What's the final /tv/ verdict on this show?

Phenomenal up until the last few minutes of episode 17, then full hack job at the end.

Shit. If Lynch wanted to make something new he should have done an original movie

Waste of time. Only intellectually insecure hipsters defend it. Just check out /tpg/. Reddit spacing everywhere and people patting themselves on the back for coming up with dumb theories that will never be proven right because Lynch just throws shit at the wall and pretends the bits of corn are metaphors.

TP will go down as one of the greatest series of all time. The Return has redeemed any misgivings over Season 2 and Fire Walk With Me.

so good. it was everything, more lynch, more nonsense, had most of the original cast, enough nostalgia but also so much more new. i know most people i know wont like it as much as i did, but I absolutely loved it. so happy and grateful he came back and gave fans something more

Wait a second. Hold the phone. Please just slow down. You're saying that the most important thing about art is how other dummies talk about it? Man oh man. That's a fascinating opinion that's going to keep me thinking for a while.
>>
Don't mention the plot with all its loose ends and wanky dream/alternate reality nonsense, and you'll be alright. It's full with daringly brilliant moments of visual storytelling, and the dougie/catatonic coop arc could be a movie unto itself (and is probably the greatest character ever to grace our screens). Giving lynch full creative control was probably not the best idea since the finale makes me wonder if he's going senile, but who gives a shit? I don't go to lynch for narrative coherence, but I loved the fact that it felt like watching a magritte painting in motion.
>>
>>87323562
Because there's two very decisive audiences watching this.

The first group are Lynch lovers who expected the unexpected and surely were rewarded with the final 10 minutes of the show.

The second group are the new watchers, who binge watched the original show and possibly skipped the movie because it's not on Netflix and are getting things explained to them by people on Reddit or in these general threads. They expected a happy ending with all loose ends explained because they've never watched Lynch in their life.

Frankly, I've come to just pass over any "it's shit" comments because they're from people who have no idea what they're talking about.

I don't think there is a final verdict yet. People are still trying to figure out what happened and how they feel about it. Could take years, who's to say?

All I know is that when it was the episode ended I had a tremendous feeling of tranquility and well-being as if a great weight had been lifted from my shoulders and my mind was at once clear and alert. I smiled and although I had no idea what I just watched, I knew in my heart that everything was going to work out in the end.

On the whole, I have a positive view on The Return. It lacks coherency and there are times where Lynch opts for laziness, but I think there's too much in the series that I loved for me to dismiss it.

The entire Dougie Jones plot alone made watching it worth it. The finale was also great.

It's not Lynch's best work and it never reaches the heights of the original run, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

I would actually think the intellectually insecure people are the ones aggressively shitting on it. I'm able to go along for the ride and enjoy stuff even if every little detail isn't revealed. And it's not even like there's no explanation. It's open for sure but there's plenty of ways to interpret the ending and this isn't a bad thing. Everyone though, even the people who end up enjoying it, are likely to have a kneejerk reaction to such an abrupt ending. The difference is between people who stick with that kneejerk reaction and people who are capable of developing a more coherent theory based on other info from the show.

>>
>>87325590
It makes sense for the most part. The finale is a re-examination and further reinforcement of the ideas explored in the Season 2 finale. Cooper is a tragic hero.

Whether it's a dream universe or an alternate reality or some combination of the two is not necessarily as relevant as that.
>>
>>87325809
It's like you can see enough to know what you want to experience but lack the ability to do so. The sublime escapes you, and, left at its doorstep, you hurl your invective at passersby to try to ignore your shortcomings.

>Does the series at least conclude or are they setting up for more?

It ends on a bigger cliffhanger than the original show did
>>
I watched Twin Peaks when it originally aired. Season 3 was a travesty on so many levels. Gone was the dark murder mystery juxtaposed against a remote town filled with oddball characters. Gone was the occasional dark and subtle humor. Gone was the sense that progress (either story or character) was being made every episode.

What we were stuck with this season was nuLynch with his long, tedious shots. Characters being le weird for the sake of le weird. Tons of side plots and main plots that went nowhere. A total misuse of a lore that's grown in popularity over 27 years. Having the show take place all over the country with numerous characters we don't care about. The list goes on and on. /tv/ will forget about this in a few weeks.

Good riddance.

I've seen them. But I'm not comparing season 3 to the other works of Lynch, I'm comparing it to Twin Peaks season 1 & 2.

That's like you saying "herr derr Star Wars Episode 2 is similar to George Lucas' American Graffiti, so it's okay because you don't know his film style"
>>

>"David tells me, 'Everything is Twin Peaks. It's all Twin Peaks,'" he says. "These stories continue—that's the whole thing. Everybody kept living and going on and doing their thing. It never stopped. Now we're picking it up again, 25 years later. Who knows if we'll pick them up again down the road, I don't know."
>>
>>87326309
You're right to say that Season 3 is very different to Season 1 and 2, but many of your complaints could easily be leveled at the original run.
>>
>>87326558
>you just described the original though
The original didn't have long, tedious shots.
Characters in the original were quirky, but the quirkiness served a purpose (to advance the plot, humor, being sinister, etc). Here they're just being weird or screaming all the time to no end.
Seasons 1 & 2 had some plots that went nowhere, but certainly not to this extent. Twin Peaks season 2 had a notorious troubled production. Season 3 had no such things.

