Waaaay ahead of its time. In 2009 most people still had slow DSL at best, and a lot of people used dial-up. Playstation NOW is a better idea but it's useless for twitchy games due to latency.

There will never be a point where playing games on VR is as effortless as playing them with traditional mediums. People play video games to relax and do shit when they don't have to do shit. Getting VR setup and organizing your room to make it usable is a chore that gets old fast.

What it would let game developers do is keep their hands on the game and its code while only distributing its appearance. No piracy, no cheating, no modding, a total stranglehold on the code of their game. At the same time, 10 seconds of thinking is all it takes to figure out some potential issues and flaws (maybe they will throttle you after a few hours by increasing input lag).

I don't know why Sony is so retarded that they thought $4.99 for FOUR HOURS of steaming for one game that game out years ago would be acceptable.

Shoulder view really ruins the game though, the maps were designed with low visibility in mind. Suddenly being able to see around you easily without sacrificing control (like first person mode does) renders all the detection gimmicks the game was balanced around pointless.

I've always wondered about this, say you get your brain hooked straight into a game couldn't i it be possible to alter your brain's perception of time. the software just didn't evolve above the gimmick 3D was. With VR it's not quite clear yet. But no one is going to buy a Rift or some other expensive piece of hardware so they can walk around in some virtual map with no gameplay and terrible textures.

If VR is ever going to take off it needs to get a game that is insanely good and also clearly only playable with a VR device. The other possibility is that VR porn becomes interactive and realistic enough that it basically becomes a glorified masturbation aid.

Maybe, I would imagine that our brain's perception of time is at least somewhat affected by outside stimuli, but I don't really have a fucking clue. But to simulate a lifetime in an hour I don't think so, because you'd basically need your brain to be working something like 700,800 times as fast as normal wouldn't you which I mean I have no clue if it could or not, but it doesn't sound likely. I don't even know if that's physically possible given it's dependant of the speed of electrical signals.

Dude, I'm not that guy but claiming that vr has been a success for gaming so far is disingenuous, at best.
Multiple devs have come out saying that the only way they can make money making vr games is if a vr company subsidizes the development, which is the equivalent of saying: "This platform is dead".
The final hope is that some modders make something so mind-boggling that it resparks the mainstream interest in vr.
Weather or not that will happen remains to be seen, but so far buying vr to actually play GAMES rather than experimental toys is a ridiculous proposition.

By the time vr is cheap enough to become widely available, we'll already have AR, which is a much more interesting thing, with far greater potential.

>>
>>377765959
Well yeah, but when AR comes out it'll be as shitty as VR is right now so no one will buy it straight away anyway.

For VR to succeed, I think it needs a couple of things

>Standalone console
As it stands, VR requires you to have a beast of a computer or a PS4 with accessories no one cares about, and even then you probably want a PS4 Pro. VR costs as much as or even more than a console, but you still need another machine anyway. If VR was its own console that would make it easier to use without having to worry about specs and easier to buy.

>Motion sickness
A lot of VR has you just standing still. Either the games don't require movement or you can simply teleport everywhere. That really limits what you can do in the game, and apparently a big factor for this is that moving when you're not in real life causes motion sickness for people. You're going to have to solve this before VR can get any better or more popular

>Price tag
It's just too expensive for most people to want to spend money on. It's not just a case of whether you can afford it, it's also if you're willing to take that much of a risk. A good idea might be to lower the price of the headsets just to get them into homes and introduce people to VR and try to make back your money long term with games.

>Exclusivity
Its way too early in the game for consolewarring. It's making everyone stop and wait to see who the "winner" will be, but at this rate everyone will be a loser instead.

CDs, arbitrary data format/delivery, doesn't matter. Wikipedia still isn't a substitute for an actual teacher in the same way that an encyclopedia isn't a substitute for an actual teacher.

How has government changed? It's still a pile of shit, still inefficient, and all the senators still get together in person to discuss and pass laws.
We still have to show up in person to vote.

>>377775178
It has AFFECTED the government, but the way the government works is still unchanged in any meaningful way.

Dude Other M announcement was hype as fuck. Serious story-driven Nintendo games are so fucking rare, so suddenly seeing Metroid turn into a full fledged 'cinematic experience' was crazy. Like imagine if a Legend of Zelda trailer was released and it had Witcher-like cinematics. People would fucking explode.

Of course it wasn't until the game released that people realized that Metroid was NOT the franchise to do this with and that Team Ninja are fucking shit. Also no one could have expected Sakamoto going off the deep end. Up until that exact point the dude pretty much did no wrong.

Couldn't VR companies subsidize VR game development by not taking any cut of the profits? Feels like this would be a smart move to grow the install base while they figure out other ways to monetize VR.

I was hyped for VR, but primarily because I liked the idea of shitposting on /v/ while lying on my back in bed.

The article was about the columnist nay-saying shit people were predicting about how the internet would work based stupidly on what was current at the time, the guy even mentions Negroponte's predictions in the article and proceeds to shit on them as if Negroponte wouldn't know what the fuck he was talking about.

Also I specifically remember being able to use the internet in '95 and could search for simple shit like dates with relative ease. Encyclopedia Encarta was a common program suite back then besides.

Definitely predicting success, unless it's predicting the success of something bad. Being wrong about predicting failure only negatively affects the most invested of terrible consolewarring fags. But being wrong about success fucks over the actual people who enjoyed what there was on a console, as few as there may be.

Hell I still find it impressive that the 3DS can project images an inch in front of the screen, without glasses, but even Nintendo gimped the effect later on because of silly eye strain scares.

Back then the idea of global web indexing wasn't even likely, given the obvious limitations of traffic, data allocation, and a long etc.
We all agree that his prediction were wrong 22 years later, but put yourself in that era and his thoughts aren't really that far-fetched or just nay-saying, it wasn't uncommon at all to not be able to find something, hell, if you had an history encyclopedia, it could have been even more efficient to open it up and look in there instead of using the internet.
Also Encarta wasn't free, more over in 95 it was a very rare commodity to even have enough disk space to store it.

Funny I recall a recent government scuffle about how the US and its aging nuclear code program and how updating its procedures to incorporate modern computing would actually make it less secure.

Its now even less efficient due to internet bullshit but you can sit on your ass and tweet obscenities at your congressman as consolation.

Encarta was two CD's, you overstate its vastness. The WAD's for Star Wars Dark Forces could take up more space then that.

From this article:
http://www.relativelyinteresting.com/comparing-todays-computers-to-1995s/

>Hard Drives: One-gigabyte hard drives are common this year, compared with the 400-500 megabyte drives of 1994. The price difference between the two is only about $200, and it’s worth it.

Two CD's had the capacity of 1400 MB, windows 95 required only 55 MB of free space on the hard drive, consider that.

I have a friend who swears by the Steam controller, he says that the trackpads + motion controls feel much better, and are more accurate than a regular gamepad.
Can anyone else confirm this? Personally I've tried it and absolutely hate it for regular play, my Xbone controller w/ PC adapter feels waaay nicer.
But I also hated motion controls on the WiiU so maybe I'm just crazy.

Not employees, but "journalists" with "inside, trusty sources" that spouted "what they have heard" on twitter, possibly to signal boost their patreons and get a bigger payout.

They got some information right, like the Switch's specs but were completely wrong in the games department, so their reputation is shady as fuck as it stands

Personally I like to think that they actually did have contact with inside sources from Nintendo, but they trolled them into having completely wrong info to smear their reputations
