First thing that comes to my mind would be Ludwigs second phase in Bloodborne. That transisition, the music, him regaining some of his humanity back just so he can go out fighting as a man, not just a monster.

Yep. Wade through one of the worst areas in the series and be greeted by a very cliche soundtrack, a boring mini-boss, and ultimately lead to nowhere. Except a weapon no one uses, a covenant that rarely worked and had nothing worthwhile, and the sheer delight of having to go all the way back up through one of the worst area in the series. I think it ended appropriately. SH4 should have never been forced to be an SH game and it should have not been rushed, that was a shame. And of course everything coming out after SH4 might as well not exist.
But I think the series was pretty much perfect with the three games. Honestly, I'd even argue the third one was a bit unnecessary, but SH1 fans and people who actually got invested in the mythos were not a minority, so who am I to complain.

It is a shame that we never really got a proper spiritual successor and that to my knowing, few or no games managed to rival it, or follow up on it.

It absolutely starts falling apart the second they start to introduce their god-awful sob drama into the picture. Then it starts to play it's fucking idiotic gender stereotype reversal bullshit in such an unbelivably tired and worn out way that even I had to be annoyed, and this shit usually does not bother me.

And it's definitely the moment where it goes "No, EVERYONE CAN BE THE BIG HERO" that it's clear the morons have absolutely no idea what to do with the idea, the environment and the genre.

The first episode still relies mostly on snappy humor, does not bog down the stuff with drama that is both badly written and just entirely unfitting the context, and actually produces a relatively fresh and fun premise explicitly revolving around the idea that not everyone is the damn big action hero.
Even the basic continuity starts to fall apart. They even start fucking up the funny between-chapters transitions.

I was really on board with the idea at the start too. But man, what a fucking wasted opportunity.

The Void's endings are actually largely meaningless. What really matters is what happens within the game, the actual individual endings and ending cutscenes are just... kinda there. It is pretty fucking hard to understand in general. And let's not mince words: The Void in particular can be pretty pretentious. It is also very clever.

In general:
The entirety of The Void's main ambition is to create a reasonably accurate translation of the opening poem (which itself is about existential dread) into an actual gameplay experience. If you listen to wht the poem says, you basically know what 70%
of the game is about. Rest is about possible solution to existential anxiety, which involves an act of transcendence: basically doing something that would be more important that your measily existence. Presumably, each of the different endings represent a different type of way to transcend yourself, with allusions to creation - of a child, of a work of art, etc...


As for Pathologic. Well, boy, that is a whole another can of worms. Unlike The Void, which is largely VERY allegorical and can be more-or-less boiled down to psychological anxieties and very broad sentiments, Pathologic is really actually very complicated and does not have a simple interpretation key.

It doesn't really. It's an average TPS that starts with a fairly dated campy tone that some people like but the game starts to take itself very seriously towards the end which is odd considering the plot is not just unoriginal, it's largely derivative of some of the most prominent sci-fi in existence. Also, it has "bros" and "waifus" and for some people any game that gives you that is automatically great.

I'm not usually one for poems, but that opening one has always stuck with me.

Same here. I really am basically deaf to poetry and I still remember this damn thing in it's entirety. Not sure why it's so damn powerful. I mean the poem is good, it's no trivial piece (it was written by Luís Vaz de Camões, considered routinely to be the Portugese greatest poet from what I can tell...) but it seems work particularly well in the context of that opening.

Well, of course, later on it becomes increasingly obvious that it IS the key to understanding the actual game. So maybe that made it ultimately so memorable - it's proper "synchronization" with what you experience right within the game.

Shame the rest of the poetry the game includes seemed to have suffered hugely during the english translation.

People know that Pathologic was originally poorly translated, but few people realize that while it's never nearly as obvious, the damage the poor english localization has done to Void might be even greater.

You're right that few people realize it, though. The dialogue flows well and it's certainly well-delivered, whoever does the voices for the various Colors has my undying admiration, so it's hard to tell anything was ever off in the first place.
