So i'm a massive FF fan but i've never touched either of the MMO games, mostly because I know it would end up sucking up a lot of valuable time. But I just graduated basically, so i'm thinking of starting FFXIV, is this a good time to start now with the new expansion coming out? Will it take forever to level up?

Bare in mind, I can only play it on PS4 for the moment, how is it on PS4?

Only thing is, you'll have to take some time doing the UI, especially if you're using controller but it's totally doable.

As for leveling up, there are a lot of options now to help with leveling (there will be level jump potions if you're impatient @ $25 a pop).

It was made to work on PS4, you'll have no trouble with it if you're worried just because it's on console.

As for the time it takes to get to Stormblood? It won't take that long if you skip the cutscenes especially with the increase to XP gain they'll be making soon, but I feel if you skip the cutscenes you miss a big part of the game since you're forc ed to do it you might as well enjoy it for what it is.

There is no "bad time" to start XIV since it is designed for new and returning players to be able to catch up and hit the "this is where everyone is grinding now" point with very little "catch up grinding" involved.
You just need to clear the story quests to progress, and the game is mostly singleplayer JRPG outside of dungeons and endgame content. It is a pretty long journey (A Realm Reborn can be very slow and boring since it is designed like a huge tutorial for people that never played MMOs before, but it gets better in Heavensward), but if you are a "massive FF fan" you are probably already used to this kind of thing.

It's a very good time, the road to level cap/endgame will become super smooth with basically zero grinding up untill the end. Btw FFXIV is very story-driven (although that's not always a good thing, it does have its boring moments) so even if you're not used to MMOs you can actually just treat it as a mainline FF. It's time consuming to get to the end, but just because it's long and not because of the grind, so if you do like the journey, why not.

Why do spells go off when you move and the casting still has about 0.3 seconds left? It does this weird and floaty animation and continues to cast the spell

most of the time the game doles out skills in a way that makes sense, one of the biggest problems(among others) with potd being the premier method of leveling is that you get the skills way too fast so you can't actually learn where they fit in naturally

blm specifically kinda throws you into the deep end since your entire playstyle changes completely at or near level cap
it was especially bad at hw launch since neverreap was one of the only two endgame dungeons, and that dungeon either made you switch off blm entirely or you got gud real quick

The server updates your movement position every 0.3s, WoW does this too. If you move right before a cast is finished, the server is too late the register the movement to cancel the spell so it goes off.

Great time actually. There's a large influx of new and returning players.

I recommend rolling a tank class because they didn't introduce any new ones this expansion, and it's a role that is always in demand. On top of that, 1-50 is getting a massive EXP boost to help players catch up.

If you buy the bundle or just get Stormblood eventually, then you can start the Red Mage class when you hit 50 and beat the base game. Both new jobs start at Lv 50 so you don't have to level them all over.

Use Poetics to get lv50 i120 gear (ironworks), it will last until about lv55.
They said Poetics will be used for both lv50 and lv60 gear so I assume they will remain while Lore and Scripture will become obsolete (still tradeable for Poetics though, as it happened for Esoterics).

Try Mudfish.net. It's simple to set up, and dirt cheap. I don't think there's a trial, but you can put down a dollars worth of data and see if you like it. I bought $10 worth, and have only used 0.03 of my data and I've been playing all weekend. Brought my ping down from 200+ to a fairly comfy 60-90 ping. (I live in East Coast)

Blizzard has actuall east coast servers here in the states, so it makes sense that it runs well. I really don't understand why Square didn't put it down in texas or something.

Does anyone have any advice for a fledgling 54 PLD? I always feel like I'm doing something wrong when it comes to trash, I have Shield Oath active but I find it hard to manage mobs still due to a lack of AoE abilities. Save steel peak and EF until after twin snek. You don't need to double weave bb+ir, and replace the third snap punch with ToD, and replace ToD with fracture. Other than that it's pretty solid.

When Tanking, I switch between depending on emnity, but usually focus on the one with the highest health so I know I can button mash without having to pay much attention to switching targets

I played it for a few months and cleared all of the casual content outside of some raids. My thoughts are:

*Combat feels very unresponsive. Every action is 0.5 seconds in the past and the long GCD compounds this issue. I've ran out of aoes and watch them slowly fall and hit me while I'm not in them (due to the response lag determining you were in the circle). Logically this make sense that you were slow, but visually it makes no sense

*Endgame feels lacking. From what I played of Alexander, the raid environment is so broken up and linear while the encounters are nothing special. This may change with other fights, but I wasn't enthralled.

*Why is everything gated behind arbitrary quests? You can't even equip materia until you do some quests and also have a crafting profession leveled.

*Why is Alphapud such a cakeboy? He has a nice skirt though.

Good gear and switching targets cycling enmity even though flash doesn't give damage it still builds emnity scaled with your gear if you are 54 and you dont have 54hq/53 dungeon gear please gear up a little its doable without but harder.


It gets better at level 60 with good gear scorn and 2 flashes and some combos here and there is all you will really need it gets really easy. Keep at it.
