FIRST EPISODE EXPLANATION FOR DUMMIES:
>There is a shady scientist organization searching for the crystal shards hidden inside Deep Illusion, a parallel world. A pair of girls with special powers is needed to enter Deep Illusion. Papika is one of these girls but it seems that her partner has failed repeatedly. Papika is tired of waiting around for a compatible partner so she escapes to look for one herself. Papika was probably raised inside the laboratory and has little to no idea of how to actually interact with humans, she is probably a bit brainwashed and believes "getting the crystal shards" is a treasure hunt game. The scientists control the robot in order to make sure Papika follos the mission. Cocona doesn't actually need the glasses, they only hold sentimental value; likely from her dead parents. Papika takes Cocona into Deep Illusion in order to search for the crystal shard but fools around first because she is basically a big child.

I thoroughly enjoyed that. The art and the sound direction were on point and charming as fuck.

The main heroines reminded me of Nono and Lal'C and the story played out like Ghibli on an acid trip .

Pure Illusionist is the team name, like Izumi Todo for Precure series. Usually there's main writer then, and she's credited as script and story concept, that's why I assumed she does series composition too.
Story concept is usually credited to the original author. Like, if it's based on a manga, it's the mangaka name. The name is also in a big highlight at the ending for someone with a little known name in the industry.

I think it's safe to assume her involvement in the story is big. Although the director usually has a big part on the story, too.

For all we know, though, this could be a personal project that she showed to the studio or something. But since she's not Gen Uburochi, we might never know.

Still, I'm impressed regardless. The script was pretty good. We only knew her for slice of life stories, but it looks like she might be real talented.

Probably my favorite show of the season so far, and that's saying something - there's been a lot of strong ep1's.

The animation is delicious, the whimsical-vibe-with-dark-undertones thing is great, and it's very possibly yuri - subtext or not.

Fun things about this scene:

The entire greenspace is on top of a building embedded in a hillside.

That last is kind of obvious but I didn't notice until just now. Also it's fairly unusual to have an actual tree growing on top of a building like this since the roots would usually tear it apart. Pretty cool campus.

Speculah time:
The events in the show are not real.
In reality, "Cocona" is a depressive schizophrenic and tried to commit suicide prior to the events in the anime.
The result of this failed suicide landed her in some comatose state, and the events in the anime are depicting the dreams she is having during this time.
It is finally revealed she had attempted a double suicide (shinjuu) with a fellow schizophrenic girl whom she became intimate with, who looks exactly like the "Papika" in her dreams. They are both comatose in the same hospital room that they share, and they are experiencing their 'afterlife' together (as in traditional Japanese belief) in their dreams that they share.

When the girls first notice the "frosted trees" Papika calls them "Obake"
>Obake (お化け ?) and bakemono (化け物 ?) are a class of yōkai, preternatural creatures in Japanese folklore. Literally, the terms mean a thing that changes, referring to a state of transformation or shapeshifting.
Which is pretty close to what they actually were and yet another reference to illusions.

It's also how the producers executed the theme

as Papika saw a world that was much closer to its reality while Cocona saw the illusion.

The huge differences in Cocona and Papika's personalities increases the chance that one or the other will see through an illusion which might make them better suited to exploring the worlds of Pure Illusion then the twins, for example, who are likely to either both see through an illusion or both be fooled.

Of course, our heroines can only leverage that advantage if they learn to communicate well and trust each other.

The dusk-colored world, the soft grass, the calm after all that happened in the other world was great, and then there was Papkia's joy, and all of this was capped by horror. It really worked for me. Kind of like the scene at night in the snow, from that beautiful long shot of the woods with the intermittent light. Those hints of darkness in a calm scene are great.

I think this show has a serious shot at being 'the' show of the season. Maybe even better.

I haven't been this excited since Yuuki Yuuna was airing. And before that, I hadn't been as excited since Madoka.

Only one episode in, so things could get worse, but every ounce of the show seethes with potential. I'm usually overly pessimistic with this kind of thing but I can't help but be hopeful and expect great things. This feeling is really enjoyable.
