>no set design, feels empty and lifeless
>no interesting ideas for storylines and generally bad writing
>relies on gimmicks only instead
>those are unoriginal or just bad, unfortunately ("fuck you, albert", glove, andy and lucy, coordinates, riddles, ...)
>bad acting (Bell, Lynch, Horse, Robertson, Dern, ...)
>dull characters (one-dimensional at best)
>storylines and characters are introduced for no purpose
>everything is supposed to weirdly connect and make sense
>shot in digital in a way that doesn't compensate for the technology's disadvantages (looks bad)
>roadhouse scenes (out of place, badly shot, the songs, the bands, the extras, ...)
>student-tier storytelling/editing (characters are shown walking up complete sets of stairs)
>stretched out needlessly, long takes have no particular effect
>everything above is literally cringe-tier in concept and implementation
>obviously delusional and/or inexperienced fanbase perceiving it as particularly meaningful, complex or "deep"
>can't compare to the original series that doesn't have those problems (coherent/complex and beautiful sets, costumes and make-up/well shot/well acted/well written/magnificent multi-dimensional characters and character relations, music, storylines and gimmicks/creates a unique athmosphere as a result, changing the world of television forever whereas "the return" neither manages to do something established really good nor to invent something new)

we get to experience 5 different realities related to Laura Palmer (referred to from now on as):
1) The first "real world" in which Laura Palmer is killed and Dale Cooper comes to Twin Peaks (the universe of the first season and at least most of the second)
2) An amalgam world of the "real world" and Audrey's dream world, connected by the roadhouse (characters walk in and out of the dream world as a connected entity via the roadhouse).
3) The brief existence of the world in which Dale Cooper saves Laura Palmer, which is then destroyed.
4) The new "real world" in which Laura Palmer disappears instead of dying, which we see in only three scenes (the road after the day/night switch, the motel, and the scene where Pete fishes).
5) The new "dream world" in which real world Laura is trapped in Odessa Texas as a different person. So it turns out the woman in the Palmer house is the real life owner of that house. Maybe that means the "dream world" is our world, and the reason we see it lose light is because once Laura breaks out of it she no longer exists in our world.
SO: The Atomic experiment creates Judy, who is inherently untied from time and who creates a servant (Bob) who is a being of pure id to serve her needs.

>Laura Palmer was created to counter Judy. But Judy had a plan. Her child BOB was to taint & finally possess Laura. She possessed Sarah Palmer to ensure this happened.

>In FWWM, Laura defeats this plan via her own death. But to do this, she bound herself to the Black Lodge. But she was still needed to destroy Judy. And so Dale was given the means to go back in time and rescue Laura from death. He did this, erasing her death. Judy saw this happen and attacked Laura’s photo, and Laura herself. Laura was torn from Dale in the past, and from the Black Lodge. Judy sent Laura to another level of the dream: a new reality. Here she was corrupted again, remade into a killer. She was once again made like the pale horse: dark within.

>Dale still believes she can destroy Judy. He brings her to Twin Peaks; he hopes to kill 2 birds with 1 stone: return Laura to herself by destroying Judy. But when they arrive, the Twin Peaks of this parallel universe has already been tainted beyond repair. Chalfont & Tremond are the names used by a Black Lodge spirit: the grandmother. Laura is awakened to herself when she recognizes this darkness, the same darkness that has finally corrupted her. Dale and his allies have failed. Humanity’s evil is too great.

>Reality works like a dream. Parallel universes follow the logic of one dream giving way to another. Judy is slowly devouring the dream, as we devour ourselves. Our goodness, personified by Dale and the Fireman, is ultimately not enough.

I'm really blown away by the fact that so many people are complaining about Part 18, it was honestly one of the most riveting hours of The Return, and I can accept people not conceding to that but how the fuck was Part 17 better? Part 17 was awful before 18 came along and actually put it into place. The awful implications of where the story was going in 17 left me feeling so horrible before I booted up 18.

They made the right choice with that final episode, it was somber and served as a reminder that you can't undo anything, expecting Cooper expecting salvation at the end was a mistake, it was a mistake on the audiences expectations to think that this story had any larger significance than the abuse of a young woman.

What this season did was try and mislead audiences into thinking it did, thinking there was a significance to it, that things would wrap up and have resolution, that things could be undone, that altering the past is good.

No, at the end she still remembered it and they're now left in torment lost in a world that isn't their own.

However imagine this:

>They stop talking with the new owner of the house and go outside
>Instead of the whole thing where Cooper is completely disoriented and confused, they walk up to the place where the person who recorded that leak would be
>They find this person with a camera or a phone, or whatever it was that was recording it
>They just all laugh and point at the camera, including the guy recording it

The Diane romance subplot was bad.

In FWWM and original series Diane and Coop relationship were professional. Why would Coop sent a doppelganger back to Naomi watts, and pick Diane as his sidekick in a mission to save Laura?

