Are you ready for every new Windows system sold to block Steam unless you pay them $50?
I guess now we'll see if this really is them committing suicide or if they'll succeed in killing Steam, Origin, and the other stores.
Seems like most OEMs and developers are just going to bend over and accept the new restrictions.

Time to switch to Linux? Gaming on Linux is actually in pretty good shape these days.

t. someone who dualboots Linux
>>
>>375760819
How long have you been doing that?

I remember when I could count the number of native Linux games on one hand and they were all ten years old.
Seriously, at one point I owned every Linux native game.
Plus back then our driver situation was basically Nvidia or nothing, where Nvidia's driver was mainly an afterthought because they needed into the Workstation market.

Now we have open source drivers for AMD hardware that are better than what AMD themselves could deliver, and faster in most games as well of which there are thousands of native titles including both new AAA games and older games I never thought we'd ever see on Linux.
>>
Man, dual booting, having to make my own OS... too much work just to use a computer. In the end Microsoft will defeat me whenever my windows 7 stops working.

Guess that depends on your definition of 'good'.
I don't consider the lack of games from shitty companies like Zenimax, or EA to be a problem.

All that really needs to happen is for more games to come out of the companies who have been letting their games get ported like SquareEnix or Sega, but that's probably not going to happen if people keep using Windows.
>>
>>375761995
Won't be an option on 10 S, and just watch it won't be long till 10 S is the only thing you'll be able to get in a prebuilt.

Also now that Microsoft has what is probably a legit 'free' version, do you think that won't be accompanied by a crackdown on piracy?
>>

I guess pirates will have to crack the Windows first.
>>
>>375762362
>it won't be long till 10 S is the only thing you'll be able to get in a prebuilt
You are easily the most retarded person I have ever seen on 4chan and that is not an exaggeration. 10 S is clearly going to be a significantly cheaper version of Windows so that OEMs can sell $99 computers to old-ladies and schools, since the only thing stopping that right now is the fact a Windows license is $100.

>While Microsoft is positioning Windows 10 S first and foremost as a product for the education sector, it says that it does not view the version as an exclusively low-end version of Windows and expects that it will also be available on systems with mainstream consumer availability.

Just like when Windows shills were denying this would ever happen despite Microsoft executive's statements that it would, 'mainstream consumer availability' here should be read as "Will be on every new Windows machine"

By putting it on their new $1000 laptop they're basically telling OEMs "This is how you build a Windows machine now"
>>

>>
>>375763608
>you fuckers wish they were stupid enough to do this
This isn't a hypothetical anymore. 10 S is real, they've done it. There's no more room for denial. The only question now is how well they're able to force it on the public.

>damage countless businesses in the process
Remember when Microsoft dropped DOS support? Businesses didn't sue Microsoft out of existence, they updated their stuff or switched to FreeDOS or Linux.
Same thing will happen with this.

You think the industry will fight back? Maybe a few companies like Valve, but everyone else is just going to bend over and accept it. They've invested too much in the Microsoft ecosystem, if they wanted other options they would have needed to invest in other platforms years ago.

>>375763375
>>375763490
From what I can tell this is one of those artsy-types of laptops. Other companies (Vaio is the only one I can think of off of the top of my head, but I know there's more than that because I just did a hefty search to replace my old laptop) do the same thing, release a good-looking, thin laptop with specs that ain't worth shit but still release it for an exorbitant price because it's targeted at art students that normally buy Apple and want design over function.
>>
>>375763652
>unless they're releasing some bitch tier version like the Surface RT again

This is exactly what they're doing. Standard Microsoft operating procedure. If at first you don't succeed, force it even harder.

>>
>>375764130
This is definitely a halo product, but its also example hardware for OEMs to show them what Microsoft wants from them as their partners.

The concern is that in two years when 7 is EOL that a bunch of people will replace their systems with new ones that won't run anything except what they can get from the Windows Store.
That's basically the death for every third party store because the majority of people aren't going to pay $50 to install a store.

Valve saw this coming a few years ago, realized it would knock them from the 200+ million they were on pace to hit down to maybe 10 million. That's why they've been spending tons of money on GNU/Linux despite them only have 1.5 or so million Linux users.

Right, Valve could sue but they'd be losing revenue every year, they'd have to hollow the company out till there were only lawyers left and even if they won there'd be nothing left for them.
Then because they were a business with no plan to make money other than lawsuits they'd turn into another IP troll going after the new successful businesses that had grown up in the intervening years.

Microsoft has used this tactic for years now, even going so far to turn some of those companies into sock puppets to use directly against their enemies.

