First time I watched symphogear it was like a 4/10 to me. Now I have seen it multiple times and it's 9/10. All the problems I had before, I think are hilarious now.

Ange Vierge forced me into that mindset in like two episodes since every single scene took place in a bath. The ridiculousness of several scenes in it later, like the SPEED one, are stupid as fuck and I fucking love them.

OP music is nice because it's sung by the singers in Aikatsu (fun fact), but the rest of the anime is meh. Choppy animations and brain dead yuri fanservice only people who reached puberty may enjoy. The characters are annoying, especially Levi, and Maria stutters like a broken lawnmower.

I haven't seen FAG because the CGI is a turn off. Maybe it'll be a surprise hit like Kemono Friends (I didn't watch it yet.)

Hinako Note is probably the best so far, if you're into CGDCG.

I tend to follow feel good and comfy anime like SoL stuff of the CGDCT variety because I need that relaxing vibe after a day's worth of tiresome work. With the exception of Aikatsu, idol shows have forced drama in them that pisses me off, I avoided them entirely. I still hate Kotori since LL S1. Apart from idol stuff, I avoid angsty yuri shows because, amazingly, lesbian drama are more angsty than shounen stuff.

I liked Sasameki Koto TV for what it is, and I think it was one of the comfiest yuri shows I've seen.

I can only recommend anime and if you're planning to watch Aikatsu, watch it for the comfy and not for the yuri. Though there are good amount of yuri moments and one of the girls is mad tsundere to a fellow idol.

For other anime, there's Sasameki Koto, Yuru Yuri, Kanamemo, Battle Girls - Time Paradox, Gochiusa, Hinako Note, Ika Musume, Morita-san wa Mukuchi, Go! Go! 575, Sakura Trick, and Sabagebu.

I disagree. Most stories were more on the cute side. There was even one really adorable one shot that was just about two girls flirting on the bed. Also, at the same month Galette was out, YH had an one shot about a girl who was rejected, the girl she loved married a man and she dropped out of school living her life in misery.

Both one shots are shitty. They're not interesting or even have an important message. They have no reason to exist. Even if you want to make a "gay people suffer" story, there's way more interesting ways of doing it. But they're the exception and it's not fair to judge the entire magazine because of them.

I don't get why people want to make it a contest. Both magazines are important and should be successful. I do have some problems with some of yuri hime stories, but they also have some good titles.

Well, to me depressing stories are the ones without a resolution at the end. For example, I read an one shot on dynasty recently where the mc is remembering of her first love, a girl in her club on high school, and how she last met her before she died. Then it shows her as an adult with her girlfriend on the school roof. It's still a sad story, but it shows her moving on, so it's not really depressing.
Now make the end with her married with a man that she hates because she's a lesbian and it turn into something else, that just leave a bad taste, for pure shock value.

If those two one shot had shown they moving on in some way, there could be a value in it. But it made them look like depressed people even after years. To me that just looks cheap.

I think people complain about YH for the wrong reasons. Their idea of having diverse genres are good. But if YH wants some Kirara series, it makes no sense that MTK and Cune have better yuri stories. Their problem is not with the idea, but the titles' qualities. Most of their good series still follow the old format.

I know less about Cune, but Kirara is not good for proper yuri. Saigo no Seifuku, Futakaku Kankei and ItsuKimi are the best, but they're really atypical of Kirara. That's out of family of several magazines. The one time YH did a 4koma CGDCT series that genuinely resembled Kirara's bread and butter, Kimono Nadeshiko, it treated yuri better than any of Kirara's have.

Reading this thread I think what a lot of readers really want are just Kirara comedies like Kiniro Mosaic, Yuyushiki or Gochiusa, but instead of sprinkling heavy subtext they go yuri all the way. Nobody likes to feel conflict in their escapism anymore.

I believe you (two?) are misunderstanding your own tastes with actual writing skills. There is no logical bridge between what you argue and your conclusions, essentially being "these things are proof of bad/good writing because I say so".

Storytelling has developed way too much to rely only on "moral of the story" endings or to put character development on a pedestal and base its merits on whether it has it or not. Showing how a character cannot let go of a past love or is tormented by their own faults can certainly be good content even if it doesn't end on a good note: it shows a life, portraits an experience. If it does it with good, rounded characters it can certainly be a success (Oyasumi PunPun is a good example). Likewise, a very cute story can be incredibly superficial to the point that you can perfectly pinpoint the ending after two panels worth of reading, as it could be essentially two tired cliches interacting with each other (Wife and Wife is another good example of this).

The fact that sad stories often leave "a bad taste in the mouth" for whatever reason is more telling of the reader than of the writer's skills, in my opinion, as it shows their own morals and insecurities put into play by someone else's work.
