>A police detective falls in love with the woman whose murder he is investigating.'
Yes, that's what's so tragic about the ending to The Return. Coop wasted the prime of his life by pursuing the Laura Palmer case beyond it's natural conclusion, and then when he's finally free instead of moving on and going to live with his loving family he sends a shell of himself to go live his life for him while he dives right back into the Laura case, this time displacing himself for good.

I don't understand all the people saying the finale retroactively ruined the entire series. Is your whole existence invalidated by the fact that you're eventually going to die? Just enjoy it as series of entertaining vignettes and focus on how they make you feel, the big picture doesn't matter. If you truly didn't enjoy the experience of the 16 preceding parts and all the shitposting they birthed I'm not sure why you watched up until the end anyway

I really want to rewatch the Entire Mystery BR but I only have a 720p TV here (86cm, 32inches), I think it's kind of plebeian to watch it this way...

I have a 24' 1080p PC monitor, I plugged my PS3 to it but no sound and I don't have the cables to plug it into my speaker phones... they don't even have a jack outpout anyway.

It's really annoying that I have to download these in 1080p when I actually own the BR. Will a good torrent version of the episodes will be of lesser quality than the BR on my 24' monitor ? It's kino we're talking about so I'm taking everything into consideration.

He's out of one lodge and likely into another (lights blowing out in the house, the question he asks at the end, etc.) .

We were led to believe that Cooper was the one guy capable of understanding all the things going on, only for the rug to be pulled out from underneath us at the end. In the end, most of the meanings/theories derived by the fanbase are bullshit, just like many derived by Cooper in the show. The ending revealed that Cooper never had any idea of what was going on (except for Bob and a few other situations).

Cooper failed miserably as soon as he stepped into the lodge during season 2. He has been damned ever since to try chasing after Laura Palmer, fail saving her, and continue on with his miserable crusade because of who he is, in spite of how damned the situation is.

>>
I don't really get why Cooper wanted to save Laura from that specific point in her life. She was ready to die, and she was better off dead from all the physical and mental abuse she suffered.

FWWM kind of suggested that Cooper may be able to save her because the red room exists outside of time, so I had always thought maybe he would stop BOB from the beginning.

I still don't understand how taking away from the point before her death saved her when BOB was going to kill her because he thought he knew his true face. And because she got seperated from Cooper before he could lead her to safety.

I liked the ending but I was kind of disappointed that we didn't see anything about Cooper's mental state. I definitely didn't expect him to be acting his normal self, which he was, and I can't tell if that means that time passed by quickly for him in the red room or not.

You would think he would have had all the time to think about saving Laura and the repercussions.

She whispers "My father killed me."

The original, undoable tragedy. Cooper can save other people in the present, and can make lives better, but he can never erase evil in the world. That's why he is unhappy, and why we should be unhappy too. All the same, Cooper saved lives and improved other peoples' lives, so what he did was not all in vain.

The whole point of the season was showing how people can change for the better (fix their hearts or die). To dwell in the pessimism is only showing a narrow and limited view of life - the stuff that separates the Lauras of the world from the Sarahs/Lelands.

the miserable crusade of... making peoples' lives better with kindness and understanding? You sound like a jaded and miserable person.

If he's damned, he's damned because he will always fling himself into a situation to try and totally stop evil. he gets close but never completely finishes the job, because you can't totally eradicate evil from this world. I think this is partially the secret that Laura whispers into his ear, on a metaphorical level.

Terrible and jaded? Huh? That's what the fucking ending was numb nuts.

Cooper thought there was a meaning behind it all in the end (just like the people who sit around trying to draw a concrete meaning from metaphysical concepts/principles that are inconsistent and don't make any sense), the fact that he expected to find Laura in the diner, going to her house expecting her to remember him, going to her mother's house expecting to find her mother and save the day, etc.

The ending revealed that nothing went right in his plan, and that he had no idea what he was doing the entire time. He is likely still stuck in some warped/twisted reality, likely inside another lodge with completely different rules/principles, while abandoning his world that had become a better place/stable. Cooper is what happens when you're arrogant and overly optimistic.

Cooper's life is one of personal suffering, but I guess because everyone else is happy then that's okay right?

An alternative view is that they transcended the need for garmonbozia (explaining the arm's evolution) and just tried to help Cooper kill BOB to spite him.
>>
>>87417232
I didn't know how season 2 would end since I went in blind, but I did know it got cancelled so the ending didn't shock me as much. I appreciated how much it inspired people though, even if it was a short series with a shitty second season (after Leland's death ofc).

Every episode of season 3 was unexpected and I knew all of my theories would turn out to be wrong, but seeing it end the way it did still shocked the fuck outta me. Don't get me wrong, they're both good endings and they stick with you a lot, but I felt the mood for season 3's ending was much more moody and reflected a creator who knew how he wanted to finish the story (instead of being forced to finish it because no more episodes would be made).

