Yes but they could learn to. As far as we know there's no special gene that allows certain earthbenders to bend metal, it's just a matter of training.

The difference between IRL injustice based on how you're born is that there are a mountain of ways you can change it. Have a massive, ugly nose? Get surgery. Skinny and weak? Hit the gym. We don't have the answers to everything but most people can drastically improve their lot with all the advancements we've made. Non-benders are fucked, they'll never be able to bend.

There aren't really any special abilities that some people can do that others can't that can't be learnt and genuinely matter. I'll never be as fast as usain bolt but that doesn't mean I can't run.

But in meritocracy you are born with the drive, IQ and/or specific abilities that let you become good at what you're doing. A kid born to 90IQ trailer trash in 99.999% of cases will never be physically capable of becoming a theoretical physicist, no matter how hard he tries. Meanwhile the preppy kid born to 130iq businessman and mathematician will likely both be much smarter and also have a better childhood regardless. Is that fair? Because it looks to me like merit is often something you're born with and have no control over. I don't think fair factors into the universe and we have to pick the best for the job, but if you want to keep pursuing this line of argument you have to address this

Yes but both of those can be learnt. The flying air bender trick is learnt by giving up all possessions and wants. It's not an easy thing to learn (only 2 people in history achieved it), but at no point is it ever suggested that only some air benders can learn it due to genetics or whatnot. It's just really, really difficult and requires a lot of sacrifice.

My point was that IRL if you put your mind to it you can change most issues that people might suffer from through hard work and dedication. In avatar that's not possible because there's a plateau the non-bender plebs can reach and it still won't be enough to compete with benders. You might not ever get as strong as arnie was but you can get to the point where the difference won't matter unless in the most extreme circumstances. Benders dominate almost everything because plebs can't compete no matter how hard they work.

It was sort of brought up again in season 4, with Korra admitting that each of the enemies she'd faced had some good points which she needed to learn from. Other than that though it was just left hanging.
