What made System Shock 1 and 2 great were the archaic textures that fit the game incredibly well. And the game wasn't dark. It was bright

They can't make the game bright like the original one because it doesn't fit with the modern realistic looking textures, therefore it will lose all its charm

The remaster looks like just a generic modern FPS, and the melee combat looks literally like Skyrim.

No I won't, because it'll be garbage.

the melee combat wasnt exactly ground breaking in the original game
if they do even just the same combat system, things should be alright with them

>wasn't amazing
i strongly disagree with that, i can't think of any games with better melee combat. note though i find games like devil may cry to have shitty weightless combat. unlike in doom where as soon as you got ammo, even with berzerk, there was no reason to use melee again, melee is viable throughout the game with genuine upgrades and patches and is a very powerful class. feels great, works great, simple but thats not a bad thing since buttonmasher shit isn't something strive for anyways
>>
>>381152369
What made SS1 great is the sense of player agency. You take on multi-stage objectives that span multiple levels and you aren't assisted by waypoints and not even automated notes/summaries of your objectives. You're given breadcrumbs in the form of logs and you piece them together in your head and carry out the task in levels with a lot of freedom. The objectives themselves are concrete and affect in the space station in tangible ways that can be visually observed within the station or from an outside camera, this makes completing them all the more rewarding.

SS2 failed to capture any of that and wasn't great at all.

i don't know whose side you are on or defending or who you are even quoting or anything but the level design in the first game wasn't very great. many areas were just copy pasted and lead to nothing. much of it almost feels procedural generated a-la daggerfall

No, you can save anywhere you want. It's a first-person adventure game and if you've played Deus Ex, Metroid Prime, Thief, BioShock, etc, then you'll have a basic idea of what to expect.

As for difficulty, you can set the difficulty level independently for combat, puzzles, and story. On lowest combat setting, enemies won't attack you unless you attack them so you can just focus on exploration and the story. Whatever you do though, don't turn the story difficulty all the way up or a time limit of 7 hours is imposed on you.
>>
>>381158089
That's not true at all.

>>
>>381157680
not really, you are encouraged to save often and it can be hard. there is a bigger focus on managing items and enemies are much less aggressive than doom. enemies can have resistances where some weapons are more effective than others, its one of the few games ive actually bothered to read the manual because there is a lot of helpful information. other than having the option to play fast (original players would probably advise against playing with mouselook but they don't realize how unfun they are trying to make the game for people used to mouselook). i recommend using system shock portable / system shock enhanced edition on steam. i use the steam version so this is for it, to change your controls you go to steamapps/common/ss1e and change controls.cfg. sshock.ini has options such as resolution but it will play like slug and crash often at for example 1920x1080, so highest you go should be 1024x768 for 4:3, and 854x480 for 16:9. yes 4:3 is bigger but you wont be able to tell, it will just look letterboxed and run worse at times

>>381158556
>>381158751
look at the top of that map topdown image. those triangle corridors with nothing not even enemies in them, they are in many areas across the game and only two times have i actually seen enemies or a door at the end in what seem like would be good combat areas. complete missed opportunity. other rooms are boxes with random elevated squares and many areas look like they are bugged with areas of floor depressing unnaturally with the level "design". when it clearly looks like they took time to make something coherent the area looks fucking fantastic, much of level 1 and 2 fit this. at other times it looks like they just threw as much shit in a room as possible. fuck you for pulling boogieman card just because someone says level design in system shock isn't great. i don't even think because its old its shit, compared to doom which even came out before system shock, system shock level design is bad
>>
>>381152369
ya, for sure agree. A lot of games that try this kind of aesthetic go for a very dark, broken, abandoned look. Dead space for example. SS2 is one of the few that really makes you believe that the entire space craft was fine and filled with people days ago. Everything is still there and working as it should be.
>>
>>381159649
>those triangle corridors with nothing not even enemies in them
wrong
you don't understand a single thing about level design, you are just some dumb faggot who thinks "doesn't look good so design is bad", your """opinion"" goes straight in the trash m8

>those triangle corridors with nothing not even enemies in them, they are in many areas across the game and only two times have i actually seen enemies or a door at the end in what seem like would be good combat areas

They do have enemies in them. And I honestly can't remember where else rooms like that appear. That's something System Shock did really well, have pretty much every floor have it's own geometric design and color pallet.

>>381160225
you are just being obnoxious, have i pinched a nerve? the game is made up of almost exclusively corridors with empty boxes at the end nostalgiafag, that is not good level design, being annoying to navigate doesn't instantly mean its this "complex classic level design". rarely do the areas compliment the enemies in them, suicide bombs that die in two pistol shots at the end of a hallway yeah thats a great usage of those enemies. the enemies cannot even navigate the levels they just get hung up on slopes in the corner and you think its fine

>>381160247
its been awhile, maybe you are right. i recall there being much more and all around the game but i dont see it on the map
