My primary issues with Deus Ex are that the gunplay isn’t good, enemies aren’t interesting, the stealth isn’t good, the hacking/lockpicking are one dimensional, there isn’t a significant platforming/area traversal element. Dialogue basically never constitutes a good gameplay challenge, and Deus Ex isn’t an exception there.
On the level of simply the game living up to what it is,the game doesn’t really care if you go lethal or nonlethal in any of the missions (after the third one it stops tracking the difference completely). The overall story arc is completely linear, you always have to betray unatco, you always get captured by gunther, you always break out of unatco, go to hong kong, infiltrate versalife, etc, etc. There are tons of invincible NPCs in many of the levels, especially the early ones. You’re required to kill multiple NPCs to proceed (even if there are clever workarounds for all but one of them).
I went into Deus Ex thinking, “Wow, I can do anything.” After successive playthroughs and learning more about the game, I realized, “Wow, I can’t do anything.” My opinion on the game changed over time as my opinions about what made a good game or not became more refined. Deus Ex isn’t deep. There’s a lot going on, but none of it is interconnected, meaningful, or challenging. Deus Ex is just bad.

Blue Burst is Phantasy Star Online Episode 1, 2, and 4. It's just the final, most complete release of PSO. PSO2 will literally never ever come stateside, I've been waiting years. I played DL3 for the first time recently and I've never ever felt as gimped in a platformer as I did in that game, especially compared to superstar. I was desperately trying to avoid all enemies since my every power was slow, committal, had small attack range, and only one way to attackOverall it was pretty great and I 100%'d it, including boss rush and jump rope.

Have you played Bastion? It's made by the same people. It has a LOT of the same conventions but is still really different, new combat system, among other things. I enjoyed both a lot, Transistor beats Bastion though
If not, it's a isometric action/strategy game that has super customizable combat for your character. You have attacks, each one of those attacks has two modifier slots, and then you have 4 passive slots. The attacks you have to select from (its a lot and you get duplicates) go into all 3 types of slots and do different things in all 3. So if you have a tame enemy attack, and attach it to a different move, that move will have a chance to temporarily turn the enemy onto your team. If your put it into the passive slot these cells that drop off of dead enemy that you have to collect will spawn a small friendly ally when you do. Attacks are plentiful
The combat is different than Bastions. The MC has the ability to pause the world and plan out a string of attack with the 4 moves you have. You can walk and use each move as much as you want, but it fills up a meter at the top of the screen, once thats filled up you can do anything else. But you can rewind and try as many combinations of moves to get the most damage for your buck as you want. Once you start time, the MC runs around and quickly does all of those attacks (this sounds overpowered but it's surprisingly balances out, not all combos are succesful, if enemies are already planning on moving you might be fucked, etc.) After that you have to wait for your ability to recharge, during that time you can use (if memory serves me correctly) specific moves like dodge, or a move with dodge attached to it. Enemies can FUCK you up during this time, so using the end of planning to give you an escape is not a bad idea.
It does run on the shorter side at about 6-8 hours for the main game iirc, with side challenges and a GOOD new game+ adding late game enemies all over

I do, I've been into it (playing it on and off) since it came out. I admit that it wasn't that great to begin with, but Blizzard have been incrementally improving it and I think it's a great game at this point.
It's a very specific kind of game that not everyone can enjoy, mainly because of how fast and difficult it is.

It seemed to have held the suspension of disbelief long enough for you to complete several successive playthroughs though.
Deus Ex was a great game, but it has aged poorly. I would still call it a good game though, despite your "refined tastes".

Other games being good doesn't invalidate this game being good. I really liked the idea and execution of the hybrid between old CRPG and real time, I fucking loved it once they refined it in Awakening. The plot is pretty basic but it's a lot of fun, Darkspawn were fun monsters, the Archdemon was properly portrayed as insurmountable in the course of the game, Loghain threads on /v/ still occur occasionally, the companion casts in both Origins and Awakening are amazing excluding one each (Origins Oghren and Savannah or whatever the fuck the elf was called).
The main games quests were great except for the deep roads, all of them gave you a lot of options too. Redcliffe lets you take over a bar and send the bar owner to his death against the undead, send the whole town to its undeath, kill a child, go into the fade with 4 different characters potentially by either killing a women or spending a bunch of mana from the circle. The sidequest chains mostly have dialogue and options for the player, side dungeons like the blood mage hideout exist, the addon side dungeons are packaged into every version of the game now, side bosses exist all over, etc.
Awakening's Mystery plot is really cool and a nice followup to Origins being an epic quest. The change to the companion approval system and bunch of other gameplay systems was rad and made the game play even better (there's a mod to bring the gameplay changes from Awakening to Origins, I highly reccomend it with a difficulty mod). The way all the sidequests played into the main game or epilogue was nice. The quests were again fun as hell, with the first half of the woods/silverite mine arc lagging behind only. It removes a lot of the flaws of Origins but the biggest ones for me was less recycled areas and enemy fights without much going on int them.
It's a fun game in a series with an unfortunate reputation
