So yesterday oculus went on sale and today amazon is having another sale on top by giving you a $100 gift card. So that means the oculus plus the motion controls for $300.

Kind of tempted, is the VR porn good now? Are there games?
>>
At that price you might as well buy it, play all the free stuff, and resell it if you're not interested.
>>
>>383592147
there are no games that are worth it besides the one where it simulates an old arcade and you can play all your emulated games there
>>
>>383592529
Actually shit you're right. Could probably even profit if I resell.
>>
From a buddy i've heard it was phenomenal. The porn i mean. He tried it at another's home. This guy had a 50$ a month subscription for VR porn.

He described it as flawless, surreal and a complete replacement for your current girlfriend. It's that it's expensive or he would've bought it back then.

I once tried a DK1 and i was completely blown away at home real it seemed. ( pixelated but which such a amazing depth. )
>>
>>383592613
Milk the thing for all the free games and free porn while you have it. Check out /t/ for vr porn threads.

That's the price point it should be at, but there are still no games. It's the same thing I have going with the Switch right now. Good price, but no games. However, the Switch is getting Prime 4 and that's when I'll be buying it, while the Oculus rift has no future. Maybe it shouldn't have been 600 fucking dollars to start with.

>>

Yeah it's not like it being a gift card means they'll get me to shop there more than I already do.
>>
>>383595221
400 minus 100 does equal 300, but if a bundle costs $400, it still costs $400 dollars even if it includes more than one thing inside it.
>>
>>383595185
It's already restocked once. Get prime now and be ready to jump on it the second it goes up again.
>>
>>383595221

>>
>>383594250

>>
What's the deal with VR games. Are there still games that are rift or vive exclusive or can you basically play everything on both?
>>
>>383596656
SteamVR games work by default with the Rift and Oculus games work with the Vive using a compatibility hack someone made called Revive.
>>
>>383596656
You can play all games on an Oculus Rift, but you need to use a special program to make the Vive work in the Oculus store. All the major players are currently partnered with the people developing an open standard that will be the VR equivalent of OpenGL. This will end all the headset exclusivity bullshit.
>>
>>383592147
It's not worth it even for VR porn.
>>
>>383595221
You didn't spend 300, you spent 400$ you silly goy
It's a 100$ discount on a total 500$ expense.
>>
>>383592548

What's it called?
>>
>>383593670
>Discounts mean bad business

Or that they're selling enough games to make up the cost.
>>
>>383592147
The games are pretty fun and I actually haven't tried the porn at all. I'm super worried my roommate will walk in on me and it'll be horrifying because those headphones really block audio well surprisingly and holy fuck I don't want to keep jerking to porn in VR while that shit plays out on my screen.
I'd recommend buying a third sensor, setting up 360 tracking. Makes 360 games play a lot better and is still cheaper than the Vive.
Games I would recommend so far are Robo Recall, Superhot VR, Audioshield, Hotdogs Horse Shoes and Hand Grenades, Bigscreen Beta, GORN, the Serious Sam VR games, and Thumper. I play pretty much every day now. Mostly Audioshield and H3VR because muh guns.
>>
>>383597742
Uh yeah no, that's not how it works. More likely than that, maybe they actually did get the manufacturing costs down, so now they're able to take a smaller hit on hardware units in order to gain market share in software. That's what Microsoft did with Xbox.
>>
very worth it at that price
>>
I would if I didn't have to spend an extra £250 to upgrade my gpu.
>>
>>383597935
Could be. They're making a big deal about Lone Echo but I can't think of any other big projects.

Maybe they're trying to grab the fence sitters before Valve and Bethesda release those big VR titles made with the Vive in mind.
>>
So it's been 4 years since Facebook bought Oculus and 1 since the CV1 came out.

