I can understand the stigma against healers since you aren't directly involved with killing shit, but a tank is the most "heroic" and "cool" role from an aesthetic standpoint. Leading the party, taking risks in being the target of the mob, being highly valuable to party success relative to other roles (a DPS going afk or not pulling their weight won't usually hurt as hard as a tank being bad).