Does anyone aside from Carrie Page and the Tremond actually say their name in episode 18?

Cooper could be Richard and Diane being Linda aren't too far-fetched if Laura is Carrie. They might have had a completely different relationship then what we saw. But the more important part is the doppelganger that Diane sees.

>>87305674
It's to show a more realistic take on pure, innocent hero types who want to save everyone. Cooper's good intentions are a strength just as much as they are a weakness. He literally had the best possible ending in 17; he got the girl, saved the world and made so many new friends along with meeting his own led ones, but that wasn't enough because Laura was still "suffering" so he had to give her a happy ending.

So he decided to trust spirits/demons with a track record for being deceitful and went back and overcomplicated things, and surprise, he ruined things for everyone. Now no one gets a happy ending.

Imagine being a pleb that watched the season expecting a nice and satisfying ending and not one of the best lynching experiences of the century. I haven't felt like this since I saw Mulholland Drive for the first time. I'd rather have the bone chilling horror of that final scene (Coop panicking, that otherworldly scream coming from the house, Laura screaming and lights going off, those ending credits) than any "coffee and cherry pie" scene for the finale. This one is on par with "How's Annie?" imo.

That Cooper's good intentions can't save anyone, he's essentially so arrogant and headstrong about saving Laura and the town in general that he doesn't acknowledge the fact that his meddling against supernatural forces is an impossible battle.

Even in the very end, the only thing he gleams from the fuckiness of going to the Palmer house is that he doesn't know what year it is. Time has nothing to do with it, he's in a whole other reality.

There are far too many people that are crying about the implications of Part 17, without taking 18 into context.

I see so many people saying this has ruined the entire show by messing with the timeline and making Laura an angelic and god like figure, but did people not fucking pay attention to Part 18? It did everything in its power to deconstruct the idea that there is any significance to their story and that anything can be done to "save" anybody.

It was the bleakest hour of the entire show, the hour that felt the most like Fire Walk With Me. How could you finish that episode and think "Man, how could they do this? How could they undo her story and stomp on the original show"

That is absolutely not what it did. Look at how Cooper hopes to find resolution at the house, he's absolutely crushed to find that there is none for him. There is no ultimate answer, to simple solution, Cooper was out of his element he couldn't save Laura then, and he couldn't now.
>>
Dale Cooper is a sad little man fixated on rescuing a dead girl.
So obsessed with her that he would destroy everyone's lives to bring her back

>>
Lynch did it. He got people to stop memeing and instead create a dialogue about the ending.
>>

>>
>>87305984
Everyone expected a simple bittersweet ending where Out of Sand starts playing as Coop realizes has lost all those years and friends, but the mystery would at least reach some conclusion.
Instead Coop refused to accept this and fucked with reality by trying to prevent Laura's death
>>
>>87306010

The original timeline became a "dream" in terms of "if it doesn't exist, then it's fantasy, if it's fantasy, then it's a dream".

Cooper memories became "fantasy" because it's now a world that doesn't exist.
>>
>>87305710
I kept thinking about how boring Coop was with his plot armour and how he knew everything that was going to happen
He works better in a setting where he's the detective trying to uncover the truth and not know exactly where everybody needs to be at the right time so he can tell everyone what to do
Then Part 18 just pissed on the omniscience he had and ripped everything apart and I can accept the seriousness of the situation a lot better, how a young girl was raped and abused her whole life before going insane and being murdered by her father and there's no way to ever resolve that. When the .WebM was around and showed Coop holding her hand and walking up there stairs, then the Russian leaks showing the synopses, I thought it was retarded that they resolve everything and Coop goes to save a reincarnated Laura Palmer and brings her home
Ultimately, I'm happy that even with all of that crap Lynch was able to subvert my expectations

How does the ending of FWWM tie into S3? I thought the ending of FWWM was supposed to be the very end and I thought S3 would elaborate on how Coop eventually saves Laura in that scene. Instead I got a bunch of nonsense that ended in the complete opposite way.
>>
f you look closely you can actually pinpoint the exact moment his heart breaks in two.

Okay, so Dougie is Coop, who is also Richard, who is also Doop, who is also BOB, who is also Leland, not to be confused with Bobby who is best friends with Mike, not to be confused with MIKE (who is the other half of The Man from Another Place, who is also a tree), who is also Phillip Gerard, not to be confused with Phillip Jefferies who is also a tea kettle. Then there's also Diane who is also not Diane, and she is also Linda. Sarah may or may not be Judy, and the Fireman may or may not be the Giant. Then there's also Laura Palmer, who looks a lot like Maddie, and she's also Carrie.

Episode 18 and the whole series drive home the point that time isn't linear in that final sense. Yes, at the end of FWWM Laura was saved but that wasn't forever. Past dictates the future, Cooper changed the past and thus dictated a different future.

