I've been "watching" it but only really skimming through the episodes for interesting scenes.

Yesterday there was a Madoka thread. Apparently it's fallen off the board and hasn't been remade yet, so I'll ask here.
I just finally watched the series (major slowpoke, I know) and I want to know if the movies are worth watching. I'm pretty sure Rebellion is new content, so I'll watch it for sure. But the first two are recaps of the series, right? At least that's what I gathered. Is there anything in them worthwhile?
I'll probably watch them eventually anyway, but was curious about the general consensus on them.

They're not essential by any means. You get a few newly animated bits but that's about it so there's no real need to watch them if you've only just watched the TV series unless you're really intrigued by the new stuff or just wanna watch the series again but slightly quicker.

Rebellion is a sequel and is definitely worth watching.
Don't bother with the remakes (or watch them some time later if/when you want to re-watch the series). They fixed some of the QUALITY, slightly improved the animation, added a scene or two, removed some scenes, but essentially the remakes are pretty much the same thing as the show.

With the new platform arriving early next year, the arrival of a new Yuri Smash Sisters and an ever expanding roster is inevitable. Who do you guys want to see playable?

Now it'll only be 3 or so years since Smash 4 /u/ back in 2014, so fresh newcomers are kind of slim pickings, but I think there are some classic and legacy heroines that haven't been repped yet.

Yuuki Yuuna or one of the Valkyrie Drive girls is a safe bet as an early frontrunner, but I'd really love to see someone from Sabagebu or Kancolle as a military-themed ranged fighter.

I also hope Kuroko Koumori makes the leap from Assist Trophy to the playable roster this time.

To be fair, even back in the good ol' days of Otsu Hiyori and Minamoto Hisanari, a large section of the magazine was filled to the brim with oneshots, and a lot of them had bad-endings with set-ups just like this where the heroine mopes for the entire chapter before coming to terms with their unrequited love.

Seeing lesbians in an 80s or 90s anime is pretty dang rare. I was watching Patlabor in all its QUALITY dub and one Character of the Day had a crush on Noa (who thought it was just an admiration thing). Unfortunately I'm not sure how viable that is, it would depend on why they left in the first place. If it was strictly the lack of opportunities offered by a smaller, younger company like Ichijinsha then maybe the Kodansha takeover will change that. If it was something more personal (which I believe is more likely, though I don't like to speculate) like that they were dismissed because the magazine wanted to go in a different direction, or left on their own volition because of "creative differences", then there's little reason to expect them back unless there are some major changes made to management. I honestly don't think they should replace him or anything, since I don't think someone less dogged (and frankly a bit crazy) could have kept the magazine alive this long. But it would be great if they could temper his influence a bit, or help him turn grand ideas into functional plans (and perhaps stop chasing after trends that are on the way out already).

I don't actually mind the idea of YH being a place to foster new talent, but it bothers me that they don't seem to be able to actually do a good job of it. Unsurprisingly, they also don't seem to develop much during their time with the magazine.

What you don't realize is that this "special relationship" is supposed to be romantic love. Just that it's being saying in a country where talking about homossexuality isn't that easy. It's not even that people reading it will get offended, it's cultural.

I believe that's the biggest mistake west makes about yuri. They take these definitions at face value. I've seen texts saying that yuri could be close friendship since some 15 years ago. I didn't even knew what yuri was then. The very first definition I saw was "yuri is like a close relationship between girls, not necessarily romantic in nature, like Tomoyo and Sakura".

I doubt people read yuri for friendship. Even in things like YrYr. Maybe some readers don't care about the romance, maybe they think it's just a phase, but they do know that at least at that point, those girls are in love with each other. And if they had a problem with that, if they hated that, they had a lot of other options to choose. Another mistake is complaining about things that never were sold as yuri aren't yuri. MTK series might attract yuri fans, maybe even be written by yuri fans, but it's not yuri by definition.

Also, take by example the recent interview with Canno. She said she likes yuri because it's ambiguos whether it's romantic love or not. But not matter how you read A Kiss and a White Lily, it's clearly romance.

So yeah, don't try to hang too much on a definition of the genre by a japanese magazine. You'll probably never see they saying: "yuri is about lesbian romance". Even though that's what yuri is.

It states that under the broader definition of yuri, lesbian material would be included but not synonymous because under that definition yuri covers a broader scope (the book also acknowledges multiple times that defining the boundaries of yuri is a matter of great contention, and presents the above definition in that context).

I think the biggest problem is people trying to categorize relationships into tidy boxes. Sure, it's pretty straightforward for a lot of cases, but there are definitely exceptions.

Hibike is the closer to romantic friendship than a lot of subtext shows, but yuri fans won't buy it as yuri because of the obvious het plot.

I like to consider yuri as a demographic more than a genre sometimes, too. For example, MTK works aren't yuri, but they do get yuri fans attention. Mostly because they see romance there (sometimes intentional, sometimes just in their heads). So it's a case of something that don't belong to the yuri genre but that fall on yuri demographics.