When is Zuckerberg going to do that terrible thing the conspiracy theorists kept ranting about? Looks to me like he kept his hands off this whole time.
>>
How heavy is VR on your CPU anyway

iirc the steam vr testing thing said my pc should be able to get by, but in newer games I definitely feel like my 4440 is throttling the 390

>>383607089
Probably true
Anybody play Subnautica VR? How is it?
>>
>>383606960
Needs 3 cameras, 3 USB 3.0 ports (ideally on separate root hubs), and a mess of extension cables. No thanks.
>>
>>383607204
USB 3.0 isn't required for the sensors as of update 1.4.
>>
>>383607167
unless you have a really big room the oculus isn't really more limited. it's just more difficult to setup

>>383607204
not really i use two cameras just fine. I just got an extension for the other camera to put it in the other corner of my room. I also use all of them on USB 2.0 and it seems fine.
>>
>>383606765
Imagine being someone who paid full price for the Rift + Touch now. Or anyone that bought PSVR.
>>
>>383607065
Even as a rift user I think Vive is going to win out with it's easier tracking method and those upcoming addons. Oculus's only really benefit was the Touch and Vive's knuckle is a juiced up version of that.

>>383607089
From experience, I prefer games that use roomscale to a minimum. Rick & Morty had me wishing I could just teleport to a spot instead of needing to throw youseeks at it, but I guess that's part of the design for a game that mocks VR.

So do they work fine on USB 2.0? I've only got 2 USB 3.0s on my motherboard and don't really want to get a PCI-E USB 3.0 card because then I can't use my wifi card. Was thinking of getting a 3rd sensor too.
>>
>>383607903
How is Knuckles going to be sold/marketed anyway? Will they sell a new Vive package with them instead of the HTC controllers? I can't imagine people would want to spend $800 and then another $100 on top for better controllers, then $200 for wireless, then $100 or something for other addons. That's almost going to be reserved only for rich fags.
>>
>>383608018
Works fine for me. Oculus Home used to throw errors if you weren't hooked up to USB3, back in the early days. But enough people have sent them logs and most USB2 chipsets are supported now, but YMMV.
>>
>>383608018
not him but my 2 sensors and also headset work fine on USB 2.0. don't know if it'd work with 3 sensors though.
>>
>>383608120
I bet knuckles will cost a fortune, they really need to bring the price of the Vive and Rift down to about £400 permanently if they want people to buy it
>>
>>383608286
Eh I don't know Valve's controllers which they manufacture themselves cost much less. I think they could do it at $100. I mean not that it'd make a huge difference if the base headset is still $800. HTC should drop their price just a tiny bit even if they don't match Oculus.
>>
>>383608427
Who cares how much it costs to make, they will sell it for as high as a price as they can, and continue marketing it as a high end premium product so VR will never get the big install base it needs to make making games for it worthwhile

It's still in prototype stages so there may be ways to cut the cost down. They'll probably just sell them as replacements or bundled with the Vive headset in place of the old wands.

I've used Vive games with the Touch and the wand models didn't make any difference. Knuckle should run fine on older games.

I was a bit sceptical of the preset teleports at first but the actually work out. It's like a point-and-click adventure in that sense.

I also like how it worked around the limited motion tracking. All interactive items are in front for your touch controls but because the headset is 360 tracking, you can turn around and target teleports by looking at them and clicking the right stick.

>>
>>383615697
Can work but native support is always better.
>>
>>383615935
Played Alien Isolation on the hidden VR mode back on my DK2 and it was amazing. Heard Dying Light has something like that too.

