Can we all agree that Toy Story's CGI did not age well at all and that we've already surpassed "Toy Story graphics"?
Pic related. Unaltered screenshot of Toy Story.
not really. there are telltale signs of movie rendering in toy story and even old vidya cutscenes. the way light fractures, how some small details will have ungodly amounts of smoothing, certain shader effects and post-production stuff
Nice trollbait OP but this is an interesting topic.
Bluray screenshot of the first movie.
On a related note, I hated that movie as a kid and I hate it now.
I really liked part 3 though.
>Your point? It still looks like shit
That's my point you asshole.
That's why I uploaded a 1080p version instead of some thumbnail for ants.
Gamecube isn't 1080p
The fact is that artistically the whole thing looks like shit because the assets are of low quality.
The rendering itself is fine and so is the light and shading.
>I am. Looks like TF2 on medium settings
A screensot of TF2 on medium settings has neither that ammount of smoothing nor polygons.
Woodie himself has more polygons than a whole level of tf2
If you want a crappy screenshot of toy story use this one please.
Purely counting polygons yes its still better than what can be managed in real time and there are other things that they're doing in the movie that we still can't handle like raytracing. However in the intervening years OpenGL Has gotten better and there are now techniques like tessellation available that can close the gap somewhat.
A modern OpenGL 4.5 GPU outputting to a 4k display can produce something that while not technically better than Toy Story in every regard can look significantly better than the movie.
>I never noticed the seams along the edges of the soldiers before.
Did you notice the reflection on the 8ball?
>Woody himself has more polygons than a whole level of TF2
You're right, he does. But that doesn't mean that the movie doesn't look worse than most modern games. The lighting is horrible, most textures really shitty - it's all extremely unnatural looking. It's very early CGI at its finest, which is disgusting but for whatever reason, most people thought it was impressive.
Overall modern games look better, but Toy Story still has a higher polycount.
Yup, but there are things like poly count, shadows and number of dynamic light sources, some hair and fur that will never be in such quality like in TS because it's not necesery. And people sometimes forget about this.
When it comes to particle effects and lighting toy story is still superior. Generally speaking there's lots of modern games with pleasing aesthetics. But they are still nowhere close to the level of even a shitty looking cg movie like toy story 1.
The human faces were sims 3 tier ugly shit.
At the time TS was considered impressive, the only reason the graphics still look alright is because of the atmosphere.
Yes it may have aged bad compared to movies now, but back then it was probably considered really advanced.
>mfw games will never be able to do this
If you want a serious answer, wireframe topology has been refined quite a bit over the last decade and a half. I've seen HD remakes of some 3D games where the models look better but have fewer polys/tris when you rip them out. It's not the number of polys so much as how they're organized and the logic that you use.
If you're ever interested in 3D modeling, you should study the basics of wireframe topology if you want to get serious about it. Even so-called "professionals" have neglected the basics and justify poor topology with "well, these other guys did it."
Here's the OP scene in 1080p.
Visually it's the weakest sequence in the whole movie. Wondering if they rushed it
>If you're ever interested in 3D modeling, you should study the basics of wireframe topology if you want to get serious about it. Even so-called "professionals" have neglected the basics and justify poor topology with "well, these other guys did it."
That sounds interesting as fuck.
I always loved games that made good use of the polys they used. Especially quake 2, vagrant story and megaman legends.
I love having animated movies as Blurays because they're so crisp.
>I think it was just Sid, who was likely ugly on purpose
Man... was I the only one who kinda felt bad afterwards?
Because I WAS that kid that used to assplode toys with fireworks.
Define good use of the polys, because that's completely different from wireframe topology. Topology of the wireframe matters in the area of skeletal rigs and animation, especially facial animations.
>Define good use of the polys, because that's completely different from wireframe topology. Topology of the wireframe matters in the area of skeletal rigs and animation, especially facial animations.
I have no idea. I always felt that they looked good.
If you got some things for me to read up on this shit I'd be thankfuk
the problem wasnt really the tecnology, it was thet devs just made grimdark graphics instead of the colorful shit they did in toy story
now that there are more colorful made with good graphics, we see stuff that surprases toy story, like mario kart 8, knack and viva piñata
Does anyone else just watch these new CG movies for the TECHNOLOGY?
They improved on human models radically by the second movie.
In the original Toy Story though, the animation is more impressive than the rendering or modelling, the animation is what counts for so much still.
This shot made me do a double take to check if they filmed an actual forest
Ok, here's your regular.
