Shot in the Dark is MIA because of legal issues (one of the hired guns in Ozzy's band outright stole the song from the singer from his previous band, which had never recorded it; said singer found out that said musician passed the song off as his own/got Ozzy to record it and sued Ozzy. Ozzy responded by firing said hired gun musician and having his wife get his label to remove the entire album from circulation to cockblock the song's writer's lawsuit, claiming ignorance of the whole affair, and even went as far as having his label pull his late 90s greatest hits album from shelves when a label executive had SitD included due to Ozzy not having any involvement in the track list make-up).

As a kid, it blew my fucking mind and it is VERY densely packed for a music video. So much so that it takes a couple of viewings to fully take in the complete nightmare fuel portrait the video is painting.

I'd also toss in Michael Jackson's "Thriller", Kate Bush's "Running Up The Hill", Nine Inch Nail's "Down On It" (the uncensored version), Madonna's "Express Yourself", and George Michael's "Freedom '90".

Metallica was one of the, if not THE biggest heavy metal band in the late 80s.

They also were openly contemptuous of MTV and music videos in general.

Metallica finally deciding to do a music video was a huge thing. So much so that MTV was willing to be hypocritical douches and air it, even though it violated their rules on banning any videos that promote suicide. Because it was Metallica in a music video and they were finally giving MTV the time of day.

Shot in the Dark was not the only reason why the Ultimate Sin album was removed from circulation by Ozzy.

Besides the legal issue regarding Shot In the Dark, the album was yanked from production by Ozzy to punish Jake Lee, the lead guitarist on the album.

Lee ghost-wrote the bulk of Ozzy's solo album "Bark At the Moon" (as Ozzy's drug addiction plus the death of Randy Rhodes, had made him a complete mess) but got fucked out of receiving credit and royalties for the work.

After Bark came out, Ozzy went into rehab and came out with a huge case of writers block and needed Jack Lee to help co-write the new album. Lee had a good amount of material available (but not Shot in the Dark, that was provided to Ozzy by Phil Soussan) but refused to hand it over unless he got full credit for his work AND royalties.

Ozzy pulling the album from circulation, on the surface, was him making the accusations of about stealing another songwriter's work go away. But in truth, it was all about him fucking over Jack Lee, who got a considerable chunk of change from album sales/royalties from the songs.

Lee was also vindictively purged from the infamous 2002 reissue of Bark at the Moon, as Ozzy had his work replaced with one of his then current band member's guitar work to further screw him out of money (this was also done with another band member for Ozzy's first three albums).

Basically, Ozzy and Sharon are so fucking greedy, that they would sooner purge an album from Ozzy's catalogue rather than honor a financial deal they had with one of Ozzy's band members. The Shot In the Dark controversy just gave them cover from what they were doing.

Anyone watch MTV Classic these days, since they stopped airing old MTV shows in favor of doing 24-7 music video blocks?
