Western video games include gay characters the same way western movies have to include a black character even if it doesn't make any sense but just causes your eyes to roll. This is an obvious and common thing they do in the west, there is nothing biased about agreeing on that.

In Japanese medium they never really did such things (maybe because homophobia and skin color hating isn't a big issue thing there). So when you actually see gay or trans characters its obvious to assume that they have these traits to add to the character. (Like Emil from Nier, his him being gay fit perfectly into the setting and really just made hima abit more complex character).
