New job that changed my life style radically, and now I need to get a laptop to get my gaming in (depressing I know, also I don't like consoles so theres that). Only ways for me to access the net currently is my phone and a surface that can't even keep up with my type speed.

I kind of want something good enough to play overwatch, but realistically I won't be gaming a whole lot with it. Just browsing here and there, d&d streaming on the weekends, overwatch and similar gaming outside of that.

Need to see if I can get a good deal on a used one.

No reason to upgrade from a r9 280 (equivalent to an overclocked 7950). I'm a FPS guy and the only new FPS even worth trying in recent years is Quake Champions. Looks like that will run well on any card once it's optimized (already runs competitive-ready 90% of the time for me).

It's called WQHD and a GTX 1060 should have no trouble with it
It's not worth upgrading to from FHD though. 4K is the future and if you can't afford a 4K monitor you shouldn't be buying a monitor at all.
>>
>tfw 970
>Wanted to upgrade to 1440p 100+ Hz this year

It's still doing great with FHD at 60 FPS.

I beat DOOM with everything on High, but as I discovered later, it could run Ultra just fine at 60+ FPS. Pretty pissed with myself for not fiddling with settings properly.

Now playing Tomb Raider and it can't handle Very High textures because of >3.5 Gb, but everything else is maxed.

and I'm all about framerate. I consider anything under 90 fps to be "unplayable". If I'm not running into any trouble then the only way anyone else can is people are activating stupid blur features, placebo shadow settings or they're dumb enough to buy high-res monitors instead of high refresh rate.

>>383412181
>max settings meme

Just what I'm talking about. Dude, max settings are unoptimized garbage and have been since the mid 2000s at least. Look at some comparisons between medium settings and maxed out games. There is usually NO difference at first glance. While you are playing you wouldn't notice, but you will notice that you cut your framerate in half. You need to learn how to tweak a game's settings for gameplay purposes.

>>383412416
Okay, my mistake. So you spend your own money on expensive hardware to take screenshots and benchmarks of games instead of playing them. Got it.

Actually the SENSIBLE way to buy hardware nowadays is to go tick tock in roughly 3-4 year steps. On each tick you buy a new everything. On each tock you only replace the GPU since CPUs are stagnating since 2010.

Is the GTX 1050 considered mid-tier?

A friend of mine says he has 8GB of RAM and an i5 (didn't specify which), but is just using integrated graphics. He says he's cool with just running 7th gen games at 1080p60. I told him that getting a 1050 for $110 should serve his needs, but is that actually good advice?

Managed to get my hands on a workstation they were scrapping at my job, threw in as much ram as I could scavenge from other dead PCs and then threw in a 1050ti. Couldn't put anything more powerful in as the HP tower had a proprietary PSU and motherboard but the package certainly gets the job done. All in all I spent maybe 400 maplebucks in total and I'm struggling to find a game I cant play on at least high settings at 1080p

Well back then good cards were overpriced as fuck, the gap between low end and mid end was high.

The GTX 750Ti came for $90-110 also worked only with the motherboard PCIe slot, was a solid card.
>>
>>383413729
GPU generations last 18 months on average.
You have to skip at least one if you aren't into wasting money.
Either buy midrange and buy ever 2 generations or buy upper midrange and buy every 3 generations.

Never buy high end because those cards depreciate like crazy and don't actually last noticeably longer.

I mean I can emulate pretty much everything up to 6th gen. And I have PS3 and 3DS.

390X with a 6700k.

Doing pretty well here. Though I need to fix the air flow in my PC. The summer heat has proven tough on my HDDs going as high as 50 degrees. (I honestly blame the liquid cooler I put in there. Must spread heat throughout the case more often than a fan cooler. HDDs are sitting under it)

what good is price/performance ratio if it's already obsolete the day you buy it?

It didn't even have such a good price/performance ratio. Spending a bit more on a 270x actually got you more bang for the buck AND better performance at the same time.

>>
>>383414195
You can just calculate fps per [your currency here] using benchmarks of games that seem relevant. For me that would be Crysis 3, I guess. Haven't looked into benchmarks for GPUs in years. It's not so much that high end cards lose value, it's that they never have value to begin with. They are simply overpriced because a small market of "enthusiast" cucks keep buying them any way. 200-300 euros is the sweet spot imo.
>>
>>383415036

Well, my friend says he's not too interested in current 8th gen games. He's completely fine with running 7th gen and below at 1080p.

Me personally, I'm running a potato by 2009 standards (4GB RAM, Core 2 Duo, Radeon 3450 which is barely above 2009 intergrated graphics). I'm looking to build something around the exceptional tier on logical increments ($1600 budget). Should I go for that, or is that overkill? I'm interested in running modern 8th gen shit at 1440p, and emulation.

