>dumbfuck redditor finds Starcraft Gold Master Source Code Disk
>returns it to Blizzard
>gets $250 credit in Blizzard store and a trip to Blizzcon
Well there you have it /v/, could be playing sourceports and mods for one of the best RTS of all time but now it looks like Reddit ruined that for you.
This hurts almost as much as the Xbox Dev Kit fiasco.

I don't see what's wrong, Guy finds source code, gives it back to the guys who made it, dude get's store credit and a free trip to Blizzcon, probably a special mention too during the con. That's not bad of a reward. Besides, it was the right thing to do rather than horde it.

Yes I'm serious, I don't care how good or bad Blizz is today, it's no excuse to just basically steal their source code because some of you don't like them.
>>
>>375983409
Add better support for mods, I guess.
Considering that Blizzard just released that remaster of it, I don't think it was that great of a find, surely would have been interesting for any software developers to look at though.

>>

>could be playing sourceports and mods
No you couldn't. This isn't like id tech open sourcing Quake, Blizz would DMCA+sue any stuff that crops up immediately. Remember Valve tricking that one guy into going to jail, and that was even back when Valve wasn't only about pure unadultered greed - so just imagine how modern Blizz would react. Anyone making source ports would go directly to jail.
>>
>>375983293
Nice response from someone who clearly has no idea how any of this works and just want's his revenge against a video game company for stupid reasons.
>>
>>375982993
>this literal golden ticket falls into his lap
he probably could have gotten more than $250 (and in real cash money, not store credit), but it definitely would have been no 'golden ticket', and if he'd tried to publicly auction it, or offer to sell it back to them, Blizzard probably would have brought legal action against him.

his best case would have been Blizzard deciding to pay up, and it wouldn't have been more than maybe $10k. a public auction probably wouldn't have gotten more than a few grand.
>>
>>375983476

Software companies go apeshit over people who steal code or do something with stolen code. Like I said, I'd look at how Valve reacted with the HL2 source leak, that is the closest real-life example. It's not comparable to someone making Overwatch porn or reverse-engineering WoW servers, stolen source code is on a different level entirely.

THIS!

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, the free trip says more than enough how worth it it was to give the code back. A free trip for this guy will mean

-Blizzard paying for the air fare/travel
-Blizzard paying for the guy's hotel he would be staying at
-Blizzard paying for his ticket into the con
-Dude getting a special mention during the con and even meeting some of Blizzard's staff most likely and stuff like that
-Maybe food, don't really know
-Overall having a fun time at one of the more expensive cons (that I know of) for entirely free.

Yeah I'd say that's worth it over the possibility of getting sued, surrendering because he would never be able to pay for the lawsuit, and giving the code back for peanuts/nothing.

>>
>>375982662

The guy wouldnt have gotten jack shit for selling it, and it would have been alot more risk and effort on his part.

Anyone who thinks some crazy Korean would buy it off him for a million dollars is fucking retarded.

Same thing with the Xbox devkit. People act like the kid would have gotten beacoup bucks for it, even though most emulator devs are broke as shit.
>>
>>375983409
>>375983539

If you have the source code of a game, you can literally port the game onto any console u want. among other things like unused game assets (cut content)

If you have the source code, you essentially copy+paste yourself into the developers shoes but you have 100% freedom. i'm not some modder geek or whatever, but it's pretty apparent to me that that a source code for starcraft 1 is a pretty big deal.

for example, last thread a guy was showing off his gears of war 3 running on ps3 - that was all thanks to Gears 3 source code being available.
>>
>>375982662

I don't think anyone in this thread has a decent enough grasp of software engineering to realize this isn't as worthwhile as they think it is

Nice for a novelty collection, yes, but it would pretty fucking easy to reverse engineer a 2 decade old game written in one of the most prevalent languages in object oriented computing (c++)

There just isn't any profit motive to do so.

Not sure if irony.

What could he have possibly done with the code that isn't illegal? Just hand it to someone else and leave them asking the same question? He'd just be painting a target over his head.