>Cooper's life is one of personal suffering, but I guess because everyone else is happy then that's okay right?
Man you sound bitter. This is a theme that is touched on in Fire Walk with Me, but with Laura. Her suffering was real and acutely felt. But it wasn't all for nothing, because not only did she protect others (both physically and metaphysically), but she in a sense "transcended" or redeemed herself in the end and saw a bigger purpose. Did you watch the movie? Or maybe you just don't have a sense of the world outside of yourself? That's not to be accusatory. A main theme of this season was becoming aware of the world around you and "waking up" to your true self or potential. This is combined with moving beyond the past. It's ultimately a season about growth, but growth can be both happy and sad.

The sign is a subtle joke. The shop is called "Sneed's Feed & Seed", where feed and seed both end in the sound "-eed", thus rhyming with the name of the owner, Sneed. The sign says that the shop was "Formerly Chuck's", implying that the two words beginning with "F" and "S" would have ended with "-uck", rhyming with "Chuck". So, when Chuck owned the shop, it would have been called "Chuck's Fuck and Suck".

It's an undeniably ambiguous conclusion, but ffs it's supposed to be a mystery, part of the fun is weighing up different interpretations and explanations. All theories will be leaky in some way or another because Lynch's sense of plot and narrative coherence is terrible, but that doesn't mean we can't tinker with our own understanding of it.

Somehow I feel as if having to come up with one's interpretation is an intended part of the ending.

My take on it is that Cooper bailed and went home to Janey-E. How is this justified? We do know that a copy was made and it sure looks like a new Dougie went home and Cooper went on with his adventure but at the same time Cooper sure is acting differently the closer he comes to "becoming" Richard.

Cooper knew that the adventure could never really be resolved and that there were greater evils still out there. It's safe to believe that Cooper awoke from his coma with knowledge of the Black Lodge when he specifically asked about "the seed." It's also clear that Cooper became the magician, or at least a magician, in the end during his initial interaction with MIKE approaching him in the darkness.

Cooper's solution was to send on a copy and instead go home himself to a loving family. We know there's also a copy of Diane that peeks out from behind a corner. Tulpa Diane earlier in the series saw a clearly shady ass ghost hobo walking around and explained it away as "I don't know what I saw." This provides the basis for Copy Diane/Linda seeing the real Diane peeking out, making sure Richard and Linda are on their way.

What does this resolve? Judy is deceived into crafting deeper and deeper deceptions herself to keep Laura Palmer away from her.

>>
>>87418313
If not for their cancellation there wouldn't be The Return.
We'd get 3-4 more seasons and each episode would be more meh than the last, especially considering that Lynch wouldn't direct most of them.
There would be no FWWM and Lost Highway further down the line. Because of that Mulholland Drive would be 2002-2003, and by that time we had Carnivale and LOST was just around the corner, so maybe MD became tv show?
Instead of Twin Peaks: The Return we get in the early 2010's Inland Empire as a limited tv event for Netflix.

Alright niggers, I want to let you know I've basically solved S3.

Cooper became a dreamer. That is, a magician, capable of seeing a way to a new world. Fire walk with me. In the current world, Judy was winning, Laura was already murdered. So Cooper went to save Laura the night of her death, to create a new world where she lived and could fight Judy.

Judy always knew this was possible. That's why "Sarah" freaked out so much at the turkey jerky: she was worried that someone had changed reality on her. As long as she knew what the timeline was, she was winning. As Coop says, "The past dictates the future." So for Coop to take down Judy, he'd have to change the past. "I hope I see all of you again."

But Cooper is not the only Dreamer. When he went back to save Laura from being killed by BOB, someone else snatched her away too (likely Judy, or an agent of Judy). What we see is not actually Laura being snatched away, but Cooper living through the world-shift. So Cooper indeed entered a world of his dreaming, that of Laura not being killed by BOB, but not only of his dreaming.
>>
>>87418518
This, I'd understand it if they told him to fuck off after the whole 18 episodes vs 9 debacle, but he literally said "no thanks, I want 18, but you guys have my permission to do 9 without me", and they still rescinded and let him back with 18. Doesn't seem like any bad blood at all.

But seriously why does Cooper lose his pin after leaving the lodge? Anyone else think he never really left the lodge? Like it was just a projection of him into the real world? I think any time you see Cooper with the pin on it is the real Cooper and he is in the lodge essentially. That's why I think the ending was just a big lodge sequence and we know the lodge is connected to dreams so I think the point is that it is a "dream" sequence. It starts when he disappears from the sherriff's station into the basement of the great northern but really that is just a part of the lodge. I think what we saw was the real black lodge and not just the waiting room. The black lodge is a journey through your own subconscious and if you can overcome the puzzle, which the Giant laid hints for but could only provide hints, you will be able to ascend to the white lodge. I think what we saw was a glimpse of Cooper's final journey through the lodge. Of course it makes sense he would meet people from his memories there, the point is to be the final test of whether you are worthy to go to the white lodge. I think Audrey is in a similar situation but she is an example of someone who hasn't found her way through the lodge yet.

