Personally I have no qualm calling these types of series waifufag pandering - their design intentionally emulate the straight-up pandering series undeniably aimed at self-insertion fantasies, but simply remove the bland male protagonist entirely. In fact they seem more pandering to waifu-fags to me because of that reason - even less threatening to delusional otaku self-inserting into their favorite animus than your average harem.

That said, it's fully possible for a series to have some element of pandering to your typical otaku crowds and still being good /u/. Virgins Empire for example clearly isn't trying to go for the lesbian pervert demographic with its more risque chapters, but despite the fanservice to capture horny guys the characters are still mostly allowed to develop and come into their own and eschew the most common shallow romcom/harem dime-a-dozen personality blueprints (with a few misses like miss otaku and the annoying twins). And the /u/ is actually present for once.

To be fair there's really little yuri in it if you compare that to Mair romance and in times it aired ShizNat still was a big thing.
And in the awful manga version even Natsuki was straight for Tate, and in Otome manga all girls even Shizuru had their moments with male trap.

I have no idea actually. I used to mostly read highschool shoujo romance then I came across Girl Friends and Aoi Hana and liked those. I also wanted more female MCs in books so when I came across Fingersmith and other F/F books I was hooked. It was then easy to transition to more general yuri material.

Spaghetti western is wholly different than standard western. Most of the main characters are dirty, foul, and unlikable characters that are driven by anything but romance. Most of them are just downbeat misanthropes who wander to fulfill their greed or vengeance. There are a few who are cleanly shaven and well dressed, but they're even far more disconnected from humane desires and interests. Sure, you can write a character with romantic attachment, but the plot won't be very "spaghetti". I'd love a western themed yuri, but spaghetti western is just on another plane of existence.

I get why yuri fans are complaining, since yuri is a niche genre most people don't even know about. If people start to buy on the whole "yuri is uke x uke", yuri could become a BL subgenre.