What he did was not only the right thing to do, but it was also the best thing to do. He gets free cred from Blizzard, that was the best possible outcome of this situation and he deserves the praise he is getting, you edgelord.
>>
>>375984067
Because Blizzard would know, and thus the guy would be in trouble. Besides, what the hell are you gonna do with the source code? make mods for a game nobody really plays anymore?
>>
>>375984518

Not impossible - improbable. Hire a bunch of Chinese, and they'd return you a source code by the end of the year. Problem is that hobbyists interested in these games don't have the manpower or money. CEMU is a recent outlier.
>>
>>375986195
theres many benefits to having access to source code of a game. in this example, unused missions/assets would be cool to starcraft fans. Emulation fans would be ecstatic because they'd be able to emulate the game on their mobile phone. Like, source code is a pretty big deal. for an average gamer it's really not a big deal, i get that. but for people that actually like this type of shit, it's a pretty big deal.

I'll spoonfeed you and every other fucking retard in this thread, but first we need to talk about compilation. When you write a program, you're writing source code, which is readable by humans but isn't more than just text to your computer. In order to run it, you have to use a compiler, which parses what you've written and turns it into machine code in the form of an executable. Compilation is a one-way process, and there is no way to return a compiled program back to its original source code.
Now, modifying an executable on its own without the source code is a tricky, time-consuming, and often extremely frustrating process. First off, since you can't un-compile a program (there are programs that try to do this before anyone says anything,) you have to deal with assembly language, which is more or less a 1:1 mapping to machine code. In assembly, the human-readable statements of high-level languages have been broken down into a long list of low-level instructions for the CPU, such as moving data between registers and memory and the like. Because a compiler strips away all identifying symbols in the process of turning the source code into machine code, these locations, which store variables, are unmarked, and you have no way of finding out what they do short of experimentation. When modifying assembly, you also can't add or delete any code because doing so would cause the rest of the instructions to shift, making the offsets used by them invalid.
This is where having the source code comes in. Because it hasn't passed through a compiler yet, the amount of ways it can be modified are near limitless. This includes adding completely new game logic and overhauls of the game's existing systems. While I don't give half a fuck about Starcraft, I'm sure there are many autists that do play it that would greatly benefit from a total rewrite of the game's terribly outdated netcode.

Well in this case he returned it to the alien wearing the skin of old Blizzard.
>>

apparently he was buying old blizzard games on disc, then got sent this by accident.

from what i assume, most game dev's just go "ok game has been released lets move onto the next shit" and usually sorta forget about past work assets. The most likely occurence is that, the team building starcraft 1 all left at some point but didn't take the Blizzard property (source code etc) witht hem. then when the new team comes through they are like "whats all this shit? not mine, not my problem, not my job." and just throw it out, or place it somewhere in storage for 10+years till a janitor is like "hey cool whats this?"

to me, it's like, when they made these games they weren't thinking of the future like "oh keep these files on hand we're gonna remaster the game in 10 years"

Where they're really dropped the ball is the space stage. This is after all where the meat of the game, time-wise, resides.
Basically playing a ( very shallow ) grand strategy game without an option to have the interface of a grand strategy game. And having the attacks not scale, unbearable, beyond a certain size the sound warning of pirate attacks is all you can hear.

Having a way to abandon current race and takeover an existing not space-age one would have been very nice too, especially when you'd have your old well-developped species to fight against.

Given the fact that they've released Starcraft and Brood War for free I believe that sets a legal precedence that would essentially rule that they're surrendering that specific IP as a non-profit venture and as such could not take any fiscal losses as a product of such a leak. Of course you'd have to have a hell of an attorney to be able to spin it like that.

The only thing that is sad is that there would be no source port. Mods would be all shit tier, like all the D1 and D2 mods.

There's already a bunch of open sourced rts engines, at least one of which directly clones starcraft, that people can learn from. Having another example written in outdated C++ is not going to be of any value as a learning tool. The same goes for modding.

I don't know what you could learn from a 2D 90's RTS game when the genre is dying and small studios can put out full 3D games that probably have more complicated game logic than a sprite based game that has no physics engine.
It takes seconds on Steam to find pages of games by developers I've never heard before that all have the same basic structure needed for an RTS.
Is Starcraft important because of the code it ran on or because of the competitive scene that surrounded it and the balance of the game?
>>
>>375994895

And then what? You make a mod for it, you can't post it anywhere because it was made with leaked code. Nobody's going to host your poisoned shit.

