The whole point of making the player's character Raiden for most of the game was to make Snake look more badass. Raiden is a hardcore motherfucker, child soldier, VR trained, cold-hard-killer. But next to the LEGENDARY SOLID SNAKE, he looks like a 'Gay boy' THATS what kojima was going for.

MGR is more in line with the series though. It has a codec with a large amount of conversations (that change depending on the location/context), it has a distinct boss squad, it has a memorable final boss, it has a clear beginning middle and end, it continues certain plot points from previous games, etc.
