Which couples do you see actually lasting more than a few years?

I kinda suspect Matsuri/Miyu might get on each others nerves a lot when they actually get to live together. But on the other hand, they are pretty good at dealing with conflict.
Tsukuyu/Kiri I don't really know. As ironic as it sounds, it kinda feels like Kiri just has an adolescent crush on Tsukuyo.
Miki/Seina have good chemistry, though, I think they probably won't split up. I like how they went out of their way to mention that Miki will be going to college near home so they can still see each other.
Umi/Sasa is too early to tell I think. They're really cute together, but we don't really get to see much of them as a couple.
Yuna/Hina are pretty inseparable, so I don't see them breaking up. I wonder what Hina will do for a living to support her wife, though.
Youka is an idiot, so I could almost see her sleeping with some groupie without realizing that that's cheating.

Nah, their relationship arc was the strongest proof of how a lasting relationship can work through problems. Overcoming a big hurdle in a long-term relationship like that is hard work and even though they way it happened was very silly they still learned to rely on each other and talk about things instead of keep it in and fight. Anyway, I've been a yuri fan for about 4 years, and I've never played/read/watched something like Kindred Spirits. Easily 10/10, topping Milk Morinaga's Girl Friends as best in the genre.

Just completed it. Like another anon had said in the previous thread, I love yuri but hate the genre. Rarely has there been one thats written in a way people who've actually read a good book or two before would be genuinely satisfied with. Besides Octave, this has got to be the only yuri that has this good characterization. While it isn't anything mindblowing it's still more enjoyable than almost all yuri out there.

I too have read my fair share of yuri manga, and I agree with you; in fact, very few of them had me invested in the characters and their story as much as Yurirei did.
Then again, I gotta admit that I'm not a great fan of super angsty manga like SK or Aoi Hana, and I believe that the balance between comedy and light drama was just perfect for my taste in this VN, a level of balance that I rarely see in my yuri manga.

But alas, yuri fans mostly like it, which is.. to be expected. It plays save. INSANELY save. Not a problem per se, if you like yuri manga for the most part anyway. But that about it. For anything else, it's just way too shallow.

As nicely written as the individual scenes can be, there's no substance. If you don't see yourself in a character or fill in the blank parts yourself, the relationships feel mostly half-assed. The VN doesn't really try to make you invested into the characters, to understand them. This is totally fine, as long as you stay with the MC's perspective. She IS disconnected after all. But once you get to the couple POV this fails. They probably didn't want to spend much time with the "why", so this part was mostly left out. A common thing with yuri manga, as they don't have much time, and every page you spend with the time before the girls fall in love is "not yuri". (see Girlfriends) Still, it's an important part if you ask me. Though it depends on your viewpoint. Some may like the overall disconnected feeling, though I think this works better if you CAN fill in the gaps and like the typical archtypes used by this VN. If not.. well, then it probably ends up disappointing. (I've seen several responses like this)

Finally there's also how the MC falls in love, WHO she falls in love and how the whole things was written rather badly, but eh. I suppose for most this gets solved via "cute is justice". But it further cements how this VN doesn't care about "why" and anything it does in that direction isn't too good. Strengths lie somewhere else.


Well, it's an interesting work, for all kinds of reasons, that's for sure.

The premise is laughable, it has the typical osananajimi route, some of the characters fall in love at first sight and operation sparkling sunshine was just silly (which already goes without saying). Some of the romances seem very very shallow, but the characters themselves and the way they work out their problems aren't, which has been some of the best I've seen in yuri. But I guess the seemingly shallowness of it could already cancel whatever else that comes after if realism of the romance is important for you. And I myself prize realism first and foremost in whatever I read, but the way the game handles the characters wins over desu.

Is it expensive because it costs a lot to produce or because they're prime otaku money-sink products + added costs that come with import? Amazon.co.jp has MRSP for the Yurirei CDs between ￥ 2,700 and ¥ 4,320 depending on which CD although some are now on sale or out of stock. $23-38 before adding in the cost of importing (more money), which usually requires a proxy (even more money), so it could easily cost well over $100 to import these 4 CD's if we had no other option, but now we do. Usually Mangagamer makes physical copies many months or even a year+ after the digital. For example, another of yesterday's announcements is the May release of the psysical copy of Free Friends, which was released digitally on June 2015.

My guess is that we'll have the psysical copy at the end of the year, possibly even a limited edition with all the drama cds.

I literally don't understand why the game decided to tease Yuna/Ano at all. When I first started the game, I though she'd be an option. When I look at the trailer, same. Then there's that question in game asking if I like Ano or Hina more. I'm not the only one being misled, so I'm pretty confident it's not a case of some hipster being delusional. It feels like the writer didn't have enough time to put in a route for Ano, despite having planned for it. Oh well.

Hina completely comes out of nowhere. She goes from "minor side-character nobody knows or cares about" to "sudden love interest, because REASONS".

It was handled pretty badly. The main heroine of the story shouldn't be written like this. Up until she randomly becomes more important, the Ano seems like a much more likely choice. Ano or the ghosts. The way the ghosts act during the first few chapters, that wouldn't be such a weird thing either.


Let's just say, there'd be plenty they could've done better with this VN. Unfortunately I think this goes for all(?) yuri VNs. They fuck up SOMETHING. And usually not just a minor thing that you can easily ignore, no but something relatively big. How much you still like the VN then comes down to how much you mind the fuck-up. At least that applies to what I played: This, Aoi Shiro, Katahane, Seisai no Resonance, Kamitsure, Shirokoi and the first two Sono Hana games. So a good sample-size at least.

Speaking just for myself, excessive work on sound effects always reminds me of the horribly localized manga that actual companies release. Reminds me of those dark days reading flipped Ranma volumes and not knowing any better.

what i fear mostly is subpar adaptation(like tsukihime) or rushed adaptation, the vn is quite long and i honestly think 12 episodes anime wouldn't be enough to cover all couples

There is an infinitely better chance of LiarSoft making more good yuri VNs than them giving a ton of money to an animation studio. The anime itself wouldn't make money regardless of how good the adaptation was because explicit yuri never does well and they wouldn't invest in an anime to promote a 4 year old VN.

The studio isn't the problem. It's the staff, it's always the staff. Off the top of my head, one of the best directors for adaptation is Saki and Horizon director, Manabu Ono. And Reiko Yoshida, Marimite scriptwriter, for series composition.

Of course, there are other positions to be filled like the sound director, chief animation director, episodes director, storyboarder, etc. I can't be arsed to come up with names for them though.

I'd think it's more than just a problem with content though. The story isn't linear and events are far apart and short which is kind of terrible for pacing. Another problem is that they'll have to find another way to portray the characters without overly-relying on inner-monologue.

If they make an anime I hope it's adapting the manga or that they'll be flexible rather than trying to be a 100% accurate adaptation.
