how much an attack deals to said enemy making strategizing a bit of a nuisance & making you waste cards in hopes you dealt enough damage to the enemies.

I wish I could love this game, but the biggest flaw that I had was that fact you had to fight the boss the first time just to find out it's weakness. This was bullshit, although everything else was pretty good.

Remind yourself that Undertale would be just another shitty forgotten indie game if it didn't have a great soundtrack.
Good music doesn't make a good game.
>>
>>385891281
You know what, I'm even gonna say the inverse of this is true. Remember how one of the biggest complaints people kept moaning on about with BotW was how they didn't like the soundtrack?

It's almost as when folks don't have anything of substance to talk about when it comes to compliments and criticism, they latch onto a wholly subjective matter like music.
>>
>>385890973
Thanks for the insight
>>385891203
Nah it was good. They fixed almost all the issues with Sticker Star, and made it actually fun to collect the useless shit (coloring the colorless spots in every level was a cool idea)
The boss fights and levels were varied and interesting, and generally, they let you know ahead of time what sticker you'd need for the boss (cue the picture of the second boss fight where a shyguy repeatedly says YOU'RE GONNA NEED A BONE STICKER. I agree, that was a bit much, but most of them aren't like that).
Back to the level design, I liked the unfurl hammer technique, and it was made better by the fact that the game knew you fucking hated fighting enemies, so they'd stick a ton of enemies by the unfurl hammer object
The dialogue was witty and interesting, and a lot of the time I went out of my way to see what a character had to say. The puzzles, while not too difficult, were interesting enough.
Also the OST was godlike, especially the Shy Bandit and the purple pirate shanty

You didn't refute a single one of my points
That being said, the combat system is not pointless, because there are stickers that are collectible only from combat, and it ups your paint meter.
It's not a bad game by any means, it just lacks what the other two Paper Mario games had

>You didn't refute a single one of my points

It doesn't need to be refuted when you have a core aspect of the game that is fundamentally flawed.

Raising the paint meter is the laziest attempt at fixing the issue Sticker Star brought, and changes nothing. Fighting enemies is something that should almost always be avoided.

I disagree about it being a good game because
>Slow ass repetitive battle system that only has basic A-presses (no variety on how you deal the attack)
>Battle Menuing is longer than is should take and organization is worse than Sticker Star even (at least you don’t have to fit it in a book admittedly)
>"EXP" is pointless beyond the first few level ups since coins are given to you everywhere (Kamek, paint spots, Shy Bandit, Mini-game doors, Roshambo, etc.) and you can use the thousands of coin in shops and the Battle Spinner (literally hit the 9999 cap before fighting the second boss), basically killing incentive
>Battle Spinner is abusable since you can just keep getting and using Thing replicas every turn for 10 coins (just count the cards if you really can't pick which one you want while it's spinning)
>Outside of battles all solutions rely on Cut-out or your Paint Hammer, no variety in puzzle solutions basically
>Backtracking for Mini-Paint Stars on-tier with TTYD (Kiwano Temple & Sunglow Ridge you do twice with no differences, Mossrock Theater you do half the level twice with no differences, Plum Park has a 2 exits (at least it's a small area), etc.)
>At one moment there is a sketchy Shy Guy is willing to sell you cards for Snifit or Whiffit, but you'll need to drop 30 cards if you're at the 99 cap like I was and weren't even aware you needed those cards for the quiz you'll most likely get a insta-Game Over for not having the right cards
>All Bosses (not mini-bosses) need you to have the right Thing card
>You don't know if you have said Thing card until you need to use it, if you don't you instantly die
>Random spontaneous moments like being chased by a Chain Chomp where you can insta-Game Over (the originals had similar moments but you were generally timed, given some que or it was for a joke where you'd purposely have to do it)

(1/2)
>>
>>385897545
>>385897783
In addition, raising the paint meter was only added because fans were groaning that, once again, there's no reason to fight

>Story starts off promising since Peach isn't kidnapped and there's a mystery but it goes right back to status quo after World 1 with how he kidnaps Peach
>Bowser is the final boss with the only difference being he's possessed, but he's still just being evil so it doesn't change much, it's not like the Black Paint has a body or character like the Concept Art shows
>Bowser only has 2 scenes talking (After World 1 and during the final boss)
>Most NPCs are generic Toads & Shy Guys
>Only a few have truly unique designs like Foreman and the pirate ones, the others like Professor are just plain Yellow
>A lot of them share similar personalities
>At least Huey is good though, while he's a bit similar to the Toads personality wise he's not a bitch like Kersti and you develop some form of bond with him
>Enemy Variety is mostly recolored Shy Guys & Snifits (the museum shows this off well)

(2/2)

I'm probably forgetting shit, it's been almost a year now since I 100% it.
>>
>>385897609
I know that one exists, and so does Sticker Star, I was only referring to the two RPG ones though. I actually love Super Paper Mario, especially the level where you're supposed to fight your way through a gauntlet of enemies but that world is ended by the black hole
>>385897783
Then maybe you're looking at it the wrong way, as in, fighting enemies is the punishment for playing poorly. There's usually a way to avoid enemies pretty easily, and the more major paint stars you've collected, the more enemies you can just hammer/jump on and instagib
>>
What were Color Splash's sales?
>>
Reminder.
>>
>>385898054
VGchartz has it at 800k but take that with a grain of salt as they're known to be unreliable. It definitely bombed though.
>>

>Then maybe you're looking at it the wrong way, as in, fighting enemies is the punishment for playing poorly. There's usually a way to avoid enemies pretty easily, and the more major paint stars you've collected, the more enemies you can just hammer/jump on and instagib

That doesn't make any sense, since the game made a point of showing the cards and flicking things as being a major new addition to the game, and something that made it unique to the Wii U. If it was purely a punishment, there would be no effort there.

This is a game that is just flawed from the concept stages. Like people sat down and tried to think up good ideas, and failed.
