I don't know what you're expecting. The conventional wisdom is that anime exists to advertise merchandise and the manga, so it wouldn't be good business strategy to adapt works that are done and dusted.

I play three mobage (PoGo, SIF and T7s) and I can tell you that it isn't exactly true.

I'll concede that these games are designed in such a way that you have to give up money. Both T7s and SIF calculate the score based on your card stats. The best way to get better cards is through gacha (rolling) or events. The only way to roll is to have enough of the in game currency. The best way to get it in the events is by playing the game often. It's too bad, you can only pay a limited number of times and in order to play more you will have to use the in game currency. As a result, many players put down a lot of money just to get ahead. If you want to get a specific card then guess what? You'll have to spend a lot of money.

Here's the mitigator. Nost mobage give out free stuff including the in game currency. T7s and SIF's staminas both recharge over time. Hence, all you have to do is be patient and save up the in game currency. Or if you want to play in the events, make the most of what you have and play as often as possible.

Hence you don't need money to win. However, instead of investing money, you end up investing your time in the games.

Of course, that doesn't rule out the possible ethical and legal issues. Winning feels good and some people spend a lot of money to win. Since the games involve money and chance- this begs the legal question as to whether these games would be defined as gambling under local legislation. If it could, it then causes some possible issues as underaged children play these games. The ethical question is how do we make sure the players are not actual addicts who spend so much money it ends up effecting their lives for the worse. While their lives deteriorate, they keep putting money into the imaginary electronic slot.

Due to my personality and my own beliefs, I can resist the temptation of paying to win but I can't speak for the other idiots who spend hundreds on their game of choice.
