And yet, here we sit, digesting the fact that Cloud Imperium Games, creators of Star Citizen, has had to apply for additional funding from UK bank Coutts & Co.

Not only that, but they’ve had to offer up everything they own as collateral."

In order to be competitive in the software world in terms of attracting talent you need those sorts of things in an office. The fact that you think having a coffee maker or company recreational activities is bad or abnormal in any way indicates to me that you're some fat Americunt who has never actually worked at a major firm. This is not to excuse them blowing through $150 mln. I believe that because of the amount of money they acquired they changed the development form from sort of a loose activity in a basement to a more corporate style development

When I visit other offices in my company, many of them have these fancy coffee and espresso machines. They let you spend a lot of time to make a really good cup of coffee or two.

By contrast, my office has a simple carafe and grinder, that fills a decent sized pot or two in a single run and can keep the pots warm for a whole day.

The latter cost us orders of magnitude less than the other machines.

Coffee culture is strangely overinflated, like beer culture in startup towns.

How people even rationalize something like that? Who doesn't look at a scheme like they had and think, yea, uh, $2000 for a digital item is probably not worth it, for a game I've never played, that I've barely seen any actual footage of.

But anyways, guys I'm making a game where you can be any size alien you want and the starter packages are $899 if you want to be a queen alien and you can control other aliens and it's a fps but also a mmo, so you can upgrade your aliens and there are vehicles and worlds to explore and also crafting fishing and football.

And even with that, by design, biassed description, it sounded like a bad idea. I mean a really bad idea. I mean even the simple 'feature' that if a ship was destroyed, a ship you paid real money for, it was gone forever, why the FUCK would I ever want to play that? I can tell you are not rich nor have you spent any time around rich people. This is what poor/middle class people think the mentality of rich people is. Hint: it isn't. Yes they will buy a $125k car even though a $50k car will suffice, but the reasons and rational for doing so is not the same as being flippant with money. $5000.00 to someone making $3 mil+ a year is, by them, viewed as the same $5000.00 by someone who makes $50,000 a year. The sooner middle class people realize this the better.

Actually it would be more like someone buying a 50k classic car, getting it stolen by another collector, and not having insurance/the ability to call the police to get it back/get compensation because you signed an agreement when you purchased it that this type of situation could take place.

This 'feature' is what turned me off the most when I had this game explained to me.

>>381794854

The point still stands, 'filthy' rich people do not think or behave the way you think they do or 'you' would in that situation. They are not flippant with their money. That's how they get so rich. Even buying excess homes, cars, boats ect are an *investment* not just spending for the sake of spending.

>>381794837

Even then they'd still be able to sell their car
>>
>>381794968

There is, but that's a STUPID way to go about it. For one, it's antithetical to gameplay. In so creating a situation where a ship destroyed is gone for good, you are, in effect, punishing players for playing. You are adding a *risk* to gameplay. For better or ill, Call of Duty is one of the most played games ever. Why? Because there is no risk, perceived or real, in so doing. In reality it actually rewards risk.

Imagine how people would play COD if every time you died, all the perks and weapons carried were lost forever and you had to either rebuy, reearn, or steal new ones? They would be a trainwreck.

"Insurance" is maybe the *worst* way to handle this problem, as it more or less acknowledges it *is* a problem and instead of recognizing that, they try to 'mitigate' the risk.

The guys that thought that up were *bad* engineers, because you don't design a system that's more dangerous to use than to sit still in.
>>
>>381795282
Yeah but marketing always inflates shit ridiculously high. Actual game dev couldn't have been more.
>>
>>381795429
>single player missions?
literally everyone who backed it originally, since that was the main selling point way back in the day.
>>
>>381795464
>the assblast would be fucking amazing

Yeah, no it wouldn't. For a very simple reason: the game would die ABNORMALLY fast. So yeah you get to do that, maybe once or twice, then people stop playing or doing ANYTHING risky. Game stagnates. Game dies.
>>
>>381789579

About 3/4 of that price was marketing as others have said. If you break down costs of most modern AAA games, the dev costs are fractional. Administration and marketing make up the bulk majority share of expenses.
>>
>>381795187

You have no fucking clue what you're talking about, I work at one of the most expensive bars in Western Europe and I've seen people spend over 50k on drinks in an evening.

Or if by filthy rich you mean old money and only people a billion or over, you might be right but still it's 50/50 - plenty of oil princes, CEO's and the like that spend plenty of money on experience.
>>
>>381795554
Nah, you're retarded. The entire point of these games is that there is a risk inherent with everything you do. If you don't like it, don't play. Trying to change the genre to fit fucking cod of all things would enrage basically everyone.

You're implying that everyone is flying around in a 12k ship, which would only be a select few. The backers would stop playing from derriere-damage, maybe, the rest would be normal. EVE is a fine example.
>>
>>381795609

The main selling point I saw back then was a space exploration mmo with a player-driven economy.

