It sucks. I can't defend it. I'm a sucker for Metroid, though. I'll be getting the game and both amiibos (fuck zss) even though I can pirate the game easily. But in all honesty, I wouldn't mind extra content being physical as opposed to digital. I'm in my late 20's, but I would've killed for amiibos as a kid just to share with friends for extra content here and there. This model doesn't work for adults as well, though. Purchasable content that isn't a legit expansion pack is still degeneracy in its own rite.

I only own four amiibos. Mega Man, Daisy, Samus, and Cloud. I get them for about $9 new and it's better than spending a fuck ton of money on a (albeit, neat) figma figure.

Funny story, I recently dug through storage and found my old monochrome Game Boy, and bought a used copy of the original Metroid II off eBay. I have to say, the original game is still very playable despite its age, and the remake doesn't seem to do anything substantial to improve upon the game's formula. It's just bells and whistles and shoehorned nonsense like melee counters. And it's probably designed to be somehow more linear.

So yeah, definitely skipping this purchase. I currently don't even own a 3DS. There's really no incentive to drop that much money on a platform where such a vast amount of content requires additional purchases like DLC or Amiibos. At least any games I buy for my Game Boy are actually complete as is.

This is unfortunately what the original game is. There are three sets of Chozo ruins you come across that involve a little exploration to uncover hidden missile pods and energy tanks, but the game is otherwise incredibly linear.

And yet Nintendo may somehow manage to have the remake be MORE linear than that. Like you said, it may very well be a series of corridors. They might even remove the Chozo ruins sections entirely, or at least water them down into a series of simplistic hallways like the rest of the game.
