When people say scripted events they typically mean the not-cutscenes that lock you into rooms while NPCs say exposition at you.
>>
>>376392778
No, they mean cinematic sequences and QTEs

>>
>>376392081
Scripted events are fundamental for most good game layouts, but the selection of games to prove the point is poor. That said, most games without scripted events are terrible, and the point is correct.
>>
>>376392081
Is quentin back omg
>>
>>376393584
Games made out of scripted events are just as bad.
>>
Minecraft's AI and the way crafting works is scripted to a certain extent along with a bunch of other things in the game. Scripts are necessary for a game to function at all.
>>
>>376393726
They're not necessarily bad, but they're also not technically games anymore.
>>
>>376392748
Hopefully never.,
>>
When people shit on scripted events they are usually referring to stuff like Half Life 2 where the events are just unskippable cutscenes that the player has no involvement in.

>>
>>376392081
Wait what. Literally every thing in a game is a scripted event by that definition.

When most people use the term, they mean when a game forces stuff on a player, without giving them any control of the situation.
Not like a cutscene where it just shows stuff happening, but a scripted event can take away health, items, and the player can do nothing about it.
>>
>>376394361
Squad based turn based tactics and 4x games are better, though with less depth I guess. Roguelikes have the same problem as all those open world procedurally generated survival indie games, though it's easier to add things to do because of the nature of the games. They're still good though.
>>
>posting Quentin, even ironically
Neck yourself.
>>
>>376394476
name a single good "tactics" game. lemme guess, xcom? boy I sure love waiting 10 minutes per cycle to watch all of those pointless animations and losing missions because I missed a point-blank shot with my rifle.

>Roguelikes have the same problem as all those open world procedurally generated survival indie games
Can you elaborate? What roguelikes have you played before that you're comparing them to "survival indie games"?
>>
reminder that segments where you are doing nothing but walking somewhere while a character spouts exposition at you are cutscenes
>>
>>376394476
>4x games are better than roguelikes
Do you also think that Civilization V is a "strategy game"? Hehe.
>>
>>376394232
can you give me a list of some other mediocre games I could play with tight character drama, compelling characters and subtlety like the last of us anon? I must have missed all those games somehow
>>
>>376394652
X-COM (originals, not new ones), Silent Storm, and JA2 mostly. It's a shame there aren't more good ones.

I've played DCSS and Cataclysm. In both games the world is procedurally generated and you're dropped into it to survive. I guess this isn't really the case in DCSS since there's a goal to get deeper into the dungeon, but in Cataclysm it's just go around, survive, and kill zombies as far as I'm aware. There may be more modes I haven't played. Even in DCSS though it's progressing through a large amount of procedurally generated floors of the dungeon collecting items/weapons and fighting monsters. They work out better however because there's a lot more things you can do in them though compared to the average indie survival game. Especially in Cataclysm.

>>376394832
>nu-XCOM is the only turn based tactics game
>Civ is the only 4x game
I guess you guys only do play roguelikes if you don't know any other games in these genres. Like I said above, turn based tactics is sadly kind of barren but there's a shitload of 4x games that range from fairly simple like Civ to pretty in depth like Aurora.

Got a question. I see that you can either buy it on Steam/GoG or it's for free on the dev's site. I don't see anything about the expansions on the dev's site though, do you have to actually buy those while the base game is free?
>>
>>376395792
hmm, I don't think that's an accutate portrayal of naughty dog games either, typically naughty dog games are broken up into 6 kinds of gameplay

>cutscene
>walking and dialogue
>combat
>exploration
>puzzle
>setpiece

the last of us is about a 14-18 hour game and it has somewhere between 3-4 hours of cutscenes (let's just round up to 4 and the entire game down to 14 to be generous). so now we're left with 10 hours. let's say there's about 2 hours of walking and dialogue although I think there's actually far less than that. so now we have 8 hours which is more than half of the game to fill in with combat, exploration puzzles and set-pieces. combat and exploration I would say takes up the bulk of this due to the fact that puzzles and set-pieces are usually very short, so let's say there's an hour of puzzles and set-pieces which cannot also be considered combat (such as when joel was hanging upside-down in bill's town). so for a 14 hour game, and that's a very conservative estimate, half of it consists of combat and exploration

the thing is that even outside of the combat and exploration which is fairly complicated insomuch as it involves balancing stealth, resources, level design, enemy type, accuracy, etc., the last of us also requires you to intelligently navigate environments to reach your goal, respond to hazards, etc., so on the whole there really isn't much "holding the trick forward and pressing a button every couple of minutes" in the game

I just played DOOM and Bulletstorm. Bulletstorm has this awesome giant monster, but its not an actual enemy type the player interacts with. Its a roller coaster ride with gameplay akin to light gun arcade shooters. Then in DOOM each enemy has different game mechanics and behaviors the player has to learn and interact with. Thats what people mean when they dont like scripted events. I want to actually feel like im fighting the monster.

>>
>>376396915
no, I said the combat is complicated insomuch as it requires all that. pretty much all 3d games require you to intelligently navigate environments to reach your goal and respond to hazards though, so the last of us isn't unique in this respect, but that's definitely not something you have to do in movies or whatever
>>
>>376394915
I only know of good games with all of those. I don't know what tight character drama, compelling characters, or subtlety has to do with a shitty ripoff of Children of Men though.

Why are fake Quentin comics so bad?
>>
>>376397026
in what ways is the character drama critically flawed in the last of us to make it "shity"?
>>
>>376396462
I hate all of that and the fact that anyone would understand the game so well and still like it. Gameplay should be strong enough to carry any game, the moment it starts relying on non gameplay because the gameplay is too shallow to carry the experience is when it becomes a bad game. Non of those elements are strong enough to carry the experience so the developers clusterfuck them together to pad out length. I want to sit down and enjoy a video game, not a series of half assed shit designed to distract me from how shit each individual piece is.

Yeah, he started a fight with Elfoxoloco and lost badly. Elfoxo got an episode of TCR removed, got ghost.market shut down, reported him to the FTC & FCC, and somehow managed to get Ghost's real dox (which was what finally sent Ghost running so it may actually be legit) and reported EVERYTHING to his police department, who is now likely going to come down on Ghost for inciting violence, doxxing people, and doing drugs on air.

Proper use of scripted events is fine.

Overuse, as in The Last of Us and Call of Duty make a game shit.

The original Far Cry had a good balance, and all the games since then have been chasing and mostly failing to get that balance. There are times you spend freely roaming the map, taking out energy camps, and other times where combat is much more scripted. All within the same level.
