Computer science actually requires a lot of mathematics. Most programmers arent computer scientists though, and as a real engineer its cringy to hear someone who doesnt even know newtons laws call themselves an engineer because they know how to write a for loop.

STEM is just where the kids too autistic to make 7 figures in business and too virginal to have fun in libarts go in an attempt to make 6 figures and have a girl settle for him when he's 30 (as he'll be doing unpaid internships exclusively for the first few years even though he berates everyone else for that) - it's the beta male option.

I might have grown up with computers and vidya gaems, but over the past 3-5 years, I have grown to fucking hate computers and vidya gaems and everyone who likes those things

mostly because I played around making levels for games and trying to get into webdev and learn a little of an actual language, but just hated it the whole time and hated everyone in the communities for those things

im a dropout and joined the reserve force for a quick buck but it's turned out to be a cushy and surprisingly well-paying gig, so I have no intention to go back to school, really. what few dreams I have left are largely things you don't have to go get a degree in to do anyway

This is a butthurt Liberal Art Degree kind of post.

CS requires a lot of math and conceptualization that you don't really see in some other stem fields. In mechanical engineering, for example; you work mostly with practical real life physical problems. CS is more abstract in it's problem solving. There usually isn't one clear cut simple solution to everything.

One of the mantras they hammer into you in CS when you are starting is Object Oriented Programming. Every piece of code you write that isn't in low level programming language has to be written in away that it can interact with one another. You are writing methods and classes that will connect to one another and expand upon each other in a way that you can cater to your clients constant demands. You basically have to write code in a way that it can always be updated and all the pieces work/fit together without any errors or legacy bugs. It's a lot of social engineering alongside math.

That said, I wouldn't say CS major is more math intensive than an Aeronautical degree or Physics major, but to say it isn't a math is idiotic.
>>
>>379183428
It's an ever present problem that most people don't think about when building things, whether it's essential infrastructure or some guy's really expensive artisan house. It's only going to be more in demand as water encroaches on things that were never designed with water erosion in mind.

Are they perhaps Indian CS people? Because, I majored in CS and for whatever reason Indians loved putting recursion into everything and it fucked up several of my projects whenever I got stuck with one. They tend to write code very fast (a lot of copy paste) without commenting on each method/class. So it's a nightmare to go through when something actually goes wrong.

The funny thing is, I'm majoring in CS and even though my OOP teacher tried to hammer this into people's heads, most couldn't apply the knowledge of it just a week later. Only one of my friends there and me still stick to those practices.

But yeah, this is one of the things I've always felt I had a knack for myself. I love the idea of making code that can easily be understood by others, can be easily refactored, and can be easily expanded. I love using different data structures and different data types to reduce memory footprint or CPU footprint. And I hated it when I had a few programming classes in my major in which we were just taught to copy-paste code and I had to go home and try to understand shit by myself so I could make use of optimization practices on it and not just think the code is doing magic.

Holy shit, don't do that and I would talk to the department head if teachers are actually encouraging this. I did my CS degree back in 07-10. I went to a decent tech school, one of the biggest NO-NOs they taught us is copy-pasting code. It's one of the easiest ways to create legacy bugs. It is an awful practice. Code should always be typed out line by line. I don't know how many times I wrote a program with 4-5k lines of code and was freaking out when it didn't compile. After going through everything the error turned out to be something simple like a space before a semicolon or just forgetting the semicolon.

>thinking any real economist compares it to hard sciences

Economics is a study of the interactions between society and our financial institutions. Models are flawed because nobody can tell what people will do. However, we can determine how systems will be affected by changes to individual input and use that knowledge to drive policy decisions (or determine good investments, if you work for a business).

Nobody who actually works with an economist thinks we are anything more than highly specialized policy and data experts. In a lot of fields, that specialization is very useful.

Here's the thing, it's not. What's saturated are CS degrees, but not the market. Considering the degree can mean theoretical or application it's not too surprising. Dig a bit deeper and you'll notice people who think they know how to program don't actually understand why some things work. Which is totally fine if what you're making doesn't require performance or anything. Then at the end of it all is HR has to look at retards who seem reasonable, people who made some mistakes, someone who made none, and referrals. Who they continue to move the interview process with? That's why it's hard difficult, not because the market is saturated.

It really depends on the teacher. I found Calc 3 to be a fucking joke, easy as shit. My professor was very good at explaining problems and was always available for help. He didn't rely on his GSA's to do everything. Friend of mine was taking the same major as me in a different school and had to drop out of Calc 3 because it was too much for him. I'd say discrete math was harder, but only because I almost failed with Polya's theorem on the oral exam. I managed to recreate it as I went, though.

Logic, while conceptually hard, was really great. Even finished Mendelson's book even though our course covered only part of it. Insanely cool stuff. Before it I thought of Gödel theorems as some mystical beings. This book somehow managed to make you prove them without you even noticing it. I was "wait, what? Electrical engineering is also legit.

If you don't know what it actually is. It's usually working with semi-conductor technology to design the next generation of computer chips.

I remember my car mechanic blue collar dad freaking out thinking I would become an electrician or something when mentioning electrical engineering.

The field is also experiencing a big boom right now due to AI and the design of neural net hardware. So I expect the prestige and reputation of Electrical engineers to rise in the coming years.

Because we spent 5 years busting our asses to hell learning extremely hard shit and breakneck pace. Meanwhile most others spent their time being degenerates, partying, and complaining about super simple courses. Hell, some of them are even smug about wasting their degree having one night stands with sluts (it's not a matter of envy, just pathetic). Now, after the degree is done, these people claim to be equal, they complain about not having a job or money, and they protest against us having the aforementioned money because we actually worked for it.

So no, we are not equal, I'm better than you, be it due to intelligence or just willpower to actually do something that matters, why the fuck would I not admit it? After all, you ended up far below me due to your life choices, did you not?

It has little to no application outside it's own sphere.
For comparison, if you pick things like CS, Electro, Chemistry, you can apply those things in your hobbies. You can program in your free time, you can make gadgets with electricity, or bombs with chemistry.
ME has nothing like that. You can learn to weld, that's the only thing.

I guess it doesn't matter if you consider Applied physics. But personally I hate spending time on something that I can use outside my job.

People spazz out way too much about education to the point of it becoming some banal form of tribalism rather than the helpful sharing of interests it should be. It's about chosing what to do with your life - there's no point in being an ass to other people about it. We all do things for different reasons; some might get an education based on what they enjoy, others might just be interested in the money. Either way, it's meaningless to be a dick about other people's motivations.
