On a separate note, I wanted to ask about a random thing. This is more /v/, but it might affect us. I've heard that 1 Jap VN company (at this point of time) is going to use Denuvo copy protection for their VNs. Likely, others will adopt a wait and see approach to see if they will follow suit.

Would you buy Yuri Vns, with Denuvo copy protection? Would you buy English localized/English VNs, if they do that? Also, do you think this will affect things like fan translations for us?

As far as I know it's expensive, so most won't bother with it. Every once in a while you have this one company who's like "oooh noo, the ONLY reason we won't sell much is because of the pirates!!!". And then they realize, that's not it.
I think Denuvo is mostly for AAA games. And even there you can argue about its worth, seeing how these usually have their own "please BUY" mechanics built in. (i.e. Multiplayer) But they have the budget and don't REALLY need additional word of mouth advertising.
Though most(?) VNs in Japan have free trials that have significant enough content to spread the word. Mostly shitty trials is what makes me not against pirating. Few trials in the west actually offer enough content for you get an idea of how the game works. I've seen enough which are just the tutorial. That's NOT helping.

As for here? Nah. Steam is the next big thing, while everything else is more or less DRM free? I think neither JAST, nor Mangagamer still use DRM for their own products. Dunno about Sekai and their stuff outside of Steam. But for now, embrace Steam and "all-ages" VNs I suppose.

I've never seen anything like that and I've played a hell of a lot of demos. Most give you at least an hour's worth of gameplay, but people still complain because they didn't get to use every single power that slowly unlocks over the course of the game (ie, play the whole game free)

However, there is a large shift away from demos in the industry these days. They cause a lot of extra coding headache and don't actually drive much in the way of sales. Few people bother using them at all, not even for the purpose of "make sure it runs on your computer" - and some people download a demo, see that it DOESN'T run on their machine, and then buy the full game in case somehow that magically works better.

Customers tend to make up their minds based on the idea and the screenshots.

The main use for demo versions these days, and one reason you might see super super short ones, is for Kickstarter, to demonstrate that a developer is capable of making an exe that runs before being handed thousands of dollars.

I don't actually know what Denuvo copy protection is, but I have refused in the past to buy games if the DRM is mean enough, and that wouldn't change just because it's yuri.

Nasty DRM means I'm not giving you money until a working crack exists so I know there's a backup for me to play with when your system inevitably fails.

Well, different experiences. All I tried didn't help much. And demos being so crappy is also a major reason why people don't try them. Instant they pirate the game. I do think this is at least to an extend true. (of course not everyone pirating would actually try a demo if the demo would be good)

And then you also have stand-alone demos, which also don't help. I've had that as well. You play for 30-60 minutes, hit the "please buy the full game now".. but the demo doesn't allow you to save or anything, so have fun replaying everything. This isn't /u/ related, so I'm not calling names here, but it's a vicious circle. With all those shit demos around, of course people try demos less and less.

If you're familiar with either SecuROM or VMProtect, it's basically that. Only slower, more buggy and the latest version hasn't been hacked yet and isn't going to be in the foreseeable future, so I guess it's doing its job properly, but I honestly wish it would just die already.

- Hero: good means, good intent
- Anti-hero: evil means, good intent
- Anti-villain: good means, evil intent
- Villain: evil means, evil intent

Hatsune's main objective is to live (and as such she needed to rape/eat humans). This is not an evil intention because she is no longer a human, and as such cannot be judged by human moral standard (similar to how you do not say Kyuubey is evil). She treats humans as livestocks and toys because it's her nature. She's the "good guy" because she's fighting against somebody whose INTENTION is not noble. Another example is someone who wants to kill a whole village just to save their own family - evil, but morally "admirable" because they're doing bad things for a good cause.

A villain protagonist (Fuminori, or Kratos) are people whose neither methods nor goals are admirable. They do bad things for a bad cause. They might have been pushed into such situation by circumstances (a disease, or misery) and as such are sympathetic, but their overall goal is still unambiguously evil.

What's great about her is that while she loves sex, she doesn't just have sex with anything that moves (see Ryoko). She likes Mitsumin. Loves teasing her, but she will never sex her up because she knows Mitsumin craves Souun. And I'm fine with that.

The one thing I find a lot of VNs suck at is building up the relationship. I find a lot of Souun and Ilya's relationship to be downright annoying because of how unbelievable it is. It's made worse by the existence of the Mitsumi route where Ilya suddenly drops the jealous bitch act completely and Souun no longer has any issues with loving someone. I find the route split is seldom done right, especially when the route split happens late in the game. What actions lead a character to fall in love with one character over the other? It becomes a problem when there is such a huge overlap. While I know Echika's death was the catalyst, it doesn't explain why Souun would return those feelings so quickly. My beloved Akaiito does it right in this aspect with an early route split, even if it does potentially suffer from a "met and committed double lover's suicide over the span of 4 days" in one of its routes.

Kiriri and Echika (sorry this feels more natural to me) are said to be in love way before the events of the VN. They've known each other for a long time, and it's a lot easier to believe that yes, Echika fell in love with her at some point. Given that, I would not want her to have an alternate route. It would be even less believable than Mitsumi and Ilya's. It's awesome that she has a great dynamic with literally every character though, as opposed to that other emotionless robot. And Su's route has one of my favourite Kiriri/Echika scenes in the VN.

Don't forget that the player is the one who decides the MC's feelings. As such, there's nothing strange with the MC liking one character over the other. It all depends on which personality/appearance appeals more to said player.

