At the end he realizes that what he's doing is wrong. He leaves a voicemail to Max explaining he's so sorry and never wanted to hurt anyone, he just wanted to impress Mr Jefferson, which, btw fucking kills Nathan. He's a troubled boy horribly manipulated by his father figure.

No, he's a grand sociopath, whose shit doesn't stuck up to his problems and actions. No amount of daddy's issues can justify his stupidity and explain why a guy, whose parents own the town can op out of this. He knew what he was doing with them, he posed for a shoot with Chloe friend that then inexplicably disappeared. This isn't deep, there is no psychology in this, in fact, they couldn't even properly write a character with daddy's issues which is probably the easiest thing at this point.

You have no idea what young men are ready to do to be loved by their father figure, it's one of the most important part of their lives, which explains why single mother raise children who end up becoming thugs or homosexuals.
