The question is: are those 600 hours worth?

You're still young, get a real degree and then later a real job. Video games can be a hobby as well.
You don't need to shill because you lack of talent, you just had bad decisions in life, at least make a good one and stop being a moron.

I bet nobody will even take the 30 minutes needed to crack the game and release a pirated version.

If you don't mind wireframe graphics then the first one is a good place as any to start. It's not particularly complex and is easy to get into, as long as you don't mind drawing maps yourself. Wiz6-7-8 are all good places to start with as well.

Don't start with Wiz4. It's literally one of the hardest games ever made. You can beat it with persistence, but it's closer to playing Shin Megami Tensei than an actual Wizardry game. It's a fun game to try after you're more familiar with Wiz1-2-3.

Wizardry 5 is pretty boring. It's not bad, but it doesn't offer anything new or interesting that Wiz1-3 didn't already do. The reason it's not discussed is because it's middling game. It's right before Wiz6 which is where the series takes its first real evolutionary leap since the first game. I think most people just skip it.

Am I the only one, who thinks that Cybermage was the best Bradley's game? I mean, it's definitely the most awesome one level-layout-wise, of all of his creations, and, well, it's definitely the most polished game he has ever created, with the least amount of retarded bullshit. And it's, like, one of the best 90's FPS games I have ever played - and I've played almost all of the notable ones (including Pathways into Darkness, PC and SAT Powerslave/Exhumed and Alien Breed 3D II - and not mentioning the obvious ones).

You know, I think that Bradley is a really good level-designer (although his favorite shtick is splicing several small maps with different expected gameplay process into one big flowing level) and a curious writer with his own style. But man, when he tries to mess with gameplay mechanics, it's, like, Ice-Pick Lodge level shit, the guy is just completely oblivious as to how it would play out IRL and not in his fantasies.
>>
>>383130716
I approach Wiz4 like a roguelike. It's pretty unrealistic to assume you'll beat the game in your first try. Just try to get further each time and as you map the dungeon levels it becomes easier and easier. If you try to beat it in one try then yeah, it's going to be pretty infuriating.
>>
>>383130915

>>383130104
No. It is that bad. It is exactly that bad. I don't think there has ever been a harder game that has gotten a commercial release.

The very first room

The minefield level

The fucking spinner level

The doublefucked level where half the fucking walls are one-way

The fucking COSMIC CUBE

The only way you could think Wiz 4 is "not that bad" is if you used a walkthrough the whole way through, and even then the game will find ways to screw you over.
>>
>>383130889
It looks average at best, not worthy of a 40 bucks. It will probably get Mixed reviews and go on sale in less than 3 months.
>>
>>383130915
Would you recommend it to someone who thinks Quake's and System Shock's level designs are the pinnacles of the genre?
>>
>>383130889
It's not a pixel/indie retro game. It's literally a game that was developed 23+ years ago to the norms/standards of its contemporaries (Wizardry ~7).
Instead of releasing it then he's been revising and adding to it as a gentlemen hobbyist/madman ever since. It's not a modern game in a retro style, it's a vapourware game from the era that was never released (until now.)
>>
This game will never go on sale, as Cleve's livelyhood doesn't depend on it. Cleve already made his fortune as an independent, contracted programmer, which also afforded him the ability to develop Grimoire in the first place.
>>
>>383131554
yeah its funny the game has been around so long the style and genre has gone out of fashion and become come back as retro
A full 360
>>
>>383131335
Didn't use a walkthrough. I just worked on Wiz4 over a long period of time, slowly chipping away at it until I beat the game. As I said before, knowing the maps is 80% of the battle in Wizardy. After that it becomes quite easy.

>>383124715

>>383131675
The genre never went out of style in Japan, at least. And I'd say that the genre is still out of fashion here in the west. Only real time dungeon crawlers came back, but turn based ones never really did. Then again the few RT blobbers that did get made have shit productions (Sword and Sorcery Underworld) or are just shit games with shit productions (Frayed Knights).
>>
stop talking about grimoire outside the codex you fucking idiot
>>
>>383131554
So, why now?
Why not 20 years ago?
The game does not try to look old, it apparently IS that old.
Why would you want that? I understand buying old games you played as a kid, but buying a 23 year old game you have zero relations with?
This is absolutely mental.

>>
>>383124715
If they worked on it for 23 years why does it still look like shit?
>>
>>383131883
Yeah, like I said, despite my goof up. Real Time blobbers like Grimrock did a comeback. Turn Based ones, not so much. But even Grimrock didn't stick around for long. The 2nd one sold poorly. The game was only a meme and that was because it was an indie game that didn't look like a newgrounds flash game. Game sold entirely on its visuals.

