FAKKU's cut for doujin sales is 30% and the rest goes to the artist. Or if it's a third-party publisher it goes to them to further divide between themselves and the artist - in isya's case Yuri-ism is technically the publisher, but since they're doing it for free isya gets the whole 70%.

For comparison, on the Japanese DLSite the artist gets 50% for a similarly-priced doujin (648 yen -> 324 yen to artist), as you can see from the chart toward the end of the page here:

What do you think FAKKU could improve on? On the subject of buying single chapters, I agree that it would be nice but there's some logistical issues with that, like the higher than normal credit card fees imposed on businesses selling adult goods, which punishes small transactions the most. So sadly I can't really say if it'll ever happen, but at least being able to buy magazine issues should become a possibility one day.

Also, to address something that's been talked a lot here: with things like doujin pricing the artist has a lot of say about what goes into it. Even so, FAKKU's digital versions tend to be cheaper than Japanese digital versions of the same thing, while offering very much competitive (if not even better) cuts to the artist and a better product to boot.

Funny how it's been the opposite for me. The more fluent I've become in Japanese over the years, the more I've started to lean toward taking liberties in translation to make it sound and feel good in the target language.

Communicating with Japanese people has been a constant lesson in the importance of conveying tone, feelings, and intent—at the expense of slavish adherence to word-to-word correspondence to the source text. Being bilingual since the age of five but only learning Japanese as an adult, I've realized after some introspection that I've always been subconsciously applying these priorities to my original two languages whereas with Japanese I arrived at them after a long period of learning.

Being overly literal is actually often the cause of things being lost in translation, the most common case being an idiom that has a perfectly fine equivalent in the target language being translated literally, losing the author's intent in the process while misguidedly preserving the precise words.

But idioms are easy. Much more insidious than simple idioms are tonal choices. Different languages place different connotations on the same words due to cultural and linguistic context, and to convey the same tone you often simply CANNOT use the literal translations of the words because the intended tone and connotations do not match between the languages.

And don't get me started on the differences between a high-context and low-context language, and the amount of interpolation you have to do to even make the barest amount of sense when translating from Japanese to English. You would never translate a line of dialogue like 「たべる?」 as "Eat?" unless it's some kind of scifi thing with a robot who doesn't understand what "eat" means but instead depending on the context it could be one of any number of phrasings with more context made explicit; context that the translator has to "pull out of thin air" by figuring out what's going on. You might use "Want some?" or "Wanna eat?" or "Are you going to eat that?" depending on who's talking to who and in what situation.

Everyone goes from muh literal original author intents to "give commie, pls" as they grow older and "wiser", never heard of a case against it.