Throughout the entire show, Cooper has been a very kind, easily pleased, somewhat naive everyman who had a vague connection/psychic power with another layer of reality outside his understanding. This otherworld has given him cryptic clues that allow him to help his world in small, relatively earthly ways. The whole point of the ending is that he started to believe he, as a human/mortal was more than insignificant and when he tried to fuck with forces he didn't understand and REALLY do something outside his comprehension he utterly fucked everything up.

I saw James Hurley at the R&R in Twin Peaks yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay my bill up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen cups of coffee without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the coffees and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually because "It all makes some kind of terrible sense that she died… that someone killed her. I don’t know. I can’t explain it.”and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even know who he was talking about. After she scanned each cup of coffee and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by singing the words "Just You and I" really loudly, and then he took off in his hog.

exactly my thought, especially considering the fact that they got that whole scene out of the way in the first ten minutes. Episode 18 was some of the normiest directing in this season. If someone just watched episode 18 with nothing else it'd feel like just another show where they've only watched the finale, and assume they've just missed some context that would make the whole thing make some sense.

Ok let's say that you have the source code to a game called "the fucking world"

And then what you get is someone telling you "hey you know, I know at some point there's this scripted event that makes this character leave your party permanently, what if we removed that?" and then you just have a basic set of instructions without really knowing what you're doing, so you end up fucking up the entire thing

The conclusion is don't play god. Sad as it is don't resurrect people or travel back in time to save anyone, it can have unexpected consequences.

Cooper wanted Laura's abuse and murder at the hands of BOB to be erased from time. Taking Carrie Page to the Palmer house was supposed to reawaken Laura and establish a new timeline where she lived out a normal life in Twin Peaks.

As is Lynch. Coop's inability to save Laura is symbolic of Lynch's inability to ever give her character the beautiful story he feels she deserves. It all started with her death and torment and from that moment Lynch knew that whatever he would do to her story, it was going to end with her torment. Even if he undoes her dead, he can't escape the sadness that is inherent to Laura.

It's such a beautiful and sad love story

i'm just disappointed because it leaves everything open. it's like a story that has all the pages ripped out half-way through. i think lynch expects another season because why the fuck even end there? it could've ended in literally any other episode and have the same impact.

SO WHAT FUCKING YEAR WAS IT? I DONT GET IT
>>
Man the plot just got fucking stupid time travel is the dumbest crap imaginable. Sure the directing was good but the writing was god awful.
>>
>>87308061
it's the current year
>>
so why did diane come with him into the alternate timeline and then leave him?? why not stay in her original timeline?
>>
>>87308061
Is it future
or is it past?
>>
>>87308127
Maybe she wanted to help him. But then she gets taken over by that Linda persona.

>time travel

stop. go back and try again.

>...the fucking fact that SHE's somehow...

Yeah yeah, that word was missing. Strange that you still missed the point. Yes, the whole golden ball whatever stuff seems to connect her to those events. There is nothing what-so-fucking-ever to give the idea that cooper was suddenly obsessed with bringing her back to life or that we ran out like rambo without a jockstrap with no "plan". It's all "well, it could be" fan-theory-but-already-becoming-fan-fic bullshit.

i accept that she was created to counter judy, but i don't understand why and how that shows itself. wouldn't the counter to a being of pure evil be a being of pure good? what in her personality or actions suggests she's even a remotely good person?
>>
>>87308105
there was always time travel
did you forget Annie visiting Laura in FWWM?
>>
>>87308209
Maybe she was pure good but then she got corrupted. We only saw her after ~17 years of her life and most of that with Bob posessing her father.
>>
>>87308210
So what? Little visits are fine but straight up rewriting the whole series as never happening? What is this X-men?
>>
so what happened to audrey after she woke up or whatever happened? god damn it if i have to wait 25 years again to find out i'm gonna be pissed

Don't listen to this fucking idiot, he probably voted for Trump.
Also be sure to buy my upcoming novel "Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier". Pre-orders are open now!

Right well you didn't really elaborate that point enough.

And you're correct there is no way Cooper got the idea to save her. He just knew he had to get the key from Truman to open the door and go from there, he's just going by what the lodge has laid out to him, once he found himself in a different timeline he was just spitballin' what he THOUGHT he could do. I mean how does dragging someone cross-country from a different dimension who doesn't even realize she's Laura going to help? He didn't know that, and it shows. He fucked up big time.

god you fucking pretentious autists are insufferable. you literally judge a scene's worth by its lack of content. if it's boring and useless and was obviously just created to pad runtime then you think it must be great because the only reason you secretly think it's shit is because it's so deep and mysterious you just don't understand it.
>>
>>87306985
yeah he was actually a really shit villain. intimidating and well-acted but his character was pretty incompetent. what the fuck was he expecting to happen when he wandered in there?
>>
so what was Mr. C's goal? why was he returning to Twin Peaks? what was his unfinished business that he spoke of? i thought his motive was to avoid returning to the black lodge, but he seemed really intent on finding it for some reason.