Because they're unsure too by the end. When Richard shows his FBI badge to Carrie near the very end he looks a little unsure about it, doesn't he? The badge is almost even kind of toy-like and not the same one he showed at any other point.

The copies, Richard and Linda, can already sense something is amiss about them but Linda bails herself, or just becomes nonexistent, whatever, and Richard/Copy Cooper continues on, that really being the only thing he would do anyways.

Consider the fact that the next scene has Coop's superimposed face for 3 minutes while he realizes that his reality is fucked.

Before that you had your Tarantino-like shootout which was masterfully done and in e18 you have the Judy's diner sequence, again with well choreographed fight.

Lynch is alright, if not better than ever.

I said it signifies change and growth, not necessarily a happy or neat-and-tidy conclusion. That look on his face is weary and melancholy, but he is learning a secret, a secret that we come to know over the course of 18 hours + all what has come before. He might not be happier, but he knows more than he did before. Which is the key to growth and self-realization, which has been an important Lynchian theme since FWWM.

I see the good along with the bad/sad/strange. You seem to be fixated solely on your initial emotional response.

Oh, Richard is definitely not 100% Coop. I think he's some combination of Coop and his doppelganger.
You know how Bad Coop speaks at a much lower tone than Coop? Look at the interrogation scene in part 4. His voice is slowed down far enough so that the change in pitch is noticeable.
Now go listen to Richard asking the waitress to right down the address at Judy's. He speaks at a lower tone than Coop. It's less noticeable, but it's definitely still there.

Normalfags hate episode 18 because they want to be spoonfed the answers and not have to think about them at all. All of the plotlines were completely wrapped with concrete endings with the exception of Judy and Sarah Palmer, who may still be wrapped up depending on your interpretation of the ending.

>BOB gets btfo by Several Punches Lad
>Norma breaks up with Ed so she can date Jacoby
>Ed and Norma get married

>Audrey wakes up from her bomb-induced coma dream

It's considered, but I still consider Richard the copy that was made. We at least know that a copy of Diane was made as well. It's not like suddenly one spawned out from behind a pillar. Tulpa Diane established that Diane will see bizarre shit like ghost coal hobos and not say a word about it until much later.

Cooper magicianed up some copies, went the fuck home and spent the rest of his life balls deep in Naomi Watt's pussy.

My take may stretch thing but it does make a sense out of the mess of the ending and offers some closure on most accounts.

But who knows what was up with Laura Palmer whispering into Cooper's ear during the credits.

I'm serious though, I could believe Cooper losing the pin on the way into the real world but he gets it back in 17 after teleporting. There is no indication he "found" it. I actually think I might be on to something. Hawk said the black lodge was a place you pass through on the way to perfection which I assume is the white lodge he also said it was where you meet your shadow self this is obviously the doppleganger. I think after Cooper defeated the doppleganger he was now ready for the real trial of the black lodge. It would make sense why he was allowed to "leave" (in part) in the first place because it was time for him to face his shadow self. After that he has to face the lodge itself which I think is "Judy" and that's what the journey at the end was. It was a series of trials to test Cooper. We are only shown the beginning of it though we won't know what it is like when or if he passes them. I don't think it's an accident Hawk was so important, it's because his tribe understood the lodge and it's true roll in the universe.

An innocent small town high school girl that everyone loves is murdered, and a shining beacon of humanity who works for the FBI is sent to investigate, Turns out there's a ton of seedy shit and some sort of extradimensional happenings going on in this place.

It's loved half because of it's sometimes loveable and unorthadox characters and themes, sometimes dark and oppresive characters and themes, and the (at the time) very different way of presenting it's story. (This happened again with S3 btw).

I always recommend you watch up to the end of the third episode (pilot (NOT the International version, DO NOT watch that), then the next two). If you aren't interested by the end of that, it might not be for you. If you are, buckle up for the ride sonny jim.

I never really understood what happened to him. if the aim was to trap Mr C so he could be returned to the lodge, why didn't we see Richard end up there? It's pretty obvious Mr C can't be killed with Bob inside of him because the woodsmen turn up and revive him, so what was the point of the trap?