This, I'm guessing:
>Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a neologism for a perceptual phenomenon characterized as a distinct, pleasurable tingling sensation in the head, scalp, back, or peripheral regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and/or cognitive stimuli.
Will video games ever surpass Donkey Kong Country: Legend of the Crystal Coconut's graphics?
>They improved on human models radically by the second movie.
The most impressive thing about movie 2 is that they redid the whole fucking movie because they accidentally deleted the whole fucking thing and had no backups.
The only reason you're supposed to hate him is because the toys are alive, but he doesn't know that. He's just an emotionally disturbed kid from a poor and abusive household making the best of the few old, broken toys he has.
At least he looked happy working at the bottom rung of society as a garbage man in 3.
What the fuck? I understand maybe not liking it, but HATING it?
I hated a bugs life so much.
My mom took me to see it and loved it.
NOW IF ONLY THOSE POOR OPRESSED PEOPLE IN CHINA COULD SEE THIS MOVIE AND STAND UP TO COMMUNISM
They must have been high when they made the movie.
>hat dream sequence
There was a backup but it was busted and they scrapped the whole movie and did it again.
>Watching Toy Story 1 as a kid
>The scene where Andy tells his mom he's worried he might leave woody and buzz behind when they move
>His mom gets up and walks out of the room
>It looks like she has no pants on
>Get a feeling so complicated
How come there was never a human, much like Kroker from Fairly Odd Parents, that knew toys could move and talk? I mean, someone is bound to see crazy shit happening and maybe go crazy because of it. Then again I'm trying to take cartoon/movie/game logic and compare it to real life so que the faggotry.
I did click on /v/, didn't I? /v/ as in video games?
Because I don't see any video games.
They exist because there are books that sold just enough/some producer or writer thought it was hot shit and blew a load into some film and computers.
I'm just waiting for the day that Warriors gets a movie, youtube would explode with deceptive cat video's
>Watch Toy Story
>Feel like every toy around me is alive and has feelings
>Can't insult them or mistreat them because I feel like I'm being a horrible person
>Then I start feeling that literally everything around me is alive and sentient
>Can't mistreat anything because now I feel like if I drop my cellphone I am "hurting" it
>Have to masturbate in a place that has no eyes, or I must turn around anything that has eyes so that it won't see me fapping
>I still do this
I talked to my computer for like 30 minutes one day, and even though I know it's absurd and stupid, I feel like I actually talked to it.
what if the walls and the floor have eyes too?
in terms of fidelity i guess so
in terms of animation lol no
woody alone still has a wider expressive range than any character in any video game, the only thing that comes close is maybe the tf2 meet the team videos (not even the actual game)
>superior multi million dollar animation comming through
That being said I just noticed that 2007 was the year that the simpsons movie released and spawned that terrible SPIDER PIG meme.
Also Big Bang Theory aired for the first time.
Also the iphone was released
Oh man you made my day with that post. My sides.
I also treat things nice just in case.
The models, rigging, textures, environments, lighting and post processing effects are so much more complex and higher quality than in any video game. Some single aspects may have been improved upon but typical CGI is so massively complex that it takes hundreds of hours to render a single frame. Now ask yourself how soon you think it's going to be before a single, small machine at home can do the same but 60 times in a second.
>yfw they almost lost the master copies of Toy Story 2
The most surprising thing is how shit finding nemo looked
>they still haven't released Satoshi Kon's other movies on blu ray
>they still haven't fucking released Spirited Away on blu ray
What the fuck, I've been waiting for years now. They've even released the more obscure Ghibli movies like Whisper of the Heart.
Are you from Niggertopia, son?
>posting release dates
Pick one and only one, you goddamn mental defective. Dreamworks’ 3D department was created by people who were fired from Pixar. They STOLE Lasseter’s goddamn ideas and made copies of their films. Antz. Shark Tale. Rio. ALL FUCKING STOLEN, you goddamn idiot.
>Can we all agree that Toy Story's CGI did not age well at all and that we've already surpassed "Toy Story graphics"?
Well it's not like it was the first completely computer-generated movie ever made.
Christ some of you are dense. It only had a budget of $30 million at the time. To give you an idea of what that amounts to around the time, Forrest Gump had a budget of $55 million. Lion King Had a $45 million budget.
Nothing like this had ever been done. Of course it's not top-tier.
Which one of the kids in the video are you?
>play nice, anon
You shoud feel bad. I don't get why you would destroy your own stuff, you obviously shouldn't fuck up other people's stuff, but I can see some reasons, but why your own?