That single player bullshit was supposed to be an afterthought.
>>
>>381795823
What bar?
>>
>>381795808

cont'

A further thought worth mentioning:

Software/CS Engineer's salaries haven't increased by much *raw* dollars (as in + how many dollars) over the last two decades, while executives have increased by millions. That's the source of inflated dev costs. A code monkey in 2001 was making ~$45,000, and now somewhere in the $55k to $65k for middle experience guys. Exes were making in 2001 ~$10 to $12 million a year. Now they make in excess (especially for big AAA's) of $20-$22 million.
>>
>>381795554

EVE works fine, also if there's no risk there's no adrenaline for there is no sense of danger present. Like I said, not everyone is going to spend money on ships.

I call it the SUX $25,000 Fraudster. It's got a size 87 Handcannon on it. It's got 2 Super Large engines. It's got a science antenna(Science Features™ not currently in game). It can hold a massive 14,325 grams of cargo and has space for a pilot plus dog.

I'm thinking a starting price of $225, but I can let you pay more for upgrades.

That is true.

I'm not disagreeing here but you're oversimplifying things if you state that old money never spends and only invests. The whole notion of rich as fuck people wearing worn down clothes and eating cheese sandwiches is anywhere near correct. Maybe a few, maybe even almost half of them in some places but it differs enormously by country and heritage.

Do we know how much this loan was? Is there interest? Depending on those numbers, that wouldn't save you any money. I can agree that you could potentially save money if you had a low interest, short-term loan with few payments. I think it's premature to say they are saving money.

I just can't see the sole purpose of this as "saving money".

Let's say the pound and dollar have a 1:1 ratio right now, and you need to pay £100. That will cost you $100.

Now, let's say you take out a loan with 20% interest. That means you'll have to pay £120. But you pay it off when the pound's value drops 50%, so it's 2:1. That comes out to $60 to pay off a £100 loan

For a studio of 60-100 people making on average 5+ cups of coffee a day?

No, there really isn't a cheaper option that will do the same thing and not shit itself after a single day of use. You're talking about commercial level shit at that point and it isn't cheap. Last studio I was in had close to 20k worth of bean machines, kitchen in it's entirety would have been north of 100k.

If you expect people to live there 16+ hours a day, you don't cheap out on the essentials, and that type of expenditure is honestly on the low end of the scale for AAA studios. Last time I was at WETA our chairs alone were like 2k and forget coffee machines, we had baristas and fucking 24/7 table service.

No, I believe he genuinely wants to make an amazing game. The problem is he's too much of a dreamer for his own good. He never knew where to draw the line on "features", "muh immersion", "muh new tech", and ship a product. See the story of the development of Freelancer for how badly he fucked his own product by his unrealistic vision.

He does want to make Star Citizen / Squadron 42 the best games they can be, but it's precisely that unchecked ambition that's bloated the games' feature list to hell and threatens their very existence. Someone needs to keep him in check and tell him when to be realistic, stop shooting for the stars, and ship a product. That person is currently his brother, Erin Roberts, who is in charge of the UK office of CIG. But sadly I fear even his brother doesn't have the power to give Chris the ass kicking he needs.

I was merely pointing out that a 13k coffee machine isn't a ridiculous purchase for a large studio and that coffee consumption in a studio in the creative industries.....and shit, most industries that employ adults....is a very real thing.

It's honestly horrifying, but I guess not all that surprising, that you clueless fucks haven't even worked some shit heel office job or engaged in any sort of social interaction with adults outside of shitposting apparently ever as otherwise you'd know that coffee is a thing, people drink it, it doesn't just magically appear, it costs money and comes from somewhere.

>USD150,000,000

Can someone explain how an idea for a space video game even managed to get $1,000 in funding, let alone $150 million? Who are all these people and what made them pick this particular game idea to throw their money away over?
>>
>>381803423

Any sensible person can immediately tell what projects are worth funding.

For instance funding a platformer or a rougelike is reasonable since those games can be produced in their predicted development time.

Funding a guy promising a photorealistic multiplayer space sim with millions of high-quality assets where the roadmap keeps getting updated with extra features is idiotic since such a project will never be ready.

Best case scenario is getting a shitty unfinished version of the game because they eventually ran out of funds and had to ship something with Chris apologizing for the state of the product and promising he'll fix it by asking for more money.

Additionally, anyone who has seen Synecdoche New York knows exactly what's going on here.

Unfulfilled hopes and dreams from previous games. Imagine it like having a cast on, and an itch that you literally cannot scratch. Well unlike you I have industry experience, and there's nothign easier than looking up a workforce of a studio. I strongly doubt CR industries is able to tie up industry winners on this TORTANIC of a project, because that would be pretty insecure/killing for your resume.

No, you don't fucking have any industry experience, you NEET. Make it a little less obvious next time.
>>
>>381805510

That is honestly exactly how it works.

I mean shit, most AAA studios have been doing that for a long time.

GTA is a pretty prime example of that sort of development.

I don't understand what you're trying to say. You think the people who spend that much don't make that much in a year? Nine times out of ten the people who spent such amounts pay for it with creditcards that require a certain number of zeroes in your bank account before they get issued. We're talking a balance of at least ten million here. I don't understand why people who know fuckall about certain things feel the need to post here, same with the coffee discussion rampant in this thread. If you're an uneducated, unsophisticated pleb you should just shut the fuck up about anything that isn't within your line of expertise.
