I really enjoyed the game, but I have to agree that the dungeons were garbage compared to the older games, and that the towns were rather boring.

I'd blame it on how bad the environments look. The character models improved a lot since Xillia, whether you like them or not they're technically much better. The environments seem even less uninspired and more modular, though. Everything looks like Elympios, asset wise..

XV had one puzzle the whole game.

There's many things wrong with this game such as level design, most of the songs in the soundtrack are well below average, Playstation 3 graphics, T-poses, character animations aren't great most of the time and the equipment (enhancement) system is quite confusing and not very well designed.
Yet it's by far my favorite JRPG (and I played a lot of them)

The cast is 10/10, the story is fucking great, the lore about this world is amazing too. The combat system, you love it or you hate it but in my case I definitely loved it.
I really want a third game where we would beat the fuck out of the heavenly seraphim.

I found the game boring. The world is so goddamn bland. The playing fields, the towns, everything. The battle system, while easy to get the hang of, is boring. I would've liked it better as turn based, even going so far as to say something akin to Cold Steel's combat system, and you could abuse the fuck outta that.

The village outs the only guy that can fight demons and somehow Artorius' wife is in the wrong place at the wrong time and gets sacrificed.
Then suddenly the his master's shady friend appears right after with all the information he needs.
Fatty was definitely pulling the strings and using Artorius as a face to enact his masters plan to purge the world of demon blight.

I don't get hard-ons for MUH REVENGE characters but since Velvet was more than a ball of anger, it worked out fantastically. More Velvets and Yuris and less Assbels and Judes, please.

True there isn't much wrong, but that doesn't make for a good game. The story is kinda contrived and the character development is oddly paced out. The combat is a step in the right direction after the terrible zestiria system, but it's not a good system yet either. I'm playing through Hearts R right now and unless it suddenly takes a turn for the worse it's already much better than Berseria.

Vesperiafags are vocal to the point of being obnoxious about their game, but it is good. If you have an Xbox360 or are willing to hack your PS3, go for it.

Graces f has the best combat I've seen in a Tales game but the story is ass. Best end-of-battle scenes and some of the best skits though.

Abyss is love it or hate it, and it's the first time free run was introduced so the battle system feels clunky and sometimes unfair.

Symphonia is babby's first Tales. It's okay overall- story is good, cast is good, but it's not the 10/10 game people imply it to be. It can feel slow and dated if you're used to Xillia and the like.

Play Phantasia to see where it comes from. The PSX version is probably the easiest to find and emulate, and it's worth your time to do so. Just keep in mind it's a SNES game from '95 so it has some outdated shit in it that can get on your nerves.

To be the direct answer to Zestiria that came right after....boy did the franchise really need that more at this exact moment than ever. I don't necessarily prefer the opposite though with raging psychopath MC's cause they can often lack depth too. A nice flawed character with more than one personality trait and a range of emotions is fine. Sometimes I think Japan tends to overkill it on the whole 4 personality (Sanguine, Choleric, Phlegmatic, Melancholic) types by making characters all one but none of the other. This is possibly because it makes it simpler for otaku to decide who they want to waifu/husbando .

Yes there is, it's too fucking long and comes with really bad pacing.

Even though I dropped it I can say it was also one of the better experiences I've had with the franchise. The characters are on point, which is something the games had struggled with since Phantasia and the combat, while still not as fun as Xillia's did its job.