It's definitely on par (of Quake I adore Romero's and Peterson's levels and SystemShock1 is good although too "loopy" for my taste, and with some amount of absolute shit maps - "Level 3", for example, "Reactor" and "Level 7" to the lesser extent). I advise you to play hard difficulty only, keyboard only. Keyboard layout is going to be a bit of an issue. I used cursor keys for forward-backward-turns, but some keys in WASD are unassignable, so, for the left hand you'll need to use a position like FXCV or something (like, X and V for strafes, F for jumps, C for crouches, D and G for look down|up that sort of thing). Anyway, the point is finding a suitable "shifted WASD" for the left hand, after you do it, it's a breeze.
Also, the tutorial level is utter bullshit, I advise you to jump right into the game, and to endure through the first level (it's okay, but what comes next is much better).

Also, Powerslave PC is quite good (the European version named Exhumed is slightly patched, compared to USA one, Powerslave) level-design-wise, very intricate, very big levels (although the progression for the most part is quite linear), although the shooting mechanics is very meh. I do recommend checking it out as well, although Cybermage is DEFINITELY a better game both overall and level-design-wise.

This was made by one person as well.
It's probably also more fun.
And it's not 40$ either.

You know, elitists can ogle at their spreadsheet simulators all they want but at the end of the day - if the gameplay doesn't feel fluid and right - it's all unnecessary bloat.

And considering that a lot of advancements in the dungeon crawler genre were made for a certain reason (e.g. technological advancement - the entire grid movement thing is nothing but a limitation of earlier hardware/memory) there's no real reason for these "oldskool" features to exist other than nostalgia.

But nostalgia doesn't carry over to any audience that hasn't experienced the original games.

Especially not at 40$.

This is literally "Stuck in the past: The Game"

The difference here is that Grimoire is made by one person who is a programmer. Ghost of a Tail is made by an artist/animator who used to work for Disney, and he used contractors to work on the game code while he worked the visuals as well as some programming. And no, Ghost of a Tail wasn't that fun, which is why he scrapped the whole game and started over.

It always saddens me to see meek little anonymous homo sapiens trying to deny the sheer greatness of the race-uplifting achievement that is Grimoire, a single act of Creation to let the wise Neanderthal reclaim the world in a pandemonium of incline so sublime your consciousness is going to melt under the meteor-like impact of that release. Yes, it took quite some time to develop, just like the planet Earth took some time to develop, only to get ridiculed by reptilians and assorted rabble. Let me tell you this, shitsticks - game's over. Over and out. You won't believe how much blood does an ordinary anus hold after the Neanderthal lance takes a short break from ravaging it mercilessly. You've many times called Grimoire some stupid vapourware from the Bush era, well guess what, George W. ain't here no more but Grimoire sure is. You call Cleve a madman, this Harbinger of Incline you dare mock on daily basis, but your vulture-like crowing does not penetrate the heavenly air of gentlemanly entertainment, not one bit. Cleve will trample you all like the cosmos-dwelling turtle aeons old He is, and His name shall reverb all over the known galaxy and many neighbouring ones for all reptilians to recognise His greatness.

Listen to me, you anonymous punks. I don't know what puny homo sapiens gods you pray to but believe me this - no prayers shall spare you from the righteous wrath of the Demiurge of Gaming, don't count on it kids. I expect you melonhead hordes to scoff and shake your heads in disbelief but that's ok, that's to be expected, so I expected it, just as I expect the worldwide wave of crucifixions as true fans of video games who've pre-ordered Grimoire and thus attained knowledge unknown to this sinful world drag you out of your basements and without mercy and with impunity unheard of before massacre whatever remains of you they shall find in your hovels after the act of Cleve's releasing Grimoire itself makes your blood vessels burst violently to your parents chag

Lionell coded most of the stuff himself though.
I know that he wrote the entire playercontroller himself and that he has a good grasp of HLSL (shader language used by unity).
It's true that he was originally an artist. But he's a legit programmer these days as well.

> And no, Ghost of a Tail wasn't that fun, which is why he scrapped the whole game and started over.

Which was way before the EA release.
And it still didn't take him 20 years.

But either way, if that example isn't sufficient take other games. Dust: An Elysian Tale was done by one guy.
Hell, considering the artistic level we are talking about here, you could even take Stardew Valley as a comparison.

These are all well designed games and despite the fact that some of them have a nostalgia aspect, they all took reasonable changes to their respective genres into account. Without any sense of the snobish elitism Cleve is showing, they acknowledge that other designers have thought about problems before and came up with good solutions.

The lack of understanding for the technological and (hand-in-hand) design-wise advancement would absolutely break Grimoire's neck if it wasn't for Cleve's eccentric personality giving the game free PR.

