The story is wonky but if you take it with a grain of salt the rest of the game is fine, minus having too many characters with development spread thin between them.

The element magic system is fun though, the visuals were stunning for the time anyway, and the music is absolutely fantastic.

The leveling system was nice too since it eliminates grinding. You go up a level every time you kill a boss, and every now and then from normal enemies you'll get a miniature level up.

Despite how much people shit on Disc 2, I always thought it was the right choice given how fucked the situation was regardless, specially now that we know the truth. I'd rather have a rushed conclusion than no conclusion at all.

Still, Takahashi should've known from the start they weren't going to finish everything on time (even now, the amount of work they made in just 2 years of development is still insane), and start cutting filler from Disc 1 to work on 2.

Despite that, I still think Disc 2 is the best part of the game, yeah there's pretty much only story, but it's just too fucking good.

While I really like the base design of the Dolls in X, seriously takayuki's transformation planning is top notch stuff, they do tend to turn into clusterfucks in the actual game as you fill out all those weapon slots. I think that detracts from them significantly.

Xenogears still has the strongest mechanical design in the series in my book. I like both though. I actually like the look of most Xeno- mechs, even Xenosaga has some alright designs.

Wrong. That shit is creative as fuck. You've got a system that integrates two different forms of combat where you can switch on the fly. You can fight in a mech and on foot and you can switch between these two different combat systems. Then you've got the deathblow and combo systems, where you dial in attacks and each button has a corresponding AP cost. Sure it's not the best combat systems in the world but it's quite unlike any other game at the time.

Which 'half' are we talking about? You're going to have to be more specific. It has it's influences like everything but what other game tells a story like Xenogears, well beside Xenosaga? The plot is probably one of the most creative and thought out parts of it.

Xenogears is the epitome of a game you could do better in a remake. It's still mostly virgin territory, in that how many sci-fi/fantasy mech JRPGs about psychological biblical metaphysics can you name? And it's not like Xenogears was perfectly executed considering they had to dramatically cut back the scope of disc 2 and the infamous English translation was done entirely by one guy. It's the type of game that has enough substance to warrant a remake but a shitty enough execution that anything a half way competent production could surpass. Imagine the game with a good battle system, well written character dialogue, an OST that isn't half as long as it should be, and enough fucking budget to actually finish the damn thing this time.