They released skycrawlers on bluray. That was the overhyped movie from the guy who did the ghost in the shell and patlabor movies.
What a piece of shit that was.
>traditional animation will never be back for movies
>You shoud feel bad. I don't get why you would destroy your own stuff, you obviously shouldn't fuck up other people's stuff, but I can see some reasons, but why your own?
I guess I had emotional problems and it was a thrill to see things burn and explode.
When I saw toy story things changed and I treated my toys good.
the shitty 90's CGI really does a great job at making the toys look like toys, though. everything else looks like plastic shit, because it needed way more detail than what they could make back then, but the toys themselves which were the main focus of the movie looked legit, which is why it was such a success
>Don Blueth will never direct another brilliantly animated movie with some fucked up scene that will haunt your dreams
Toy Story and Bugs life Are both early CGI films that took advantage of reduced graphical capability and processing power by using lots of plastics and cloth rather than skin and other more difficult materials to convey well. Hell, you can literally use the "plastic" excuse on nearly every early pixar film. Even monsters Inc. looked great except for the little girl.
Basically John Lasseter made good choice on movie subject. Sid and backgrounds are still noticeably worse than the rest of the models
I think the characters are the best because theres really no shit writing because there wasnt any dialogue betwee them
UP has one good scene in the begining, after that its hogwash
>You will never watch an animated murder mystery movie with cats that includes a sex scene again
Why even live?
It's the fate of all CG movies.
Our grandchildren(assuming /v/ will ever have children) will look at CG movies and think they look like shit, all while movies that came out in the 1930's will be seen as "art". CG ages like milk, it looks fine when its released, but in 10 years it looks dated.
Snow White looks great, even by today's standards, it has a timeless charm to it. Toy Story by comparison shows its age, still a good movie, but looks simplistic by today's comparison.
>UP has one good scene in the begining, after that its hogwash
I will fite u m8
>Yfw there are people in this thread RIGHT NOW who DIDN'T prefer Antz to A Bug's Life.
>Ratchet and Clank
>Naming a bunch of games MasterRacefags can play on their toaster mommy got them
>giving a fuck about what people play on
>not enjoying games on PC and cinsoles
Cloudy was suprisingly good for me, and cloudy 2 was even more suprising.
I was really impressed that they made those movies so good when they looked like utter shit based on the trailers
So why does The Incredibles and Finding Nemo still look good?
seriously. Thats the only good part of the movie
even Cars was better than Up. Not cars 2 though. fuck that.
>pixar is dead and Disney is now making the animated movies
>as good as they are, they just arent pixar stories
>preferring to eat shit than eat real food
>HURR I SAY REDDIT NOW YOU ARE WRONG BECAUSE I SAID SO
Commit suicide immediately. The idea for Antz was stolen from Pixar. Period.
You're full of shit. You're telling me that fully-fleshed out characters, writing that actually makes you think about the characters, dealing with uncomfortable themes like death and moving on, themed-music, and that gorgeous animation is not god-tier?
>STILL parroting the claim that Cars 1 and 2 are bad movies.
They're really not.
>Le girls can play this why can't it be called Gameboy/girl xDDD
The SJWs have hit the children, it seems.
Name your issues.
>there's nothing really memorable or interesting and it doesnt look very good either.
Not bothering responding to people who make vague criticisms that could be applied to any film.
What the fuck?! What is this? What's the target audience?!
Not that guy, but yeah, they're alright. I would trade them in a heartbeat for more Incredibles, but Cars apparently sells tons of merch so from a business standpoint I can't say I blame them.
Cars 1 is fine, nothing great. I might even say it's as good as or better than Brave, at the least. For some reason it was a goddamn marketing triumph.
Cars 2 is what happens when Disney forces you to make a movie.
It's for kids, in Germany at least.
You should watch it, it's pretty good.
I didnt like it
get over it. I dont have any connection to old men or young boys. I really enjoyed the silent scene of his wife dying and i enjoy the idea of a crotchity old man losing his place in life, but the plot behind the movie (floating house, talking dogs, secret lair thing flying ship) was dumb. and the faggot kid. He was dumb too.
>mfw hand-drawn feature films are almost dead
I appreciate good CG animation, but why can't we have both types of animation?
>but the plot behind the movie (floating house, talking dogs, secret lair thing flying ship) was dumb. and the faggot kid. He was dumb too.
Why were they dumb?
A clear example of this is the GitS series. Just compare the vid related scene to everything else made in the same name after it. ESPECIALLY the 2.0 that looked dated even when it aired.
Well done 2D is just fucking great. The thing is, there's no money or talent for it nowadays. Blame Toy Story.
