For me, it's Persona 3. The best jrpg game. I even ask for persona fusion exp and the Velvet Room staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.

One time I asked for Trumpeter and they gave me Tetrakarn. I said, "Wow, Tetrakarn!" and the nice friendly Velvet Room worker laughed and said, "I'm going to call you Jamal-kun!".

Now the staff greets me with "hey it's Jamal-kun!" and ALWAYS give me exp burst. It's such a fun and cool atmosphere at my local Velvet Room, I go there at least 3 times a week for persona fusions, 1-2 times for registering them to my compendium, and maybe once for advanced fusions if I want some power but want to maximize my personas efficiency, and can match my daily Tartarus exploring needs.

I even fuse my personas for Elizabeth's side quests, she's best girl. What a great game!

Yea, I certainly enjoyed the extended feel of the hobo stage in Zaton and I like how Jupiter was lain out and the various areas in it but I wanted to feel like I was surviving in Pripyat and for being all kitted out they hardly send anything at you. I don't know if I had shit spawns or what but I found hardly anything just wandering around. I don't even remember any Monolith. Then the lead up to the helicopter is pretty anti climactic except the last plaza then it just kind of ends. I enjoyed everything else about it though.

The Humor and silliness of it is still around though.
Controls are a hit and miss for me really.

I don't think it went bonkers so much as it didn't really explain the interesting parts (time 'kompression', the fact that Balamb is run by a strange looking troll that lives in the basement, the relationship between Squall and Laguna etc.), and instead focused on things like GF memory loss, and demonic possession from the future.

Actually now I think about it all of the concepts in FF8 were interesting, they just weren't executed well.

I think there are a lot of good games out today, but to be my favorite or "best ever" there needs to be a certain element of timelessness. Some mechanic or story which seems fresh today might be terribly dated in 5 or 10 years, so I want to limit my list to games that are at least 5 years old but still perfectly playable today. That means some games like Deus Ex or Morrowind don't make the cut for me, simply because they're pretty damn clunky to try and play today.

I've still not finished 5 so I can't really place it above 4 yet despite feeling that it does a lot of things better than its predecessor.

As much as I enjoy 3 it's just a personal preference that I prefer 4, I found the setting and story more engrossing and found that progressing through dungeons was much more rewarding to do than slogging through Tartarus. Also, I know it's addressed in the PSP version but man after having direct commands in 4 it makes 3 hard to go back to.

I actually preferred the persona 3 command systrm added some difficulty and made it faster/more streamlined. I remember soloing a boss that spammed marin karin cause it's the only way.
It's one of those things you don't realize you actually wanted till it's gone. Felt the same way when i finally got to restart boss fights when i died. Ruined all the stakes and what have you.

Can't fault you for haitng the ending though and I didn't even know p5 had dlc lol don't see a screen for it in game.

If your teammates had better AI and maybe some more unique abilities besides just elemental attacks and buffs, I could see that. The problem is they're all just different flavors of the main character, so it feels very unnatural to not be controlling them, and when you die you're left wondering if maybe you would have survived if you could control them directly, which also isn't a very fun feeling.

Not him but i found the story in mgs2 much weaker. Kojima was trying to be the twist guy. switching the meaning of S3 multiple times as a big OMG and silly illumanati stuff out of nowhere. Its still a good game and some of the codec stuff and game over screen were memorable as hell.

Whereas mgs3 the twists actually fit well and made me go wow. Story was much better showing what set big boss on his path of disenfranchisement and actually putting him in a tough dilemna/spot.
Gameplay also was the perfect stealth game imo, i loved being stealthy as possible but still having the possibility to make a mad dash if caught, without it being easy enough to be a viable strategy. And the boss battles were way better.

Eh, the story of 2 is so wrapped up in Kojima's frustration with the series though. It doesn't seem timeless to me, but rather trapped in time, such that if I wanted to show the game off to a normie friend, I'd first need to fill them in on all these details about the world, its history, the development process, even some of the retcons from later games.

MGS3 doesn't really need any of that. Sure, you get a lot more from knowing about the story of Big Boss, Outer Heaven, The Patriots, etc., but you don't really need all of that to understand and enjoy the story. 50 years from now, some kid can find MGS3 in a bargain bin and he will probably still have a blast with it, and I'm not sure the same can be said of MGS2.

The story of MGS2 is very subtle actually. If you played it back then after MGS 1 it was truly a spectacle imo. The meaning behind S3 was not about Raiden but rather you as a player and I loved the fuck you. Also the last dialogue Snake has with Raiden (the player) is very optimistic and that's also something I really enjoyed. 3 has a very good twist but the point of 2 is that it's not about the twist like 3 is and the message goes beyond the game.

No offence, but mgs2 is to kojima what Revolver is to Guy Ritchie.
Trying to go to deep/metaphorical and Pretentious and failing miserably. The whole ending is just a mess not at all in tone with the series.

That being said. One thing i love about mgs, is every game except the psp trash and 3 give the vibe that's totally indicative of the era, whike being the best of the style. Mgs is totally the pinnacle of a late 90s period of gamea focused around great boss battles, while mgs2 is that goofy awkward early ps2 feel with the not quite as good boss battles and overall goofyness, shit like the skateboarding minigame in the special edition and all the easter eggs. Mgs4 Is the pinnacle of the cinematic military shooter generation it was born into and 5 is a great spin on the openworld meme we have today.

What I took from MGS (PSX) was nuclear proliferation. I got to know about nuclear weapons and the issue of human rationalization through a PSX game? That was truly something special. What MGS2 adressed was a proliferation of memes and basically what we have now and what Huxley was afraid of. We are drowning in informational garbage and whoever gets the information out first wins, it doesn't even matter if it's true. MGS3 was "just" a fix to give players a sequel they really wanted without really addressing anything (or am I mistaken?). One way or another MGS1, 2 and 3 are all amazing pieces of art and I can't really place one above other in absolute terms.

Also MGSV is a bad game imo. There is no redeeming quality about it except the outstanding engine. Even the gameplay is bad. Controls are good however the integration falls flat in the empty world devoid of anything interesting.

MGS3 is about how we are formed by the time we are live in. How "scene" way above our control forces us to do certain things we wouldn't otherwise do.

Though, unlike MGS1 and 2, there was no positive message in the end. Naked Snake had to kill Boss, Eva had to betray her love. All John was left with was contempt for the scene he was in.

I think that Peace Walker and V weren't necessary at all. John was already in the position to become Big Boss we knew in MG1 and 2.

Except it's written by the George Lucas of video games, so the reasoning of John's fall isn't so much dumb as shit, but poorly presented in a nonsensical fashion. There's no positive message or message at all because it's a character story, and a really bad one at that, culminating in all of the awful shit in MGS4 that seeks to act like a sequel to 2 and 3.

I'm glad this series is dead. Let Kojimbo move on to his Crystal Skull.