No, you won't have one-stop shops and may have to go to an individual company's website, but it'll be there for you because if there's a way a company doesn't have to pay a commission, they won't. Either way, you should be dual booting into Windows when you want to play vidya that doesn't have a Linux port anyways and everything else is done on Linux. Nothing will change for these users. Steam will just be a free App in the store, like every other normie Applications.

I use UWP daily. Not only that, but if the windows store starts to dictate content policies (no gore, no "offensive content") it would effectively be dictated for all users because developers won't make two versions for the same OS.

False. A cold UEFI boot won't be that fast. It's no faster than a SSD in that case. You're referring to a hibernated boot, which is the default from Win8+

Do a restart and you'll see the real boot time.
>>
>>375769890
There is a huge difference between an SSD on bios and mbr and an SSD on gpt and uefi
>>
>>375769640

the problem is the slippery slope that MS creates. They introduce an "optional feature" and then they remove the ability to stop it or alter it. Look at the hoops we gotta jump through just to disable automatic updates. Sure, any savvy person can do it with but a simple edit to the registry, but imagine their thought process and how they feel like they can continue pushing and pushing, until you're not allowed to touch the registry or services. I wouldn't be surprised if, by the end of the year, Windows was more walled off than a daycare.

The fact that if you want to install using GPT you have to unplug every single disk aside from the one you want to install to or it will fail?

The fact that, unless your BIOS manufacturer added in a custom boot keystroke option (which all of the high end ones do), you can be stuck in a boot loop since the only way to boot to the BIOS is from inside of Windows, and if you get into said boot you have to unplug the drive to get to the BIOS?

W10 USERS ARE STUPID

Don't you realize that in the future every single company is going to have in their hands your entire privacy on paper? They will employ people depending on what they do in their free time.

That's the reason why you people should care about your privacy

Why? Macs are even worse. They also have a store that's essentially forced on the majority of users. Plus more relevant for gaming they also restrict game developers to outdated graphics APIs, supporting only OpenGL 4.1 (no AZDO, no SPIR-V, no Compute Shaders), and their own Metal (Mobile first, no modern features)

Plus Apple doesn't have any current systems that can take a modern discrete GPU.

Hello 1984. Why do people never get the point? The entire scam, throughout time, is to get people not to care about their privacy, then they slowly change what's illegal and legal. Things once perfectly legal are now illegal, and maybe you've done those things, and changing your ways won't matter, because they have the last 20 years of your history doing the things that are now illegal. This is a never ending spiral, where ever more things are cracked down upon, ever more minuscule, ever more harmless things, taking control of every little aspect of your life until everything you've done is illegal and the only way to not end up in jail is to perfectly tow the line now matter how horrendous the line becomes.

I had a lot of professors with different backgrounds and preferences to OS. But if they all knew we had the same OS and were installing the same programs they could recognize common issues and know how to solve them.

They also were teaching us on the assumption that we would be in the workforce using industry standards, which would be windows.

It also saves them having to upload multiple versions of their code examples for different OS's.

Currently? No. So either OP is lying about some shit or this is something entirely new that we can reject. You cannot just have an update that does that to every windows owner, because that isn't what they purchased. OP is intentionally vague
>>
>>375773456

It's a good point, and it's been touched on before. ISPs, your OS maker, they can lie. Typically they won't have a reason to, but the reality that they can lie in or against your favor is a very real issue. It's easier than ever to fake a cyber crime, and from ISPs to OSs to various apps to just what Governments often do at a base, you are being watched.

You don't have to have done something illegal, but, if you piss off the wrong person, or serve as a good example? Perhaps you have a good position to exploit? Perhaps you're a nobody and go unnoticed entirely, but you are doing something wrong, so there's no reason to act either way unless someone needs some numbers to show that they're acting, and you just got lumped in? The reality is the amount of crimes, not just cyber crimes, are so large that it can often be a bit of a lottery whether someone that's actually done something gets fingered, unless they've got someone's attention for some reason. And, of course, you could have done nothing at all, but still gotten someone's attention.

There's a lot to take a part. No system is perfect, so, no system actually gets all the bad guys/girls, but, alternatively, no system is pure, corruption always exists, so no system is free of innocents being fingered/exploited for one reason or another.

Your privacy being a non-issue, and multiple systems reporting you, just amplifies issues like these.