It was if you really think about it.
The concept of blobbers was already advancing away from grid based movement in 1994.

Dungeon Crawling had changed already
Ultima Underworld was when now? 1992?
Arena just released.
Daggerfall only came relatively shortly after.
Might and Magic 5 was the last with grid movement as well (till legacy which tried to cash in on nostalgia and was punished for it).

And then you had experimental dungeon crawling concepts like System Shock, which was a well crafted, handmade experience that really pushed the boundaries of what could be done (which is the reason why it's still copied).

So what lessons did Cleve take away from all of this?
That those advancements are all shit and the stuff he played in his youth is absolutely superior?

I'm not saying that design hasn't become stagnant with the years, but thinking that nothing could improve beyond cryptic, clunky features from the 80s is almost laughable.

And it wasn't even the first game to combine dungeon crawling way of level-designing with first-person shooting. Before it were, at the very least, Catacomb 3D (although it could be completed in hour or two) and Pathways into Darkness (which is LEAGUES ahead of System Shock in terms of shooting mechanics). And after SS, there were Cybermage and HeXen 1, which, again, wiped the floor with SS1 when it came to blasting dudes to the face.

I'd argue that System Shock is remembered much more as a "game that is a gesture at the same time", much like, say, Shadow of the Colossus. Not because it was oh so innovative a game.

It certainly pushed approachable gameplay complexity in the action genre.

Depends on the point of view.

Also different game modes like the cyber space element were pretty rare back in the day.

I dunno, in superdemo, the "King's Quest" part, where you are trying to apply MacGuffins to these or those suspicious places, running around, backtracking, so on, is pretty good. The MacGuffins themselves look interesting, they do interesting things, the puzzle aspect is, in general, pretty good, it's easy to get hooked on it. The battle mechanics in superdemo were really broken though, and, well, the leveling system can obviously be exploited to no end through skill farming.

As I said earlier, Pathways into Darkness wipes the floor with System Shock 1, as a shooter game. So do HeXen and Cybermage (both of which were already being developed by the time floppy version of System Shock was released).

Honestly my only issue is the visuals. I'm not against 2D or pixel, don't get me wrong, but the artist here had no sense of style. You can make your art in any way you like, but it needs a style that holds up. The style here doesn't even look retro, it just looks bad. It even looks bad compared to its contemporaries of its time. Take Wizardry 7, which had beautiful 2D pixel art compared to this flat lifeless blur of visuals.

2D pixel art has come far enough that this should have been touched up at some point.

That is only appropriate for games made by companies who already have a lot of capital and a wide audience, it's not okay to expect small time and niche developers to be able to afford to offer the same kind of discounts for the games they make, they are put at a huge disadvantage.

So Grimrock did pretty well for an indie game, I think mostly because of its presentation and puzzles, and these Grimoire threads are filled with nostalgia for classic DRPGs...

The only way a player may grow stronger is to fight their way through the current level, and find a pentagram on the next level, no matter how overwhelmingly difficult the foes on the current level may be. Some of these foes include ninjas capable of killing Werdna instantly with a critical hit, mages with area-effect spells that can wipe out entire parties of monsters, thieves who can steal items that are critical to completing the game, and clerics capable of resurrecting Werdna's fallen adversaries."

Five is almost impossible unless you savescum. I had it on SNES and reset the game every time my party died. The game only autosaves when you get to the main castle screen. So if your party's dead on floor six, you have to make a new party that somehow manages to get down there, find their corpses, and bring them back to town. At that point, you've basically made a new party just as strong as the old one that died.

Wow. Just ... wow. I am wondering for the first time in my life if I really should commit myself having seen all of my own game. A sane man could not have done this.

all M&Ms have time pass when you train/level up
in M&M7 its retarded and time passes every time they level up individually but you only start taking penalties at age 80 or so

all of these kinds of games are sci-fi games

There is also evidence of Neanderthals being captured by Homo Sapiens and murdered in mass as well as used essentially as sex slaves.
Hell we may have even trained dogs to hunt and kill them.

Fuck. That's a mechanic I simply can't deal with. It's just retarded shit no matter how you look at it. Could be interesting if the world aged with you, but nothing makes the player feel like they exist in a vacuum like having them age this way.

>While some modern human nuclear DNA has been linked to the extinct Neanderthals, no mitochondrial DNA of Neanderthal origin has been detected, which in primates is always maternally transmitted. This observation has prompted the hypothesis that whereas female humans interbreeding with male Neanderthals were able to generate fertile offspring, the progeny of female Neanderthals who mated with male humans were either rare, absent or sterile.
The good ol' "take our women and become extinct" - tactic. Is this what Europeans are doing right now?