Brave had such potential. But it took a left turn a quarter of the way through the movie and went full retard with MY MOM IS A BEAR NOW
i was like "what the shit?". All the previews and the begining indicated that it was a young girl trying to prove herself as something other than a pretty princess. But then her fucking mom steals the show by being a cunty bitch and getting turned into a bear
I think that we could do something that looks like Toy Story in real time. There would be less polygons, less complex lighting, and it wouldn't have 32x ssaa (or whatever kind of aa Toy Story used) but it could still look just as good.
>mfw 2007 was the year of my parents separation
holy shit /v/, what the fuck happened that year
I wonder what Cartoon Network will marathon this year on Halloween, Monster House or Scary Godmother.
this movie was way more fucked up than it had any right to be
it's a good horror film simply because you go into it expecting a silly kids film and it just keeps dropping bombshells on you
>mom seems to not exist
>sister is always by herself
>be a typical teen on steroids
>he doesnt blow up people's things, he just plays and break his toys
>now he cant do that anymore
>nobody will ever believe him
>he will probably be hospitalized, grow insane, try to prove that toys are alive and waste his whole life on it
Sid, Sid had an hard life.
Praise the Omnissiah
A few reasons, unfortunately.
Hand-drawn animation takes longer. It's simply part of the art. In addition CG animators are a dime-a-dozen these days. Plus, flash and other animation programs pretty much killed any additional interest in the art.
Fucking yes, my friend loves it but as soon as the mom became a bear and it went the way it did I started to predict exactly what was going to happen and got bored. The art book is fucking stellar by the way, even if you didnt like the movie you should check it out.
>no money or talent for it nowadays
Many 2D specialists are still around working on feature films, but they've moved on to other roles like directing, character designs, animation supervision, or CGI itself. Also, CGI is also more likely to be costlier than hand-drawn animation but investors seem to be more willing to fund CG films for some reason.
>mfw 2007 was the year of my parents separation
>/r9k/ keeps telling me every divorce happens because women are sluts
>It was my dad's fault
Where does Don blueth think up this horrific shit?
Rock a doodle,
Filo Goes west,
All dogs go to heaven
every movie has some nightmare fuel scene in it...its so deliciously horrific.
But no worries, our country has been taken over by sjw faggots as well. There wont be an animated movie like felidae ever again comming from germany if things keep up like this
>implying stop-motion and claymation isn't superior
>implying this movie isn't god tier
>tfw there's like literally 1 fucking claymation video game
My Pixar ranking goes like this:
Toy Story 2>Wall-e>Toy Story 1>Monsters Inc.>Toy Story 3>The Incredibles>UP>Finding Nemo>A bug's life>Monsters University>Ratatouille>Brave>>>>>>>>>>>>>Cars==Cars2
thats what makes me so fucking mad
its like they were developing the movie i wanted and then someone (didney?) came in and was like THIS SHIT ISNT RETARDED ENOUGH, WE NEED TO APPEAL TO KIDS WHO CANT THINK
You can see it in every scene. Everything is detailed and gorgeous, especially her hair. But the story fucking ruined everything
Don't know if it would effect it that much but Woody was supposed to lit the firework with the match. However someone said that it would have been funnier and more dramatic for a car to blow out the match. Could explain the quality (don't forget Disney was on their ass 24/7 about his film (originally Disney wanted Woody to be the bad guy))
Don't feel bad all the Pixar staff in the Toy Story commentary actually admit they where Sid's when they where kids. For plot reasons though it he was a good idea for a villain for toys to be against.
I fucking loved that movie so much, when I heard it had a sequel I was so hyped, but then...
>the fucking "sequel"
This reminds me of that post where someone told a story. The story was where he bought a bunch of figures, and he takes amusing pleasure in masturbating on them and leaving the room because the thought of them coming alive and freaking out with jizz on them was so hilarious. And they couldn't remove the cum because then they would be found out.
>/v/ can talk about everything but vidya. Literally anything
Check out Ernest and Celestine, shows that animation can still be of worth. Thing about still backrounds is that they can look like paintings that stand on their own, cant do that as well with CG.
I can think of 4 claymation games.
Also this movie's animation is fucking godtier, especially the effects on that little girl ghost at the end, that was fucking impressive
Also the sister is fuckin bangin, dem hips nigga
Not him but you can just google this shit. I'm a 3D dev and it's mostly about making sure as much of the model as possible consists of rings of square polygons that circle around the parts to be animated. Like you've got polygon edge loops around eyes, mouth, joints and so on. And then the tricky part is interlocking them so you don't get weird knots or pinches anywhere. It's tricky stuff.
