The SC2 editor is just more unintuitive and obtuse for doing simple tasks. Making a new unit in the WC3 editor takes significantly less time than in SC2's.

That said the popularity system is the biggest factor for crippling SC2's customs. I got a game to the first page of the popularity since it was a gimmick third-person shooter I worked on in the beta and had ready for launch, but it got overtaken by Desert Strike clones after a few days. Dota 2 then managed to have an even worse editor and still use the fucking popularity system. Now I'm just hoping SC Remastered customs are okay.

Well guessing subscription numbers is pretty tricky so expecting 400k is reasonable. They probably just looked at everquest and used that as a basis.

I think they made more smaller regions because
1) more biomes
2) so everyone can visit the places that are talked about in the previous games
3) make people feel like they are making more progress by going into new regions quicker
4) make the map fuller and more alive

Also the amount of extra content they could make is actually pretty small. Rogue was their most developed class, you would expect that adding extra spells and smoothening the gameplay of every class to be like rogues is easy, but they never did that until they made xpacks where they added new, much needed, spells and talents. Even stuff like voice chat was very late, you would also expect multispecs to be available quickly, but that took 2 xpacks. I think if you could go back and tell them about how many subs they get you can do a lot more than just slap them in the face and make bigger maps. You could make the whole thing better since you start off other metrics.

Conjecture. Why wouldn't the Tauren, given time, not have joined the Alliance if there was no other alternative and their closest allies the NE had already joined?
