There is literally nothing wrong with being treated to a D&D-style Thief grave robber level that is absolutely swamped in atmosphere every so often. Thief 1 does a fantastic job with the split between "stealing from rich people" and "d&d thief".

Every time I want to replay a Thief game it's Thief 1 hands down because of the variety it provides, Thief 2 does not captivate me nearly enough even though it comes with a lot of gameplay improvements, new gadgets and an updated engine with better graphics.

The fact that Thief 2 did away with the D&D thief stuff almost entirely is one of the game's biggest flaws to me.

I think Factions was a little too short, I was still disappointed you couldn't explore the entirety of Kaineng. It's only 13 missions or what? And Prophecy on the other hand was too damn long. Nightfall struck a nice middle ground mission length wise. You are now also realizing that Guild Wars was perhaps the only game to do human multiculturalism right, portraying African, Middle-Eastern and European civilization in an imaginary fantasy setting with their own issues and challenges without shoehorning political opinions or shoving them down your throat.

I like the first game quite a bit. The dark gothic tastes, the horror vibe, I loved the tombs that everyone else complained about. But I preferred the sequel for a couple reasons.

First and foremost, the detailing of the mansions. Look at Lord Bafford's Manor, you got servant quarters that were remotely empty rooms and giant sections of nothingness in Assassins. Compare this to Lady Rumford's in Running Interference, suddenly there is furniture everywhere and even a closet will have objects sitting around in it. This detail just led to it being better fleshed in than the first game.

I also loved Thief 2 more because of its nonlinear behavior. The Bonehoard is fine, but the problem is that the entire route to the main tombs is pretty much one long route with only some minor side deviations here and there. When sneaking into Bafford's, you only got one route in. Cragscleft has a certain route to the top level mines... it isn't until The Sword that you start seeing some more open areas and these are usually just a few options. Compare all of this to something like a giant open map like Shipping and Receiving, something where the goal itself is moving like Kidnap, the massive number of routes in First City Bank or Trust, the freedom of choice generally allotted in Soulforge.

Plus I have a lot of rope bug issues in TDP that were fixed in T2, which means it is a lot more enjoyable moving around rooftops in Anglewatch than being flung off ropes constantly in The Lost City, a linear walk that takes about 30-40 minutes on average only to result in death on that Fire Tower.

Thief 2 didn't even have the most annoying enemies in TDP. Burricks are a nuisance, they barely communicate detection and they always get stuck on the ruined geometry of the world. Thief tried to have slants and creative geometry, but the problem is the AI didn't work well with it, and the one who usually ended up being a problem was the Burrick.

I am personally terrible with stress, especially after an anxiety disorder i got that was also part drug-related.

This I agree with. Thief 1 was amazing for how it took the word "thief" and ran with it to play with various different concepts. It felt more experimental, had more variety, than its sequel. As a concept, I think I prefer Thief 1 more, but I prefer the less buggy and detailed nature of the sequel.

I guess I just was fine with the shift to a modernistic environment as it was a shift in what the world was about. Technology took over, the natural environment was dying, and so D&D was but a pastime to the horrors of the current society. I can't really see how they could have done D&D levels and it make sense to Thief 2, the presence of the Mechanists needed to be felt, while the allure of D&D is the isolation from humanity. That could work in Thief 1 due to the whole focus on nature and the environment, not in Thief 2, so I just feel it as being a consequence of the world. I feel the levels that were offered were of such quality that I don't really miss D&D Thief too much, much like you Thief 1 doesn't really captivate me as much (we are talking 1st and 2nd favorite titles) due to the more linear design in general and the buggy nature. But the concept was absolutely amazing.