I haven't played to that part yet so I'm not defending the writing of Souun's romances, it could be bad like you said, but it would not be because of the late route split. It's totally believable that Souun can regain feelings because the player themselves would react like that if they were in his shoes. Another player would act differently.

Similarly, Ethica's long time crush on Kiri-nee might be explained away as an adolescence thing and she finds a true love during deathly combat (if another romance option were available). VNs are all about deciding how an MC would react to certain things.

I love how the game keeps the romance options for the two MCs separated. It's like Katahane. I do wonder what I'd feel about a game where there are separated options, as well as 1-2 shared options (not threesomes of course, just deciding which MC will get her).

Somebody mentioned otome games in the previous thread and it reminded me that months ago I tried playing this one called Sumire no Tsubomi because I heard there was a yuri route in it. I played it for a while, got a few scenes with the female love interest, who is this awesome actress that the MC idolizes, it had potential. But the interaction with the male love interests was just unbearable, they all act like pushy spoiled brats, which I guess is attractive to the game's actual target audience. I tried to keep going anyway, but I kept taking longer and longer breaks until I just forgot about it.

Anyone here play this? I'd just like to know if the yuri ending is even worth the effort. I looked at the CG set, it does have kissing and (really tame looking) sex CGs with the female character, but I don't wanna bother if it's some sort of bittersweet ending or whatever.

Unfortunately this is one of those questions that many people have an opinion on without having any actual evidence, and will invent a lot of silly theories that don't line up with the reality. (Which isn't that much different than what many of the authors or marketers are doing, coming up with vague guesses of what people want.)

There ARE male protagonist games with male routes. Older games used to have a joke route for the male best friend, which sometimes was the same as the Bad End and sometimes wasn't. Quite often these routes had no actual pictures of the two guys together, though, and at least a few of them did the "last minute sex change" gag as well. More recently, there are several games with a cross-dressing male character among the love interests. There are even a few games that legitimately provide fleshed-out male and female love interests, though they're quite rare. I could come up with a list but it's kind of off-topic for /u/.

Actual yuri routes in japanese otome games remain rare as well. There are plenty with friendship routes, or slight-subtext routes, though, and real yuri routes are more common in english-written otome games.

One theory I've seen for the proliferation of friendship routes is that the people making a lot of the otome games really want to be making bishoujo games and therefore end up putting too much effort into designing the pretty girls.

So.. I completed the balanced (?) route for tsui yuri. It's around 4-5 hours in length for this one route.

It's... okay I guess. The Japanese in this VN is very basic imo. I would have preferred if they used a bit more Kanji where they could. They also tend to rely more on monologue than voiced speech, with quite a bit of lines being repeated to drive the point home. Art is pretty tame. Obviously, the story revolves entirely around their relationship. It should still be better than the SonoHana series (what I remember of it. I have not touched it in years) in the sense that they do spend a bit of time building it up.

Basically the story can be summarised as:
1. Both make the admission to self that they have romantic feelings for the other
2. Both agonise over how their feelings probably won't be returned
3. One side decides to yolo it; extreme confession scene. The other side decides to put a lid on her feelings; runs away.
4. Both realise feelings were mutual
5. One runs away some more because it's wrong
6. Take drastic action
7. Finally get together and have hot secks
8. Date and hot sex
End.

It's very Futaba -> Ichika during sex. Ichika is very passive in that aspect. I'm looking forward to the not so balanced ones. I currently prefer Ichika as a character. I don't really like how Futaba sounds or how lacking in brains she can be. Thank god for her character growth.

There's a total of 4 routes based on the slider:
Extreme towards Ichika
Extreme towards Futaba
Slightly unbalanced
Perfectly balanced

Branching happens from the point where they realise their feelings were mutual onwards. Two of the branches (slightly, towards Futaba) are told from Futaba's pov, the other two from Ichika's.

Futaba's extreme route has her raping Ichika twice and making lots of unwanted advances, before committing a murder suicide when Ichika still rejects her. She also thought about murdering all those around Ichika, including her parents and close mutual childhood friends, who she blamed for making Ichika think that it's wrong for them to be together..

Ichika's extreme route has Ichika develop a jealous possessiveness. She uses SM play to turn Futaba into her sex craving slave. When this starts to affect Ichika academically and Futaba physically, her parents try to send Ichika away to boarding school. Ichika then gets out of it by murdering her parents and making it look like an accident. The route ends with Ichika coming home to a chained up Futaba with a vibrator in her vagina. She thinks to herself that she will have to kill both Yuri and Saki, her childhood friends, because they've begun asking after Futaba, whom Ichika has kept imprisoned at home.

Ichika doesn't run away in the perfect route and story wise, this route features the chracters acting the most logically.

Ok.. Silly me. It seems I made a mistake in how the routes are determined. There's no need to get a perfectly balanced bar. How embarassing. I was 0.5 bars away from the good Ichika route.

The 4 routes are...
Good and bad Ichika, Good and bad Futaba instead.

Basically 11th choice will determine whether you go to the Ichika side or the Futaba side. 12th choice will be the final slider modifier. 12th choice moves the slider the most (+ or -1.5 bars). If you get the extreme points allowed for Ichika, then the last choice will not be enough to move you to good Ichika route. After the 12th choice, if the other side has only 3 bars left, you go to the bad route. At least 3.5 and you enter good route. It should work similarly for Futaba's.