Sadly support for it and a lot of older games died when Oculus change the SDK, so the headset isn't treated like a second monitor anymore. I don't know if VorpX solves that or just fakes the support like with other games.
>>
It would be nice if the apps for the phones worked on Oculus. No youtube or netflix.
>>
>>383616314
Nah VorpX is still fake support. It seems like support needs to be implemented at a pretty deep/specific level for each game. The reason we've got VR mods is because they used to support VR once or they have available source code like Doom 3 does.
>>
Why do they have to zero in on this motion control bullshit? How is learning to use weird new controllers more immersive than the ones I've been using for decades? If they put the effort into making every game playable on it (by supporting Vulkan/DX/OGL) I'd buy one. All I ever cared about was the increased FOV. Motion controls are cool and I'm sure cool games could be made, but they aren't. No one wants to give up all their favorite games to play weird indie shit with weird controls. They just want to play their favorite games without having to look through a 20-30" window.
>>
>>383615951
The problem is people are convinced that native support has to mean redesigning the game and neuturing it by adding stupid teleport shit and weird ocntrols when all that really needed to be done was to add a second render point and warp the image for the lenses.
>>
>>383616881
>controlling virtual hands with an ecks bocks controller
nah
they should just go all in with glove-like controllers like in my 90's flicks
>>
>>383616314
Wait, why isn't it treated as a second monitor anymore.

The real reason for them to exist at all is actually because of everything Valve has been working on to drive down the price of SteamVR tracking hardware. They have new ASIC sensors, as opposed to Vive CV1s discrete component based little boards for each sensor, costing like 80% less each. There's also new lighthouses which will cost half or less of the original (only one rotor, and no more LED array or optical sensor for syncing).

They'll probably be both sold individually and bundled with some HMD that will also be using the latest standard SteamVR stuff (including the new lighthouses) . Could be another third party partnership like the Vive (eg a Vive CV2 or LGs forthcoming SteamVR HMD), or could be one Valve has manufactured themselves.
>>
>>383617105
But 98% of games don't have virtual hands. That's the fucking point. They're abandoning 98% of PC games that could be in their library and working to convince people to buy VR. Instead you're paying $400-$500 for tech demo games no one wants to play.

I'm not saying stop developing said games, but they should have focused on supporting existing games first to give people an incentive to buy.
>>
>>383615174
>>383614256
Yeah I figured it would be something like that. I don't mind that whole minimalist gameplay stuff VR headsets have going for them, but they tend to be around 2 hours or so which isn't worth the money imo.

>>383616881
>How is learning to use weird new controllers more immersive than the ones I've been using for decades?
To be really fair, the motion controls are easily the most intuitive I've ever used. They're a pretty good stepping stone for more advanced controls. And a decent amount of games out there use them very well.
And you can play a decent amount of games with VorpX, but I agree that games should have VR support without the motion controls. Just M+K if you're really familiar with your room and the keyboard or plain controller. I think developers are looking far too into the control aspect of VR and are missing out on the plain immersion aspect.

This time though at least Wilson's Heart is like a 5 hour game or so depending on how much you do/find.
>>
>>383617123
Ease of use mostly. There were a lot of times I've had to operate the desktop with one eye in my DK2 so the game would use that instead of my monitor. Now the games always load on the headset.
>>
>>383617328
>they should have focused on supporting existing games first
And how would that work exactly?
I assume they tried that first and didn't work out that well right out of the bat because VR sickness and whatnot, so they started pushing the VR-specific shit out of desperation, since I guess it's easier to create a new "platform" so to speak than adapt a years old one to your new gimmick.

Not defending one side or the other by the way, but I think these crazy price drops are a step in the right direction, 200-300 is a price I'd be more than comfortable with paying.
>>
>>383617794
Holy fuck I remember doing that. God that was some messy shit. Almost made me want to stop going to the effort.
>>
>>383616881
It's hard to go back to sitting down with a m+kb and a headset after playing a game where you're standing and using full motion controls for aiming. It just feels off, like you're not really there. Games where you character is supposed to be sitting are different.
>>
>>383616881
Motion controls are actually good in VR. Forget all that wiimote shit where you have to shake your controller or do gestures to execute simple button commands. You simply do the action yourself. Pick up a gun, load it and aim it. Interact with controls by actually pressing buttons, pulling levers and working joysticks. Punch, grab and throw things.

In comparison, 'traditional' controls are like QTE. Completely detached from the action.

Honest here, after being used to VR, when I go back to playing a normal FPS, my eyes strain. It feels like I just want to look and aim normally but I can't and the mouse just moves the image so unnaturally.