I was almost gonna buy a 980 when the new Catalyst DX12 drivers dropped and I was suddenly two generations ahead again in newer titles. The only game I can't get to run on reasonable settings and framerate is the new Dudesex, and only in benchmark.

eh, wouldn't call it futureproofing is what I'm trying to do.
I understand I'll have to change out eventually. I just want to ride a comfy wave. Especially with how prices are these days.

I guess just from my experience with the 580, it seems doable. Like, if I didn't feel like trying some VR on my own machines then I have no reason to even upgrade for my purposes.

for video games a 1080 is high end. Its a 500 card...

If youre a design work or simulations yeah a 1080 is mid tier but this is /v/ i thought.

anything above 4+ gb's of VRAM is higher end since its not really needed for most games.
2-4GB is mid range

Not really, 4GHz Ryzen>3,9Ghz Kaby Lake, which are most of the locked ones, and the i5 only has 4 threads, already being fucked in most modern games.

For emulation, Ryzen is more than enough in that it runs PCSX2, Dolphin and CEMU just fine. I mean fuck, my old i5 750@3,5Ghz did aswell. The "emulation" meme only applies until you cap the framerate of the emulator, which even an overclocked Phenom x2 managed, albeit with a bit of shuttering in some specific games.

And no, the PS3 emulator utilizes 8 threads for game logic plus more for audio and OS, i5 is out of the game there aswell.

on pc i usually play more indie shit and the occasional tf2 but my notebook ain't that great nowadays, it heats way too much and the fps drops in games like USF4 on the lowest setting.

My current specs are:

4gb of ram
geforce 720M

I was looking into something a little better than this.

If your current PC isn't falling apart or you've been dying to play a game from years ago that your old PC couldn't or whatever, I would wait for Ryzen's more mature successor. ETH has been steadily declining for the past month and it is mostly responsible for the surge of GPU buying. With the "rise of altcoin mining" and general awareness about cryptocurrency that this latest surge has created though, I'm not sure the market will ever quite "normalize" compared to what it was like at the end of last year. It may take an entire generation of graphics cards for supply to catch up with the new demand for them.

I mean, you could pick up 8 GB RX 480s for about $200 on sale before Christmas last year and the RX 580 (same card basically) are commanding almost double that when they're in stock. It's insane.

If ETH and other shitcoins keep crashing the market will be flooded with cheap, well-worn cards for a long fucking time.

A month and a half ago you definitely could. Now you probably can but you have to really look around for good GPU prices.
A 1060 6GB was once $230, now it's $300. Wait a little while longer and you should see prices go down.

>>383430839
Right now is an awful time because of the etherum mining fad that has driven up many mid range GPU prices. But if you want something that is about 30-40% faster than a PS4 (considering GPU and especially CPU) than get something close to this:

>i3-6100
>8GB RAM (doesn't matter what speed, just DDR4 and 2x4GB)
>1050 Ti 4GB

If GPU prices weren't jacked right now you could swap the 1050 Ti with an RX 470 4GB and you'd be getting double the GPU power for only a little more money and you'd be able to max out everything at 1080p for life basically with a 470.

Okay, so in about 3 years we will have monitors like this at reasonable prices. Good to know. Inb4 "poor", nobody likes a braggard. If you earn so much money these prices don't put you off buying this thing then that's good for you but maybe you ought to reevaluate your priorities. There are other things you could buy with that money, or you could simply try to keep/increase it for future emergencies. Buying a 2000 dollar monitor counts as a waste unless you're a literal billionaire.

>>
>>383431114
That's a weak reason to "never buy AMD again." There are a million things that could cause instability. I'm glad you fixed it but that just doesn't seem like a huge deal if all it took was a little tweaking in afterburner. If heat wasn't an issue you probably could have solved it by giving it a bump in core voltage too.
>>
>>383431848
Yes, some people have different priorities than you do and have more money or allocate it differently. Instead of being a sperg you could realize you're simply not the target demographic.
>>
>>383431530
In games like GTAV and Cities Skylines you will dip into the 40's at worst scenes but still get 60fps most of the time, still much better than PS4.
>>
>>383432191
Furthermore, AMD only supplies the GPU and chipset. It's up the the AIB partners to add the rest. Some of them try to get away with less to save a buck.
>>
>>383432191
>>383431983

Not a heat problem. I've troubleshoot the problem and the only thing that worked was to underclock the damn thing, fans are fine, monitor temp is normal range etc. If you google something along the lines "amd rx4x0 crashes every game" you can see how widespread and unaddressed the issue is. kind of rediculous
>>
>>383432605
Very good point. For example, the ASUS AMD cards from last generation (I believe it was the 390 and 390x cards or maybe it was as far back as 290x/290) were really horrible because they just recycled the same exact heatsink/fan design they had used on 970s and 980s and they were completely insufficient for those AMD GPUs. Not AMD's fault ASUS decided to be cheap fucks.
