Part 17 and 18 are good episodes, but not a good conclusion.

Switching the conflict from Cooper v Cooper to Laura v Judy and spending the entire last episode in a world the audience is entirely unfamiliar with while discarding at least a dozen plot threads completely with zero resolution does not make for a good conclusion.

Call me a pleb if you want, I loved every episode. 17 and 18 work by themselves as individual episodes, but as a conclusion they do not.

In the original series (as much as I hate to compare The Return to it) and FWWM, everything leads up to the conclusion and has an explicit purpose in understanding it. In The Return, the first 16 episodes set up a conflict that never even comes to fruition, then we're dropped into a world that hasn't been established at all.

Philip Jeffries says "he'll remember the unofficial version", meaning that Gordon Cole will be one of the few people in the NT who remember there was once an OT.

Interesting point, we see Nu-Dougie arrive back with his family AFTER the OT has been changed into the NT. (though "after" has a pretty tenuous meaning in the show). So even in the NT, Janey-E and Sonny Jim had a version of Coop as their husband/father.

I have been working pretty solidly so haven't been keeping up with theories that may have developed over the last few days, but something hit me while at work today.

What if Dougie Cooper is Broken Cooper? The shell of a man who has realised he got everything wrong and wasn't good enough to stop whatever evil it was he had to. Maybe he had a total mental, spiritual and physical breakdown after the moment where he says 'What year is this?' and went catatonic? He begins to act like Dougie just before asking that question; unsure and unsteady and almost childlike.

We know that the timelines inter-cross and are convoluted, so it could make sense. I read somewhere that Cooper asking the year means the Ep. 18 ending was in the 'past', so Dougie is the present day shell of post-breakdown Cooper.

The Return is to Twin Peaks what Prometheus was to Alien.
Lynch took some irrelevant details (Laura shouting, jumping manor like dead engineer from alien) and created whole pointless story around it.

The jumping man is a teleporter. He was created when Judy entered our world through the atomic bomb and puked up bob.