All it is is 3D rendering, which is relatively easy and most games already support, and an image distortion that the lenses undo. Motion sickness is a meme. Games already make many people motion sick; it's something you get used to playing games. The only audience for this is the gamer audience; normies barely play video games, and attempts to sell games to them have failed repeatedly. None of them are buying an HMD. The audience that would buy this already resistant to motion sickness and willing to get used to it.
>>
>>383619957
I remember the first proofs of concept/tests being precisely what you propose, and they dropped them right away instead of expanding on them. I never tried one, but playing a "regular" first/third person game and moving the camera around with my own head while the character is looking straight ahead or is right in front seems like a bad idea, VR/motion sickness or not.
>>
would love to play euro truck simulator 2 on this, but i recently upgraded my graphics card and for some reason i get like 10fps max on that game. which is absurd because i can play the recent hitman game at a solid 60fps in crowded areas. fucking hell
>>
>>383619128
It's a terrible Cyberpunk adventure game and I'm saying that as someone who loves Cyberpunk. The visuals are cool sometimes, the music is great, but the gameplay itself is trash and the entire game feels like a bad FMV come to "life"
Cyberpunk 2077 better have fucking VR support.
>>
To anyone who cares, the games I've played that are really fun on Rift are Thumper, DiRT Rally and Robo Recall.
I hear Superhot VR is a lot of fun too.
>>
>>383621465
dirt rally on rift sounds like a fucking nightmare knowing my driving. i've got a logitech g27 so i want to play driving games in vr
>>
>>383621345
Yeah. I think we should be very clear here. Technolust is not a great game. It's a good set piece experience type of thing, but it's not great as a game.

I wish there was more cyberpunk stuff. I really want CDPR to support VR but I'm not sure they will want to.

Another thing I tried before is DX:MD with 3D in Virtual Desktop, but the performance was so bad and the resolution looked terrible so I gave up on that. Fuck I'd love a Deus Ex game in VR, that would be like the best game ever, no kidding.
>>
>>383621673
It's very nice, especially if you like drifting.
>>
>>383621465
Don't forget Echo Arena. Actually I'm having more fun in that than I did in any of those other games. The team play is unexpectedly glorious, given you get matched with good players.

Plus it's fucking free. Thanks to Intel apparently, they're funding it for us. I wonder what's in it for them though.
>>
>>383621952
i'm really fucking bad at drifting in dirt rally

more people buying better processors to accommodate vr

Are AMD's processors not good for VR or something? I mean I use Intel since I got a good deal on a prebuilt, so I don't know what's happening with AMD right now.

>>
>>383624198

>>
>>383624137
It's interesting how perception of the Rift being worse is actually widespread enough for the Vive to be outselling the Rift, enough for HTC to decide to keep being jews and never drop the price. Even they're Prime day sale is like only $100 off which is a rip off.
>>
>>383605403

>>383624198
PSVR suffers a lot of tracking issues because it works on visible light instead of infra-red.

Until it can play most of my current games, I'd rather just buy a better monitor/GPU.

The only things that actually matter is that the Rift is more complicated to setup, and it doesn't support very big room size tracking (for most people this disadvantage doesn't apply). It also doesn't have support for some of the peripherals the Vive is going to get but those things cost a lot of money on top of the initial buy in.
>>
>>383624362
Actually now that I look, the headset + camera is also at $400 today. Might jump on it.
>>383624485
Does that result in stuff like odd quirks when trying to use in place of a vive/rift on PC?
>>
>>383625029
>like five games
>have to pay money for it
Oculus/HTC should have made it easy to do this.
>>
>>383625423
If you don't have the right lighting, it can drift off center over time.
>>
>>383625423
Don't know about how you're going to use it with PC but the PSVR tracking doesn't support 360 or room scale so it's going to be hard playing a few games. Also because the PS Move controllers don't have an analog stick so it'll be hard to play anything where you move around using a stick.
>>
>>383625423
Don't forget, it'll include some games. I'm on the edge of getting it.