>>
>>375773773

Actually, there was a neat article a few years back. I don't know how accurate it was, but it was reporting cyber crime statistics. One of the issues is that many of these 'iffy' sites double as perfectly legitimate sites, or, 'iffy' sites of another sort that aren't illegal, but still act as a good cover. This isn't in regard to the guy you're quoting's crime, it's more general cyber crimes that use legitimate sites as a cover, so the article didn't touch on that specific crime, but, apparently it's not out of the realm of possibility. Though, if you stick to really well known sites, you're unlikely to run into such nonsense. It's more an issue old people or especially young people face, when nosing around the net for something they're looking for, not knowing where to get it, and stumble on this nice site that offers, I don't know, pottery supplies, as an example - let's say it's an older person.

On the surface level, they're just selling pottery supplies, but, you never know what that site may double as. The article did note it was more an issue with sites that are a bit seedy in the first place, gambling sites, porn sites, etc, being a cover for something even seedier.

I actually don't know much about it personally, so I've always been rather curious as to the accuracy.

>They are not making some magical new windows designed solely to anger people
No, they're making a very real version of Windows whose goal is to make more money.
The anger of pirates is irrelevant, you don't give them money anyway.

Most money Microsoft makes from Windows is made off of the sale of new copies of Windows through OEM licensing.
OEM's margins are razor thin and they're constantly looking out for ways to reduce their costs.
Windows 10 S gives Microsoft a way to shift the costs from the OEMs (who demand free OSes now) to the end users.

Once Windows 10 S is on a users system, no matter what they do Microsoft will be making as much money as they can.

Microsoft understandably doesn't want to lose control and so are now attempting to muscle Valve out, though they're going about it slowly in an attempt to slip it under the radar of regulators.

Microsoft is the last one. When they killed all their competitors in the 90s, even when they had superior products the people who were left who didn't want to pay the Microsoft tax had to create new business models.

Those free OSes now have forced Microsoft to look for a way to make money off of a $0 OS, but since Microsoft has way more income they have to be way more invasive in their attempts to profit off of it.

Listen guys, listen now, as an oldfag myself i gotta teach our ways to the youngsters around here, because we must be nice to newfriends so they understand and cooperate with 4chan culture, microsoft have always been on 4chan good side so in return you guys must help pointing out the outcasts:

If someone criticizes microsoft you just straight up quote them by using > (for greentexting) you can also paraphrase what you think they meant on green text, then you reply with something pro-microsoft thus correcting them.
it goes like this :

>something something microsoft bad
something something ur retarded

Its easy like that, and if you feel like you ran out of braincells to defend based microsoft, you just call them by local pejorative slangs, since we re on 4chan / v / we call them by : reddit, tumblr, rajeesh, juan, pedro.
you get the idea.

>10 S is nothing new, the cheaper surface tablets using the ARM version of Windows have a very similar limitation since W10 launched.

The ARM version of Windows was discontinued recently, all the Windows devices out there now other than phones (which are also being phased out) are x86. 10 S is something new in that this is the first time we've seen this on x86 where they can't argue that there is no other software so its no big deal.

>This is only meant to compete with chromeos on very low end hardware.
Then why are they selling it on a $1000 premium laptop? Clearly they intend for this to be the example for other OEMs to copy with their offerings.

>this is not a replacement for Windows 10 on traditional PCs.
No one has claimed that it was, just that those same restrictions would come to the majority of PCs, that it would become harder to find prebuilts without it, and as a result put traditional PC gaming at risk of being reduced to a fraction of its current market.

Find a motherboard that support Passthrough.
Install a GNU/Linux OS for general use.
On top of that set up a VM with a dedicated GPU.
That VM is what you use to run your gaming OS.

Minimal overhead, and you gain a lot of cool things from keeping that OS sandboxed.
>>
>>375783369
Don't believe their lies. The new processors work fine,I believe, but double check. As for W10 working better with games, that's not true. The only thing it has "better" for games is dx12 but not many games use that. The new gaming mode update didn't even do much and I've heard far more people talking about it not working than it doing anything meaningful for their performance

1. google digital river windows 7 isos, download the version of windows that fits your needs with a torrent client, I use halite. (you should probably download windows 7 pro 64 bit).

2. use the usb installation media tool from microsoft to mount the iso onto your flash drive and make it into a bootable device.

3. download the chipset to your motherboard from the manufacturer website and install it once windows is installed. Go to the support page for your motherboard and download that shit. don't get cocky and start downloading bioses, that shit'll fuck you up if you don't know what you're doing.

4. download your graphics card drivers and windows updates. You're good to go once you pick your antivirus if you want one.

You can do it anon, computers aren't that hard, they're just tedious.
