No. They had a fucking formula with Unleashed/Colours that worked well enough to base future games around it. But they can't seem to get it through their fucking heads that making a new gimmick playstyle for every game has been the fucking problem since they went 3D. Generations had no reason to only include a handful of levels for the 3D playstyle only so they can work on the Classic playstyle, which they botched. Same thing with Forces here.

Forces has Sonic reaching post-ironic self awareness. 99-06 era was 2cool4school that grew progressively more dated and cringeworthy. Unleashed happens and things lighten up until Sonic is basically prostrating himself in forgiveness for that other shit. Come Lost World and the coolness is now a faux pas, he's not even cheeky like he was in Colors.

Now Sonic has fully embraced the grandiose scale storytelling that was perhaps mismatched with such a franchise during the first 3D era, only with the self awareness brought on by the second. The evolution is actually fascinating.

I never get the point of aimless fluffing up of villains like this, he's just going to crumble when Sonic believes in the super power of friendship and goes gold.

Shadow worked because it was a different time and the approach was done relatively sparingly. Those like Mephiles and Black Doom trying to drum up all this ominous flare always just falls flat on its face.

Thank you. Finally someone said it. Sonic Forces so far isn't Shadow or Black Knight levels of terrible. It just looks like a edgy Sonic Generations which I personally have no problem with. I fucking loved Generations, a lot of people did.

The reason why is because the runner formula takes the longest to make, its the reason why Colors was the shortest out of all the games.

There's this cool theory that demonstrates a way that this character could be handled very well.

In summary, it states that Infinite is a powerful interdimensional being that is capable of viewing but unable to interact with Sonic's past adventures. Infinite feels inpired by them, and desperately wants to become part of his world to the point where he accepts a deal provided by Eggman just to make his dream a reality. Infinite then splits himself into two entities, the first one being the villainous character and the other one being the Avatar, ultimately fulfilling his wish about venturing along Sonic.

As the games goes on, the Avatar begins to ask himself if it was truly worth it to tamper with Sonic's dimension and being dishonest about his true identity just to spend time with his hero. In the end, it is a commentary about how fans selfishly like to establish their OCs as some sort of saint just to relate with the worlds and characters they admire.

This is the game where Sonic meets a bunch of Pixar-esque humans compared to the poor attempts at normalcy in Adventure, Shadow and '06. There's also some cutesy will they won't they shit with Amy. The only thing remotely approaching edge was Eggman losing it at the finale from having his theme park dreams squashed by Sonic again.
