When you're allowed to actually have your whole party and customize them as you wish it can be kind of fun. That's when the game takes off the training wheels which is way too fucking late, so it's still not worth playing. FF13-2 does it better, and adds a cute monster system with it. I'd recommend that if you like the gameplay at all.

Everything else is irredeemable garbage though.

In my personal opinions it's better in terms of gameplay but worst in terms of characters and plot since they're basically both non existent.

Like my kingdom just kind of gets taken over one day off screen and then I hear about on the radio then do a bunch of random things then fight the last boss then it ends.

I think I'm the only one on the planet who likes the last section of the game better than the first half because I find plot important.

Lightning has really long scrawny legs and no hips.

Childbirth will be very difficult for her.

Nah I liked the end better too. Everyone shits on chapter 13 but I enjoyed it. I disagree about characters though. XV's didn't develop as much as XIII's but they were at least mostly likeable. Outside of Sazh nobody in XIII was likeable. They generally got better in the sequels although Lightning was ruined. I still think LR is the best but XV is better than the other two.

X is the original sin for many of the problems people see with XIII, from the stronger focus to a dramatic, more personal story [although you could conceivably blame VIII for that, but that problem wasn't present in IX], stripping the games of its overworld and doing away with the obfuscation of linearity it provided. X's gameplay is not as big a break as the one in XIII though.

It has among standard battle themes in the series and the combat is pretty flashy and dynamic to watch.

For me both games design is pretty rigid.

I find the start of FFXIII pretty awful and restrictive, it's kinda like they wanted you to try roles and combinations before giving you freedom of experimenting with them. It's painful to restart the game due to not having any option to play the game like you want until half of the game. Also level caps tied to the story made the combat selection of roles and combinations limited.

FFXV in the other hand is pretty restrictive about your movement in the open world, invisible walls everywhere and the world was pretty uninspired. After chapter 8 the game becomes linear and restrictive about what you can do making it boring.

I kinda like XV more than XIII if only due to being somewhat amused at the start of the game and outright hating a lot of stuff in FFXIII trilogy including its characters (especially lightning). I feel XV is just outright meh, while XIII is bad.

X's ending is like an inverse bell curve. If you don't think at all, it's a straightforward "aw he died" tragic ending. If you think about it a bit, it's very confusing and leaves a lot of threads unresolved. If you think about a lot, read between the lines, and look at all the ultimanias etc. it makes sense again and is quite interesting. With a bit of refinement FFX could be GOAT storywise.

XII could be even better but it requires a much more extensive reworking, to the point where it'd arguably be a different story

I really liked Oerba as a culmination of the loneliness felt throughout the game and the futility of fighting fate Dust to Dust is also great
Sazh was the only character I liked although I was genuinely interested in the fate of the rest of the characters even if I didn't really like them. It seemed pretty awful that Snow was the character I could bare most besides Sazh.

So yesterday I actually decided to start FFXIII for myself to see whether it's as bad as people say, and honestly I didn't hate it.
Mind you I only got like an hour into the game, but I found it to be fine.
So far the battle system has been serviceable, but it's very underwhelming.
I hope that it'll probably get more complex as I get further in the game.

As for everything else so far its been great.
The music and art design is all top notch and the story has me hooked from the start, I'm looking forward to this playthrough.

Biggest issue with the game is it takes way too long to fully unlock everything, the system was clearly intended for a three man party but you don't get it until 15 hours or so. Once you get there though it's a lot of fun, especially the optional hunts.

Snow's casting animation as Ravager is a lot faster so he can build chain gauges faster and Snow learns Imperil as a Saboteur and is a great Sentinel and Commando.

Only role he's not good at is Synergist and that's why you have Fang as party leader since she learns Haste, Faith and Bravery.

These are all true. This game has a fully fleshed out pantheon of gods and functions in its lore. It's the only game where every attack matters and no attack gets replaced by a stronger attack. The characters are all multilayered and humanly flawed. And the environments are a great blend of classic fantasy and sci-fi. It's on another level compared to the past games in the franchise.

True, but then again you could argue that the tradeoff for its pantheon was to do away with the budding crystal mythos that had inadvertedly grown into its own thing across the earlier games. Honestly I find the interplay between the Crystals and the Void to be a lot more interesting the Bhunivelze's eternal self-aggrandizing quest, but naturally it could be just a matter of personal taste. Bhunivelze and his assorted creations in my eyes doesn't bring anything unique to the table that justifies losing the Void as this impersonal force of nature acting as an universal janitor that occasionaly incarnates into a world-destroying avatar and tries to reset reality whenever people screw with the crystals too much. It was mysterious and quite interesting in its vagueness, with totally unrelated games and characters nevertheless sharing a background connection through it. Sometimes when you make the metaphysical aspects of a setting completely visible and non-ambiguous like FNC did some of the charm is stripped away in the process.

And we're just going to agree to disagree with regards to the combat system, because I honestly feel every change it introduced has been to the worse, the stagger bar especially.

See, I always feel like it's a double edged sword. Maybe I just never farmed for end-game gears, but I always use Lightning as leader when I need to hit max stagger quickly, and then Fang when I need to do lots of damage. Even with max stagger, I have a hard time hitting above 300k with Lightning, whereas Fang can easily go for around 700k per hit if you exploit her animation. And then you have Highwind to put a nice end to the stagger period. But with Fang as leader, I don't have access to AoO and I can barely get to max stagger before the enemy recovers. So when I have Fang as leader, any time I waste buffing is less stagger time, and when I'm Lightning, I can't capitalize on staggers.

I've played all of the main ones, but could not stomach any of the XIII games for a few hours, not only because of the gameplay, because I absolutely hated the restrictions and lack of content beyond the story and the fights, but specially for how much of a fucking awful anime cringefest the overdramatic character interactions in the game are. I thought it was ok, it was definitely my least favorite Final Fantasy of those that I have finished, but not terrible in my opinion. The combat was mediocre but not much more than other FF games. The linearity equally is not that different from many former FF games, more linear than most but people don't cry 'wah linear' nearly as much about 10 for example. The plot for me was where it set itself apart as being worse over all than the other games in the series, but not so much worse that it was garbage. It was an average AAA jrpg that got a bad rap for being called Final Fantasy while being what it was.

The only Persona game I've played was that one with the yellow suit chinese dude. He was pretty cool.
I'm not sure how much handholding new Personas have but FF13 could work very well with Mario&Luigi Dream Team.

Lore is actually pretty cool and the actual plot machine godlings trying to Eclipse the fuck out of the pampered human race to summon their creator wasn't terrible besides a few poorly executed things
Combat is fun
Sazh is cool, Fang is olev, Lightning is Mom-Squall and nowhere near as awful as people make her out to be, Snow is OK
The kids are a little less insufferable if you don't play the game dubbed

Shame that 55% of the game could've been reduced to like 15% with something like ATEs and there could've been a reasonable bridge to -2 if there was actually a real hub/village on Pulse and not just a ghost town that you spend all of 20 minutes in

FF13 isn't great, but I still enjoyed it.

It was very... of the time. It will always make me think of my days of popping molly, going to EDM shows, listening to synthpop, and getting grinded on by festival sluts.

I liked the story and characters. All of them go through a arc of being shitty and coming into their own. When I played the game I loved the theme of being persecuted and pushing through to find your own destiny.
The gameplay is rudimentary, but I feel that most rpgs battles are as well, but in a different way.
The graphics we're great for the time too.