>>375985641
Dev tools for one, you'd have full access to the engine itself and could retrofit certain features onto it and make a wholly different game, or just TC mods. It's like the difference between gmod at the start which was a beam gun and a welder and what it is now. Literally infinite capability but under the familiar visage of the original game. Not to mention it gives indie developers a strong reference for enginebuilding, which is by no means a bad thing. Instead we get to look at Blizzard giving some dude some shitty Razer trash branded with Barrierwatch cuckery and a trip to Blizzcon, which somehow he appreciates.
>>
>>375995139

That's besides the point, even if you spread it all over the place you wouldn't be able to use any legitimate means to host or collaborate on any projects based on it. Are you familiar with the vast network of torrents? Or any of the many poorly monitored sites that host countless terabytes of illegal data and redistribute it on a second by second basis? There are literally countless ways to distribute the fruits of this product, and litigation thereafter becomes increasingly difficult due to the number of participants.

And let's not feign like this is some act of a saint, we're talking about a game developer that is owned by a monolithic, and infallible publisher and their twenty year old game coded by employees that most likely don't even work at Blizzard anymore. Even the most profound effect this could've had on Blizzard/Activision is absolutely and totally negligible. There is no profit loss and frankly with SC/BW releasing for free it's hardly something they'd have a battle in court for in the first place.

What in the fuck is that .gif?

>>375995820
who is your waifu?
>>
>>375995728
Yes I do, if you did you'd know how worthless the code would be out there, especially after blizzard got a whiff of it.
>>375995754
>Are you familiar with the vast network of torrents?
And then what? People get the code, start working on projects in small groups and still won't be able to get the word out about it, or collaboration from posting their own code. They can't host anything done with it anywhere, or get help when they get stuck with something. It's dead in the water at that point and everyone moves on and abandons it.

Now stop trying to rile the children up, because this entire ordeal doesn't affect me or you in any significant way.

literally a few dozen people would have given a shit about what could have came from this

Now, explain very carefully how this affects you or your enjoyment or starcraft in any way. Explain in detail how this situation magically deletes your Starcraft CDs.
Go on.

You know also wouldn't affect me? If someone destroyed every single piece of art in every museum.
That also wouldn't change how I enjoy starcraft.

I really don't see the problem that you have with this. Most modding efforts are "grassroots" anyways, so to speak, and have some sort of forum / community following. I'm not claiming that someone's going to start a company or something based off the source code, but it could be really useful, and I don't see the problems that you're imagining. What are these communication problems that you believe everyone will have? Where is this coming from?

>>375996096
I think from this thread alone you can tell a lot more people cared.

If you need proof reddit has infused itself on this site for the past several years, it's this thread. Reddit crossposters everywhere.

Fuck that xbox redditfag, and fuck this idiot as well

Built through sites like nexus and moddb and other forums, none of which would touch anything made with this with a 10 foot pole. Try to keep on subject, we're not discussing the merits of collaboration here.

I'm glad you're conceding, there was nothing to be gained from this disk in the wild. You merely wanted it to be a personal affront against you.

Sure buddy you have 750.000 to spend
>>
>>375996650
That's an entirely different matter and that really was worth getting upset over, mostly because the xbox hardware is largely undocumented. Starcrat's source code isn't some kind of holy grail, very little could be gained from it. If blizzard released it legally through some free license, then people would have the means to work on it and create stuff and distribute it (this is never going to happen because people keep buying the game and playing online).
As leaked as it would have been, it would amount to cancer and not much else.
>>
>>375996502
Do you feel a compulsive desire to defend redditors? You're honestly just making up excuses for why this guy isn't a fuckup when it's plainly obvious that he is.

>>375996672
>we're not discussing the merits of collaboration here
But what you're suggesting is that any sort of modding efforts will never get off the ground, and I'm saying that that just isn't true. Communities would come together around this shit, and the people who really cared would work hard. You seem to be of the opinion that everyone interested will just be left alone in the cold with no way to communicate with anyone else or get help.
>>
>>375996796
It doesn't matter, you've already strayed off topic and are just trying to get further replies. Go play videogames, I'm not your babysitter.

>>375996907
>But what you're suggesting is that any sort of modding efforts will never get off the ground, and I'm saying that that just isn't true.

Name three big projects stemming from leaked stolen source code, ever. They don't even have to be games.

I know it's fun to discuss this, but there's a lot of misinformation and misplaced outrage regarding this. If you people want to rage at something, do it at the idiot who turned an xbox dev kit into a syk gayman rig.
