MGS1 was a game, pure and simple.
MGS2 was a story with gameplay elements, but the story was always the point.
MGS3 was a careful balance of story and gameplay elements, but a very subtle bland of each, relying more on exterior pop culture references to impart the ludonarrative scope on the player.
MGS4 was this jarring leap into true immersion that the world simply wasn't ready for.
MGSV took the leap into true art from 4, and couched it with the accessibility of 3 to create the perfect ludonarrative experience that people are still absorbing, reflecting on, and trying to understand on a daily basis 2 years on.

The whole series shows a startling growth and final realization of a brand new standard in the cross-functionality of narrative and gameplay.

Yeah it really is pretty bad. It's way too linear, by the third level it becomes an escort mission and you are punished for exploring at your own pace. 4th level is just a Nostalgia trip that has very little stealth in it. And the 5th level is pretty much just a boss rush.

I wouldn't even say the gameplay of these games are great (I haven't played V yet though). They all have acceptable stealth but there's nothing special about it, there are way better stealth games out there. And the gunplay from the first person perspective is horrendous simply because you have to aim with an analog stick, the boss fights would be a lot more enjoyable if these games were available on PC and you could aim with a mouse.
