Yeah. I mean, at least they tried something different by making your friends a more active part of the game. The problem is that people who play Pokemon don't necessarily actually like JRPGs or want the equivalent types of cutscenes found there that break up the gameplay with chatter.

It didn't really bug me though because I was just trying to beat the game as fast as possible and then I went back after to fill out the Pokedex and pick shit up from areas I missed, at which point I was surprised how many areas there were that you are out of the way of the path you follow during the story.

It's not a 10/10 game by any means but knowing what to expect from a Pokemon game I don't have too many complaints besides Z-moves making the piss-easy main game even easier and having to access the obnoxious bouncy fun land castle area every time I want to do something online. I can appreciate some of the quality of life changes they made like replacing HMs with key items and being able to accept new Pokemon/eggs even if your party is full.

Most are not over designed, there are a few (usually legends) that have a bit too many baubles, but otherwise they're fine.
Pyroar itself is far removed from the original style if that's your thing. Smooth, plastic looking mane, rounded features for almost every part of it.

Not that I've played Pokemon for a while now, but in general most things after gen 2 look better than most of the originals.

The bulk of gen 1 Pokemon look like they didn't go through any kind of design process, as if they just went with the first design that came out and didn't bother tweaking it. Which is ironic considering those are the only Pokemon that actually got redesigned after launch.

And gen 2 mostly looks like Pokemon that didn't make the cut for gen 1, plus some Ruby/Sapphire design philosophy precursors like Skarmory and the legendary dogs.

Honestly, the over-the-top premise of dimensional invaders vs. Pokemon could have been fantastic.
But it fell completely flat when:

-Only the jellyfish one exists as far as the plot and plot battles are concerned
-They weren't actually The Thing-tier horrors that tried to emulate humans and Pokemon
-They turned out to be catchable instead of superbosses

But at least the villain was a bit creepier this time, and tied into the other characters a bit more. The fact that she killed her own childhood Pokemon team and preserved them in ice so they'd remain 'beautiful' forever is downright the darkest thing in any Pokemon game.

I overwhelmingly prefer the new (as in, starting from 15 years ago) Pokemon design philosophy, but I agree Alolan forms look terrible. The only one that looks better is Muk, all the rest are either equivalent or far worse than the originals.

On the flipside I firmly believe that Mega Pidgeot, Mega Beedrill, Mega Alakazam and Mega Scizor are infinitely better than the original designs for those Pokemon. And although I dislike mega evolution as a game mechanic, I'd retroactively replace the original designs of those Pokemon if I could.
