It's not that I hate her especially but she's the easiest to point to and explain why the P4 cast are a bunch of whiny spoiled twats.

Do we ever even see her mom? Do we see anyone else's perspective on the whole inherit the inn thing beyond her's? We see no one force anything on her beyond what amounts to chores and we're expected to think that creates an interesting character? She's a brat. They all are.

I make this comparison a lot but take Michel from 2. We see he has a dream beyond his family's business, we see his father terrifies and abuses him and we see him actually struggle with it. That's a character.

Yukiko has no goals, she has no dreams. She's just a spoiled princess who gets pissy she has to help her family put food on the table and the only sign we see that she's got her future decided for her is some off hand comment made by a faceless newscaster.

This is how ALL the characters in 4 are. A bunch of shitty douche bag teens whining like the world's out to get them when their problems are less than what most of the players experience daily. There's no bullies, no abuse, not suffering. Kanji makes a dungeon because he's scared people are going to call him a faggot? Big fucking whoop. That's not an arc. Nobody wants to be called a faggot. Naoto is throwing a huff because the adults don't want some stupid teenager walking in on their murder mystery, oh shock and horror. Chie doesn't even get a gungeon and Yosuke is quick to forget the girl he likes got killed.

They're not characters. They're boring and it's infuriating watching them spread this toothless shit over 70 hours

Her problem was never the inn itself. It was feeling trapped and like her future was already decided for her. It's the same "struggle against fate" bullshit every Japanese game uses. But unlike other instances of the trope where the characters inexplicably are able to defy or rewrite fate, Yukiko comes to terms with and accepts that there's limits to what she can change.

Yukiko is boring just like the other P4
They're all stupid and emotionally act like weird impossible to empathise with aliens.

They don't seem to care or have any stake in anything at alll, their entire world and lackluster development revolves around the protagonist.

If you were the average Joe in Inaba you might not have noticed a problem at all.

Compare this to Persona 3 , which is no masterpiece but executed where p4 stumbled.

The main cast, while playing into stereotypes also subverts these stereotypes to make a character that isn't as 2 dimensional or more accurately 1 dimensional like P4 cast.

Unlike persona 4 your feet are not kissed as soon as you arrive , and the characters all have their own worlds and hardships to overcome.

The city of P3 also changes over time , degrading as the story progresses with nameless inhabitants expressing a range of emotion.
It's obvious a lot more love and thought went into P3, which is shame because as we see in P4 all you have to so is have static stereotypical characters that tell the player he's doing good and need the player to do anything in their lives

The social links are a huge part of the problem. No one has any consistent character growth or stakes. Everything is cordoned off to the side and even there it's just reiterating the same non problems we don't care about with episodic bullshit. The cast exists only the orbit the MC and it's annoying how no one has any relationships outside of you.

P3 wasn't ideal either but characters like Junpei had plot threads that existed solely for them that weren't resolved faster than this sentence. He had a real relationship with a character we see and get to know.

Im not sure how accurate it is because Im to lazy to check but someone once posted that there's maybe one or two scenes in 4 that the MC isn't present for.

3 had some great character, but something about the IT I can't come to hate. When it came to slice of life stuff, 4 had some comfy scenes where everyone's poking fun at each other, and they really came off as a group of friends. I wouldn't blame social links at all. Persona 3 handled it really well by dedicating parts in the plot for each character's issue and then their resolution. Junpei had this almost inferiority complex in comparison to the MC, found a girl and the other BS. Yukari's isn't as detailed with her parents as her S.link but we hear enough about her situation in the main story, and we get the whole reveal stuff later. The issue is just how P4 handles it. In P3 and P5 we are shown a character's conflict before their dungeon starts. The only person we got that with in P3 was Rise. We're just info dumped about Naoto's trans BS, Kanji's faggotry, and everything else.

Well it's not like we're shown how much of a smuck Junpei is. I mean, the guy made it a point to butt in and talk to people just to stay relevant. The whole thing about him feeling like he was finally someone important when he got his powers and then hating the MC because he overshadowed him was literally them beating you upside the head that this guy was on the low end of the high school popularity poll and just wanted to be "somebody" for once. It makes sense that he'd fall for a cute girl so easily. Their meanings were supposed to span for at least a month or two, so that helps.

P3 has a few good ones manly Aigis, Aki, Yuakri and Junpei and they all has development outside of the MC being there or needing to say anything and it was very noticeable just going up and talking to the charcter or even in battle with some. Aigis's more intertwined with the MC unlike the others, but worked pretty well and her development was shown alot as her voice and lines became more and more human so well done that way.

This. The entire P4's cast act like their lives revolve around the MC and his decisions. You don't see them shooting the shit with eachother when the MC isn't around or acting like they've hung out without you like they do in P3/P5. There's this sense that everything in the game that isn't around the MC freezes until he arrives there. The only time they fixed this was during Marie's S.link in P4G, where you meet other chars hanging out together.

