When the opening cinematic for ARR was showed off, we saw the stand-ins for our 1.0 characters get warped five years into the future, upon which they whistled and somehow their chocobos(that were't sent to the future) showed up right on the spot and carried them to a short cliff. I'm gonna assume you are level 60.
First off do party finder raids for bahamut, they should be fairly easy now and have enough mechanics to make them interesting.
Afterwards if you have time start working on savage alexander through party finder. Pretty much get as much expiernce as you can before stormblood.

Once stormblood hits, get to level 70 and start getting the best gear you can possibly get. Once you get a really decent gear set and after you've cleard all the content, start looking into raiding. As a tank you more than anyone else needs to look at guides. So read up on each fight before hand. Then look for groups or join a free company that is looking for tanks in a static. As a tank you can make your own PF group and set it to the raid that you wish to do.
TL;DR Get as much expiernce but doing older raids and then gear up once expansion hits

The guy leveling up from fighting and getting harder was pretty cool though. That said FSH itself is really fucking tedious and boring because of how RNG it is. It's just RNG on top of RNG on top of RNG. Collectibles for FSH are pure cancer too. Increase timer doesn't make it even with the other two because you have to spend 10 minutes trying to get whatever it is you want as oppose to MIN or BTN where you can 100% get what you want whenever it's up. A. They release casual versions of the raids at the same time which are almost identical to the savage versions, meaning there's normally no unique assets/music/bosses to see for all your effort
B. The fights are an enormous gear-gated timesink which are frustrating only because they trickle out the gear required to clear them, and it's an environment where 1 idiot can wipe your party repeatedly (and this game is 90% idiots), and
C. The gear you earn by torturing yourself (ostensibly the only reward for raiding due to the aforementioned) are dyable pallete-swaps of the casual version drops, which are simply handed to casual players anyway a year down the track in the form of craftable versions.

Fuck raiding. Don't waste your time. Spend that 12 hours a week playing other (better) games.

Making Inner Beast and Fell Cleave (and SC/Deci and Defiance/Deliverance) one button instead of two is merging skills, removing Foresight is deleting an underused skill.

They're not trying to make sure SB has the same number of "skills" as HW. They're trying ot make sure SB has the same number of keys bound to your hotbar. Merging the three pairs of skills frees up room for three new keybinds, deleting Foresight makes room for a fourth. The fifth could be a trait, or pre-merged onto an existing skill, or they could find one more underused skill to delete, or whatever.

What they're not going to do is cut out 2/3 of WAR's combos and fit the remaining one into one button that automatically cycles through 1-2-3, and delete all their defensive cooldowns to replace them all with a single "die a little less" button.

Well you're in luck there. They've already said that Rampart is being made a common skill for all tanks. That's pretty much a straight upgrade over Foresight for WAR (and is a slight nerf to DRK and PLD since they go from having Rampart/Shadowskin and Foresight to just having Rampart/Shadowskin).

I'm hoping they give all the melee DPS a trait that always activates positionals when soloing. MNK is a sad panda when you have to not only go into a fight without GL3 since overworld trash dies too quick to build it up, but also face the target head on and lose all those bonuses. For the sake of flavor, I'm also hoping SAM's positionals are from the front, and they get Third Eye as an automatic auto-recharging buff that drastically reduces or zeros the damage of a single AoE when they're in front of the mob.

Point B - You can only gain 450 tomestones a week with which to buy welfare gear, which you're dependent upon to survive HP-checks and boss enrages during progression unless you're obscenely rich and can afford day-1 crafted gear/pots and (while Creator was less bad for these sorts of checks) it's undeniable that instant-wipe mechanics still exist and that a single idiot can fuck you over (eg. limit cut) with non-instant-wipe mechanics if they clip a healer, and
Point C - Alexandrian gear is a dyable pallete-swap of Proto Alex gear with some bits glued on, that will no-doubt be distributed to casuals via the deep dungeon

And if they DON'T give the savage versions to casuals I will chuck a bitch fit because they took my hard-earned Allagan gear to the riff-raff, and that's not fucking fair

If they do paladins/gladiators will no longer be able to tank at all since you can steal aggro from them if you have high enough dps if they just use a basic combo set without flash. It also means they'd potential have 0 AOE aggro tool.

If they just remove provoke from gladiator and make it a cross role skill depending on how those work gladiators ONCE AGAIN lose another essential tanking tole.

AST is fun but it's beholden to RNG. You got a 6-8~ chance of getting an AoE balance from the get go. You got a 30% chance to get AoE on your first draw, 40% on redraw. You have a 16% to get balance on your first draw, 20% on your redraw. This is important because AoE balance is the most important thing in raids and what you should usually be fishing for. In dungeons it's different but in both cases you should NEVER burn a balance for royal road.


That said I got both SCH and AST and found AST to be more fun but it being easier to heal on SCH. AST has been over-buffed so not sure if they're going to do something about that. If you don't like pets and want a guaranteed spot in raids go AST. I like SCH over WHM but some like WHM over SCH.

If you're worried about your ping, go to the resource monitor with XIV running in the background. You can get to it by going finding it manually, typing "resmon" in the run command in the start menu, or use Windows Key + R then typing in "resmon".

Look at the network tab on the top, click on it, and check the box next to the XIV client. At the bottom, under TCP connections, you can see your ping with the client.

Tracert and ping under the command prompt can tell you one side, but the resource monitor can tell the other.

If your ping is, for some reason, unacceptable to you, you got VPNs as an option.

Avoid WTFast. It's a scheme in terms of pricing. Consider mudfish VPN which is only $5 for 30GB of "reserved" bandwidth, and since XIV deals data in small kilobytes, 30GB can last you, easily, a year.

Another good source is pingzapper which made several UI upgrades and is pretty much "click click done". At $30 for a year, and the ability to pick where you want your VPN to be, it's a solid choice. Plus you can get a free trial. Also as a side note my ping went from 82 in XIV down to 38 using pingzapper which I was kinda nice.

The ping you see in the game is the ping that travels between the VPN server and the game only.

The real ping is higher because it still has to travel from your computer, to the VPN and then to the game server.

People use VPN to improve routing.
Rather than letting a bunch of various high tier ISP throw your traffic however they see fit you pipe it through one company's network so that it reaches the destination in the best way possible.

Resmon will normally only show you the connection to the entry server for the VPN under this scenario so you can't trust resmon fully (as it can't tell what's the additional ping between the VPN and the game server).

Quality private VPNs help reduce routing issues. That's their entire purpose.

Can anyone explain why my ping hops all the way down to Los Angeles when I run a tracert to the server lobby when I live in fucking Sacramento no more than 7 miles from the server? I should be getting <10ms ping but because of the hops I return with ~40ms. I have Comcast btw.

In my case I live in Brisbane Australia, and I checked the path I jump to USA by. I get fed from Sydney to San Jose. My vpn service only lets me tunnel to Los Angeles, which imo seems too far to help me connect to Sacramento.

So I figure, should I just tunnel to sydney? Or is it fucking pointless in my case and I can trash the vpn?
