To pick up items, interact with people, open chests etc hold LMB and press W

Same with combat, hold LMB and then WSAD become attack buttons

The way you swing your weapon is supposed to be clunky at the beginning because you aren't trained, as you train your attacks are faster and more fluid and you gain new moves.

Don't pick fights with humans at the beginning.

Just stick to main roads at the beginning.

Also Gothic 2 is much better than 1. 1 is really empty compared to the amount of shit there is in 2, but it's still a very good game

No problem, hope you get it to work it's an amazing experience however as with all three of Troika's games it's a buggy mess so I would advise getting some patches including the one that removes the level cap since if you're exploring and doing side quests then you'll hit the cap a little over half way through the main story. Also combat heavily favors magic and melee so if you want to play as a technologist I would advise doing the infinite money glitch early on in Shrouded Hills because you'll need to be buying lots of ammo and supplies.

People think it's awesome that you are forced to put all spec points into one stat if you want to beat the game. I say go magic and just learn the spell that does the most damage so you can one shot orcs in chapter 4. Seriously fuck that chapter. If you go bow and sword you can't even get passed 2 orcs.

To melee, learn to A-D-A-D-A-D and step back. Parrying is most of the time inferior to straight-up dodging because it only works on human opponents, and even that is clunky.

It was pretty popular in its day. Not as much in the states but in Europe it and Morrowind were basically the two big open world RPGs that everyone talked about.

Its localizations made it popular in quite a few corners of the world and because it was quite impressive at the time. It actually has NPCs with actual schedules of life and a lot of tiny little shit like crafting your own swords and stuff that all adds up to the notion of great atmosphere.

I wouldn't say it's the "greatest RPG ever", but it does do a lot of things well. It does have positively rewarding exploration, an impeccable feeling of being on a "zero to hero" quest (it feels good when you confront your Chapter 1 bullies and fuck them up, and you will feel attached to the bros you make along the way).

Also Potatoland loves it because it was given a translation that wasn't shit. Look at the dedication of the Polish fandom:

I play a fuckton of RPGs, anon, from the late 80s to the newer ones, and on multiple platforms, and Gothic 2 is a really good RPG. I still wouldn't say it's my definite #1, and it certainly doesn't scratch all the itches that I would expect from an RPG. Then again, there's a fuckton of schools of thought on what is a good RPG; Planescape: Torment fags would disagree with you and so would the people who only grokk hardcore dungeon crawlers.

I think Gothic 2 is definitely a god tier exploration-focused RPG. It is a very good game for anyone who enjoyed Morrowind's design and is willing to sacrifice the customization and vastness of the world for a more compact experience that is more fleshed out in its good parts. The old cliche of "quality over quantity" comes to mind. Some of the quest design in the Gothic games is brilliant and quite unrivaled.