How retarded are you?
>>
>>87419323
Go ahead and refute it instead of rambling, please.
>>
>>87419159
I don't think the stuff with Ben and his secretary was ever meant to go anywhere
The guy who was supposed to meet Andy was the owner of the pickup truck which Richard used to kill the kid, and the wide open door to his house is an implication that Richard killed him to cover his tracks
I guess that Becky's husband killed her and then killed himself while under effect of the drugs that Red was dealing in twin peaks, though yeah it's never made 100% clear and the reaction of Bobby and Shelley is never shown
>>
>>87419017

>I guess that Becky's husband killed her and then killed himself
I doubt this, when Becky calls Shelly in part 13 she says that Steven hasn't been home for days, this probably precipitates Steven's suicide, as opposed to Becky's rampage in part 11, even though Bobby's scene later in the episode seems to come before said rampage.
In short the timelines are fucked, but I don't think she's dead.
>>

>>87419017
That's a strawman argument, just because you make the resolution stupid garbage it doesen't show that any kind of resolution is stupid garbage. An actual writer would have actually worked on making the conclusion satisfying, making shit on porpouse while disregarding the past 16 hours isn't a show of writing talent in any way shape or form
>>
>>87419289
That's implying Leland is still with BOB in that timeline/al-verse/whatever. Also, if he is, why would Leland take Ronette if Laura isn't there? He didn't give a shit about her and he initially took a risk anyway since Leo and Renault were there (though drunk/bashed in the head), but that was him being ready to finally deal with Laura. And if Laura never became a whore, why would Llenad go there to the cabin in the first place.
>>
>>87419421
It might have actually been good if they were limited to 9 episodes.

>>
>>87419406
well. if Bob was defeated in all dimensions then Laura is alive right?
>>
>>87419458
Any meaning about the ending is a headcanon
>>
>>87419406
I like the ending we got but the evil ball of BOB was super, super fucking stupid. All I can imagine is that Frost secretly demanded to direct that scene and Lynch let him just for old time's sake and to shut him up.

I ain't gonna argue with you, dude. I thought the show was one of the most incredible things we'll see in our lifetime on television, but I definitely don't want another season.

the more you and the wider majority hate it, the more I can treat it like a dirty little secret or taboo fetish (like auto-erotic asphyxiation, or rather, a good-old fashioned LYNCHING).
>>
>>87418799
I'm going to admit, getting rid of the owls was really not great. There was so much potential for them.

>also totally not ending with Mr. C getting back up again like before just before Cooper puts the ring on him, and grabbing Cooper's hand to take his ass to the lodge too with it ending in Cooper chasing Mr. C down like what happened before. Com'on, it was so obvious to do

Is there a way to differentiate between what's Lynch's and what's Frost's contribution to Twin Peaks? I used to think more of the character drama from the original seasons was Frost, while Lynch focused more on the Cooper and Lodge stuff, but after The Return I'm not too sure.
>>
>>87419490

Nothing overt about a murder here, if anything it recalls the scene in part 10 where Steven hits Becky and says I "know what you did"

Frost: the townies and character development, theosophy elements (lodges, dugpas, Dweller on the Threshold), Americana and UFO/government conspiracies, Windom Earle

Lynch: all the spirits and worlds, electricity, corn, dreaming, Buddhism/reincarnation

If you look at it all the Black/White Lodge stuff was developed when Lynch wasn't there. I think it's only mentioned a total of twice (Annie, then bad Coop) in stuff Lynch directed or wrote.
>>
>>87417012
That was the impression I got when I rewatched it. That she said "My father killed me" again, as in, the evil that was done to her cannot be undone regardless of time travel shenanigans. That's why Coop looks so sad.

Either that or she whispered something for more awful that made Coop look that sad.
>>
>>87419600
>lynch finally realising ronnie the rocket with the las vegas/dougie arc
>gorgeous cinematography
>lynch spending a good chunk of showtime's money on getting underrated musical guests airtime and publicity
>episode 8
>that harrowing conclusion
>plot threads which don't go anywhere but nevertheless contribute to the rich world-building
>an admirable lack of consideration towards satisfying die-hard audiences

I'll admit, the only bits that kinda sucked were the fbi sequences. Don't feel like albert was as insultingly charming as he used to be, and tammy was a wooden plank. but beyond that it was brilliant

This. The ultimate evil from the old series was destroyed by a literally who with a magic glove? That was given to him from the giant who gave him direct instructions, rather than the usual cryptic clues? This was capeshit-tier.

It's besides the point, and Lynch wanted to underline this. Killing BOB truly resolves nothing as the evil persists and there will always be a "BOB", the empty happy reunion with Cooper's face of dread superimposed over it underlines the idea with a big old red marker.

Suddenly aware of the false victory, Cooper "awakens" from the dream of a happy ending. He leaves the dream to attempt to walk with fire one more time, to try to undo the evil at its core.

Does he fail or succeed? Despite all of the theories that seems to be an open question

There isn't much to go on.

In Secret History, Nixon shows some dudes a thing in a secret base that looks like the Experiment. But it's unclear if it was created or if it already existed but was then captured and experimented on.

I have a feeling Frost might expand upon it in his next book, since he talked about it in the first one.
