Alright, I replayed Chemical Plant in Sonic 2 just now, there are only 2 new paths in this video but they mixed original Act.1 & 2 a lot closer together than I noticed since Sonic took what would normally be the big shortcut in Sonic 2 is now part of the normal path now.

It took him about 50 seconds to get to one of those brand new paths and it stops 30 seconds later to an older one (0:54-1:18). This happens again at 2:18-to the end of the video and even then that's mostly the same layout as the old game but you go there as a new path that leads to those block stairs things instead of it just being a punishment with for you failing to jump on a moving platform, also they changed the 1-up to a Bubble Shield in this case.

After replaying the original & seeing them mashed together so closely in the beginning, I'm not worried now. Also at 0:34 they fucked up by making the background part of the ground, they'll probably fix it but I noticed that.

This guy did his shit for free too, and he's composing Mania's music. The game will be stellar even without a "high budget" and 100% original levels, and THEN they'll get to make what you'd call a "proper" Sonic 4. i agree with you both. i didnt really like generations either. it had a terrible story, a really boring presentation, the classic levels sucked, and the modern levels werent anywhere near as good as sonic unleashed day levels. but the fact still stands that green hill and chemical were taken, remade, and are being taken yet again, and remade yet again. act 2 of each looks good but it feels like its whats holding the game back from being mind blowing. i have never seen smoother level design in a 2D sonic, the constant traps and bumps and ridges from the mega drive games are gone. if anything, it looks like rayman origins/legends with how free flowing it is.

Every Mario, every single one, has had easy opening segments. As far as creativity, I was referring to level design and collectable placement. Sunshine starts with cleaning paint to make the shine appear, which isn't creative and is boring to boot (like most of that game). Galaxy is the tutorial invasion thing. 64's opening is great but there's a reason my previous post said "since 64" and not "including 64".

Fair enough on creativity. I feel Mario's been sort of coasting on laurels for a while anyway. Like it's all "creative", out there and seemingly imaginative in a surface level sort of way but doesn't feel it at all.

Not sure about Chronicles, but Boom was sabotaged by SoJ by them forcing Boom into the 3 exclusive Wii U Sonic games deal when the game was in mid development. Boom was running on an engine not made to run on the Wii U which lead to them having to crunch time to cobble together a (sorta) working engine which made several glitches appear that BRB didn't have time to fix as well as this crunch time keeping them from polishing stuff they were planning to fix near the end of development.

I mean honestly, Sonic compared to Mario is a fucking joke. Odyssey added some really interesting features and took a risk - taking control of inanimate and animate objects to solve puzzles (that bullet bill playthrough), a good 2d to 3d transition gameplay, coins as currency, dynamic map with different ways to complete the map.

Meanwhile fucking Sonic just goes back to a linear 2d map (not even designed to let you run fluidly, those shitty platform placements) and a 3D Temple Run style gampeplay where you just go straight and have "press x to complete action" scenes. The only new thing they added was "make your own character".

I'm fucking sick of Sonic Team and Sega making this franchise even shittier and shittier.
It seems like their team thinks of the shitty story before designing maps and enemies (and their placement). I have bought every fucking game since release, and if this game fails to deliver, I am done with the franchise.

Well from the look of the 2D segments of Forces, they are going back to the different routes in the stages. I saw some alternate paths that were in the high road and some paths in the low road (this can be especially seen clearly in the Custom Character stages).

OC has various different weapons based on all the pre-existing Wisps, each one giving a new angle on platforming and progressing through the stage as well as using a grapple hook for homing attack and mobility. Its Colors without Boost and is a playstyle used to incorporate Wisps in a way that doesn't get in the way of players boosting through stages (which is why Modern Sonic only has White Wisps). Plus without boost, the devs were able to tailor these stages to focus on Wisp powers, giving different routes within stages depending on whatever wispon you choose.

Classic Sonic is pretty much just standard (minus perfect matching genesis physics) 2 button + Dpad sidescrolling Sonic.

A big problem that has been plaguing the industry is that the game companies have become so out of touch with the things people actually want. Not that they should just listen to fans because fans are often stupid and don't really know what they want, but a good developer will mix the good things they know fans want with the things that fans don't know they want yet.

Bless Nintendo who're finally getting their heads out of their asses and doing things for the fans again. All the other major companies need to follow their example.

So at least 10. But with that, it's 50/50, and there are supposed to be more old than new. So 11 at bare minimum.

If the 60/40 ratio is right, then probably more like 12 Zones at bare minimum. Meaning 2 games will double dip with reps.