The thing that comes closest is Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories. I have no idea why they decided to go full movie quality character animation in that game but they did.
No the lighting is still so far behind it's pathetic, texturing definitely, polygon maybe, lighting hell no With the amount of time it took tender one frame with that GI we still aren't into real time rendering of that shit even this many years later.
It didnt happen, forget it, stop that.
Also Nimh portrayed a female character incredibly.
>scared as fuck
>still gets shit done
>loves her man as oppose to "I dont need no man" bullshit
Need more of that
Ghost in the shell innocence looked great though.
Global illumination is probably possible in real time to some extent. It's just that nobody bothers using it, even as an extra graphics option on PC. GI was even removed from UE4 and CDPR decided not to implement it into TW3.
German animated films are fucking hardcore.
Nyaruko is genuine 1080p. Confirmed by Daiz
That and Pixar films tend to have an enjoyable plot.
Hell only black sheep is Cars 2 but that entire film series only exists because J.L has a massive Car fetish (as well as model train and Hawaiian shirt fetish)
it was my dad's fault too
He lied to us, most likely cheated on my mother with his current Fiance who he got together with 6 months after he left my mum. And a year ago he fucked off to Australia with her, giving his entire side of the family the middle finger on the way out.
>mfw my mothers considered more a part of the family than he is
>mfw he's having a baby with his fiance through IV wizardry who's due in september via caesarian
Life's pretty fucked up.
Pretty sure Toy Story 1 doesn't have GI or any decent form of indirect illumination. Look at the backgrounds, the shadows are very poor.
Lighting is in fact one of the areas where we've come farthest, aside from realtime reflections.
Where Toy Story is still ahead is poly count and, obviously, animation, which is the main area games will likely never catch up in simply because it's too much work.
Holy shitting dicknipples what the fuck.
>all these divorce kids
haha my parents are still together fuck you faggots your parent probably divorced because of you
How is James and the giant peach?
I watched it once when I was younger and I remember loving it.
You seem a little too eager to see this, its on youtube.
It looks good mostly because hand-drawn animation and filter-using and ambientation was great too. The 3D, on the other side, feels mostly cheap nowadays except that golden statue scene that is fucking fantastic.
Clay Fighter series as well, I think there were three or so games.
oh my god the sister's pouty lips. I saw that movie with my girlfriend and had a massive bone the whole time
It was entirely animated. There was no stop motion. The reason people think that is because they scanned something like 60,000 lego bricks and used those bricks for everything.
Like, literally everything. Explosions are lego, dust is lego, even the fucking motion blur was lego.
Bugs Life was 2 things
A take/rip off of the Magnificent 7
An excuse for Pixar to up their dirt, water and plant modelling techniques. (compare plants in Toy Story to plants in A Bugs Life)
Also Bugs Life has the best Pixar villian, Syndrome being a close 2nd.
what is this from
because I want to know more about it.
Why aren't there more Roald Dahl movies? They should make a CGI BFG movie.
I didn't like the first Ghost in the Shell. It was just... some people talking, and a fight scene right at the end.
the animators are putting human emotion and body language into non human characters
they arent gonna say "How can i make this dog realistically smitten" because dogs are not as expressive as humans
if they write a scene where the girl is giving the guy bedroom eyes, you can bet theyre gonna animate it that way
i had to look this bitch up because you made me curious and i hadn't see the movie
are you fucking serious? this looks fucking awful
this seriously gave you a boner?
>a sequel to an already bad Disney movie
can someone just link me to the r34 then?
I can't believe my father cheated on my mom with an uglier woman who already had a son, and he pays for the little fucker's education and all, and it's even worse because my mom was a good wife, they seemed to love each other so much, he had no reason to do what he did, we were such a good family, and then that shit happens, fuck me, I'm getting sad and angry again.
Pixar movies are basically just a way to progress CGI tech, Monsters Inc was fur textures, Finding Nemo was water, Incredibles was humans, and Cars was to see if they could make a shitty movie, and Cars 2 was to see if they could make a shitty sequel to a shitty movie and still win the academy award
>they scanned something like 60,000 lego bricks
No anon, they literally called Lego® and asked them for 3D models, then they added scratches and fingerprints on the parts.
Pretty much the entire movie is CGI based on what we know, though they did really create the physical models before making the digital ones, for the purpose of the live sequence at the end mostly.
It isn't hard to make photorealistic renders of plastic parts.