>Gone was the dark murder mystery juxtaposed against a remote town filled with oddball characters.
The entirety didn't take place in a remote town but we definitely had the dark murder mystery of Briggs/Ruth Davenport and the quirky vegas charcters, cole/albert and the original cast.
>Gone was the occasional dark and subtle humor
There was fucking tons of it. Not even sure where to begin with this one. This season has been hilarious and dark.

>Gone was the sense that progress (either story or character) was being made every episode.

Again, what show were you watching? We had multiple intriguing story arcs that were loosely tied together by a single mysterious murder that over time tightened together.

a long awaited return to a cult tv show could have been nothing but 18 hours of member berries (which is obviously what some people wanted, judging by the 'muh answers' complaints). Instead, it was a new story with some familiar elements that is just as unique as the original series when it first aired

lynch clearly only cared about getting revenge for abc forcing him to reveal the murderer when he never intended to, and now he's got it. i was expecting it from the start so the ending was pretty satisfying to me. and i'm not saying that lynch is necessarily a genius for it, but he managed to subvert tv entertainment at it's core and make something unique, whether you think it's good or bad

You faggots are a bunch of blind followers of Lynch who won't accept that "Twin Peaks: The Return" is a total disaster. This is the final proof that rebooting old series is a really *really* bad idea, since not even Lynch can do it right.

TPTR is not Twin Peaks: it's a bland, sad, and pathetic attempt of self-celebration in the form of an artificial continuation of an unfinished old work. So old that you, the creator, can't even remember correctly. Ironically, at a metalanguage level, the topics of this reboot perfectly reflect what reboots per se are: concretely, a doppelganger, product of a creative void. It's not Cooper who is lost here, it's David Lynch himself. Maybe this is his unconscientious talking...

I will tell you one thing, /tv/: after watching the first episode I was actually deceived for a moment, as I thought it was going to be great; maybe it was going to be more in the direction of FWWM, but I was OK with that. But then, after episode two I started to realize what was really going on here. At episode three, I started to cry and almost turned off my TV, as I finally understood what was happening here: it was the dead of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

I liked it, it left me with many questions. It left me really having to gather my thoughts. The last shot, honestly it terrified me, it got a real emotional reaction out of me. I don't quite understand what I watched, but I have some idea. I would be fine with Twin Peaks ending like this. The ending almost mirrored the ending of FWWM, but Cooper had a very different fate. I'll probably rewatch the season at some point in the future.

If we're just talking The Return then I thought it was mostly excellent, but some of it bothered me on a technical level, mostly just the effects, and I thought One Punch Lad vs. BOB was extremely underwhelming for that reason. I also wasn't too fond of Diane being Cooper's main love interest, it felt a bit sudden and I wasn't really invested in their relationship, didn't help that Dern looked like a clown with the red hair. Other than that I loved it, I wouldn't have been opposed to having a couple more moments where Cooper just got to be Cooper, but I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily that that didn't happen.

I just watched the two final episodes. I might've been biased since I first went to /tv/ and saw a thread titled "disappointing finale" and immediately escaped from here in fear of spoilers. So I might've had time to prepare for fact that answers weren't given and more mysterious shit was about to go down.

Think finale was moody and fitting ending to twin peaks: r. Only thing I had issue with was the fight against bob-ball, surprisingly nothing else really felt pointless. It was two characters meeting again in another time and another place, trying to connect to past without glimmer of hope. Very sad ending which shows that coop fell deeper in the vicious circle in the world that he understands little of

its weird to explain but after episode 16 I kinda "feared" it would just reveal everything and cooper would explain how he drifted beyond universes and everything would turn up into more x-files stuff than the surreal horror zone I connect twin peaks with. But instead it threw me deeper into lonely dreamworld like a nightmare would.

>ever knowing what happened
See, this is why I was honestly pretty content before this just having Season 1 be the only part of the canon for me. It's not about knowing what happened. Forcing that knowledge led to the trainwreck that was Season 2. The lore shit was off the charts in Season 3, I would argue to its detriment, but just because it didn't lay all of its cards out in the table doesn't mean it's better if we know. Hell, they already made Twin Peaks and its world feel small and silly enough by making LITERALLY EVERYTHING WAS OR IS DONE FOR A REASON ACCORDING TO A 25 YEAR PLAN and all of the dumb hooks they decided to hook back on.

Contrary to what was said before, Season 3 was a little too obsessed in dropping in and tying up hooks. Season 3 had a lot of good in it, and I'm glad we got it, but it was at its worst when it was going between threads old and new trying to collect in into some huge meaningful tapestry to show the viewer. That's not what made Twin Peaks work, that's not what makes Lynch's other films work.
>>
They overpromised so many shit. The evil cooper standoff was a fucking joke. And everthing was meaningless even if its the past. This is what happens when you write shit and dont know how to end it. At least they had a plan from the start with Lost