Okay example. Devil Survivor 2. The MC here is effectively essential to solving his parties problems but typically he stumbles into them the implication is that events are happening with him not present. He stumbles into an argument between Airi and Hinako, finds Daichi or Io lost in thought somewhere and offers advice that either helps to see things differently or (and refreshingly) pisses them the hell off.

One of the cooler aspects of the game is that at one point all the characters reach an irreconcilable impasse and it leads to them actually going to war with each other. You can eventually turn them to your team by maxing their fates and power of friendship and blah blah but that's more a reward for actually being a good friend and winning them over via effort convincing them and you cannot avoid the fight and if you don't max them out they're gone. Persona wouldn't do that. You can ignore a social link entirely and they're still gonna be on your knob

But that's exactly why it makes sense. Chidori clearly has problems, so her getting attached to the first boy who shows real interest in her easily makes sense that this lonely chick went that far. Junpei's may be a little out there, but the whole thing about him feeling like the main character and wanting to be that kind of hero just adds onto this. It's only really weird for Junpei's case, not Chidori's.

It's not just Junpei. For instance Yukari is a turbo bitch because she's hurt over losing her dad and is driven to explore the mystery surrounding his demise. Is her story good? Not especially but it's something unique. It's not like Yosuke who forgets about Saki the next dungeon her baggage lasts A LONG TIME.

Characters don't need to be complex but they need to be, well, characters. P4 characters have one or two traits they repeat every conversation and exist only to remind you they're there. It's not Hyperbole to say that if you remove any one of them the changes it would make to the narrative are minimal.

This is why people who don't love Rise as their number one P4 girl hate her instead. You have to deal with her constantly flirting with you after you've already chosen another girl, and it gets annoying fast. It feels even more awkward when she does it right in front of someone you're dating and they don't even react to it. They could have easily added a random response from the person you're dating to make it more bearable. For example, Let's say you're dating Naoto and Rise comes on strong like she usually does; all they have to do is give naoto a "..." line with her grumbling or something as a sound effect and it would at least feel these things actually existed.

I think this is the biggest thing P4 fans who want to shit on other persona games or pretend that the lack of unique things and character development isn't a problem. To which I wholly agree. In every game you're basically waiting for a specific day to hit so the game can plot dump on you before another 20 days of grinding stats and links. A normal RPG doesn't stray from dumps either but because the game moves at your pace it can sprinkle things along better through it's pacing even if it is just town, dungeon, town, dungeon.

Well that's what happens when you take the time to actually develop them. You learn their way of thinking how they react to things what their goals are and what they do. Not to mention when you write your game with the group in mind over the MC you get stronger scenarios or at least ones that actually feel more genuine.

I think Persona 5 was a few steps forward in this regard despite still having a lot of the same hangups. Makoto is hardly an especially complex character but we do see her interact with Sae. We do see her family issues play more into the plot to create flaws that lead to actual problems. Plus the game actually takes time to step away from the heroes perspective to show you what the antagonists are doing to remind you there's bigger shit happening if even the characters aren't complicated.

You're trying to use logic with the waifufag breed of Persona. You can't make nonsensical conversations with them that would compare their waifu or shine them in a lower light. If anything, P4fags are the whole reason why the SMT vs Persona community thing kind of exists. Most arguments from the SMT side have always been about the P4 mentality of not caring about character development so long as they have good waifus, and most of the Persona side of arguments come from P4fags. I mean, when was the last time you saw people comparing P1-3 with SMT or using it for arguments? Because it was out of the blue. Persona 4 had this giant boner for red herrings and plot twists, which is why we get it, what...4 fucking times if we can't Sagiri? Izanami's position in the whole thing doesn't even make sense. Why give her protag the power if she clearly intended to fuck the world with shadows regardless? Yeah P4 had a distinct lack of balls. Killing Nanako may be a bit extreme but the characters generally face very little hardship. There's never a sense of failure or loss. They magic and rainbow their way through the whole game. There's one guy they fail to save and it's a literal who nobody cares about in a dungeon that's bluntly, pure filler.

Plus it makes the villain seem generally nonthreatening. Only two people get killed? P5 doesn't have a HUGE body count either but at least one of the people who does die has a strong connection to the party. And even the death aside it's a sign that the villains out played them and you where put on the defensive immediately after you where starting to feel super badass. P3 is a constant loss train.

The sad part is it's actually really easy to fix this in Persona 4. Instead of just having one teenager kidnapped at a time you fill the town with actual faced NPC who get kidnapped along side your party as the game goes on. Your party is of course limited so you have to focus on you focus on saving the people you personally care about but now every party member has to live with the fact that every time one of them are saved it means someone else wasn't. And as more and more NPCs vanish and die the whole mood of the city gets darker and grayer as the survivors become increasingly distrustful of each other.
