There's been a huge demand for a Battle Royale or Hunger Games-style video game for decades. I think this game was just lucky enough to become popular right after the popularity of DayZ and the Hunger Games films were starting to die down.

I honestly doubt it's going to remain this popular a year later, but I can totally understand why so many people seem to be addicted to it. It's just not my type of game though.

I have just under 200 hours and I've gotten killed in a boat plenty of times. People have the higher ground over you ALWAYS. Yeah, you're less likely to get spotted, but saying it's harder to die in a boat is just retarded. You can get sniped from someone on a bridge or hill piss easy

It is though. I don't know how to prove to you that it is. You have 3 km of coastline to leave from you don't need to get a boat directly under the bridges. It's just inherently safer. The only time you're at an real risk is right when you get on the boat which you have the same risk in a car or if you're approaching land and there is already someone there but the boat provides cover.

I bought it on a whim and refunded it. It was kinda fun. The RNG aspect of it could have gotten annoying, but at the same time it felt like a game I could play for hours.

My only real issue with it was that performance is garbage, so I figure I'll just wait for it on sale or something, maybe performance will improve by then.

Successful multiplayer games these days introduce as much randomness as they can while hiding it behind player choice.
Take league/dota for example, the in game randomness is rarely game changing but the unique player choices result in something completely random from a player perspective.
It's the same in PUBG, the mechanics are deterministic, but the game comes down to who spots who first. In a one on one this could be bearable, but this dicethrow is done every time you run across a field. In MOBAS the equivalent is the team you get thrown into.
These kinds of games become a bore when you realize you've reached a point past which you cannot improve your win ratio significantly due to the format.

Because my friends play it. Personally I don't like it and I've never played it solo yet I have 146 hours on it.
There is one thing I really hate about this game though. During specific actions the game starts dropping frames badly. For me it's when I scope in/iron sight and start shooting, the beginning of a firefight, snapping a camera back to default, & red zone bombardment.
This makes it hugely frustrating and sometimes just makes me stop playing with my friends since I felt I've let them down thanks to terrible optimization or whatever it is this game has.
