>/who/ presents:
DOCTOR WHO: SHIT TRIPS Vol. 2
- The Anthology -

>Are you a true fan of Doctor Who?
>Have you ever written down a sequence of words?

If the answer is yes or no, then you are ready to contribute a literary masterpiece to the second /who/ collection of original Doctor Who-based short fiction.

/who/ did it once. Now, we're gonna do it again! Yet another entry in an age-old tradition of p̶a̶c̶k̶a̶g̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶a̶n̶f̶i̶c̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶g̶e̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶g̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶m̶ ̶a̶n̶ ̶a̶i̶r̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶l̶e̶g̶i̶t̶i̶m̶a̶c̶y̶ / celebrating the magic of Who and the talent of a community.

There are no limits (except the story must be at least 1 word long, and preferably not in excess of 10,000, it's short fiction you fuck).

>- Can involve any Doctor(s), companion(s), side characters, spinoff characters and beyond, as your heart desires
>- Can be in any style, whether it's "legitimate writing", "pisstake", or "shitpost".
>- Can be about absolutely anything
>- The main focus is on good fun in the vein of the wiki, although serious entries are allowed. (If you're going to write smut, maybe approach it with a degree of levity)

Stuck for ideas? Try starting with your favourite TARDIS team (or for timeliness, Whittaker 13th Doctor) and one of these authentic titles:
http://www.saberpunk.net/DoctorWho/DoctorWhoSerialGenerator.php
https://glyphobet.net/drwho

We are going to be starting an index on the wiki for the collection. Anyone can contribute, no signups/pitches required. If you have ideas, feel free to broadcast them.
The rest is self-explanatory. Format for uploading your work is up to you, as long as it can be conveniently copied across (and ideally don't spam long texts in /who/ directly). (Pastebin works well.)

BONUS: Anyone who wants to do cover art or "illustrations" is encouraged.

WE need more entries for classic as well as NuWho Doctors. Entries for Thirteen are accepted as well. Aug 10th is deadline

http://doctorwhogeneral.wikia.com/wiki/Foreman
^ Better source

On a more meta level I think a tonne of wind was taken out of Foreman's sails when Capaldi Who started and was a lot more noticeably...ugh, how to put this. There were less flippant things to get misconstrued as sexism and whatnot, and it was character-based enough it was pretty clear that Moff deeply cared about characters like Clara and Missy. So the "WE'RE REBELLING AGAINST SEXIST DOCTOR WHO BY MAKING A PROGRESSIVE DOCTOR WHO" narrative that Foreman was born out of got undercut really badly. What was left was basically the genderfluid genius' vanity project, which explains a lot of why it hasn't gone well since. What passion is left? Why does it need to exist?

>Deaths of two main characters are amazingly touching
Tbqh while it was sad to see Owen and Tosh die, Exit Wounds was a legitimately bad episode and ruined it. The "touching" part of Torchwood was all the actual character building, not the lazy knocking of it all down. Ianto's death was possibly even worse, since it wasn't just done because the actors were leaving, and the cast of the show was already too small - without him it just feels lacking, and I think Ianto's absence is part of why Miracle Day was mediocre.
>>
>>85599494

Neat comment on Sandifer's Jubilee post (abridged for space):

"This is what Big Finish is for. JNT thought of Doctor Who and its history as a series of superficial fetishes with no deeper meaning, and that all of which Doctor Who was capable was that superficiality. Haigh-Ellery, Briggs, Shearman, and many of the other writers of Big Finish understand the complexity and power of the images and concepts Doctor Who has developed.

A story like Jubilee can use the iconography of Doctor Who to show the power of an idea that has come to be treated superficially. And in the Eruditorum's narrative, it examines the social problems of refusing to take history seriously, which is also a look at the causes of the cancellation. The continual downgrade in quality from 1982-6 that resulted in the 1989 cancellation was based in having taken the show to be capable only of superficiality. In the larger political sphere, when one takes the ugly elements of one's history superficially, as empty signifiers that could never have had any weight, that's the greatest moment of danger of repeating those destructive acts.

To overcome the mistakes of the past, you must never take yourself to have overcome them, and safely sanitize those mistakes as superficial toys and icons. Jubilee articulates the show as a living history, an ongoing process. And politically, we as humans have to understand history as a living process by which we are the products of our destructive pasts. Only by understanding this element of our current identities can we genuinely become a better society. Overcoming past ills isn't a matter of learning to forget them, but including them in your identity in a way that makes you stronger through accepting the possibility of weakness."
>>
>>85599710
too happy sorry
>>
>>85599815
That's the same problem with a lot of Who writers. Guys like RTD and Chibnall are great at writing character stories, but they for some reason decided to do goofy monster stories instead for most of their Doctor Who work. They were gun writers thinking they could write frock.
>>
>>85599863
I dunno on Chibnall, I think The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood are great tbqh. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship is decent if a bit too ambitious for 45 minutes and has some shoddy directing. The Power of Three has some great character stuff the first 30-40 minutes and a shit ending.
>>
>>85599702
>>85599724
To be fair, Chibbers thought the Cyberwoman costume was shit too.
>>
>>85599843
Imagine not listening to music because it's happy.
>>
>>85599815
The trouble with Girl Who Died was that Tregenna couldn't just wirte a character piece because it was Doctor Who, so she had to stick a pointless alien monster plot in it, and the two things just don't mesh.

Not really. Broadchurch is only good because it keeps you curious about how the season's storyline will end.
Most of the characters are pretty mediocre. Whittaker has to play a one-note (and frankly insufferable) "grieving mother" character with no additional dimensions to her the whole time.

The comments here make me fucking furious. Some guy has a go for 3 of Shearman's audio stories sharing some similar ideas (as if authors having pet themes is a bad idea!?!?!?! Wtf. That'd make Shakespeare and Dostoyevsky hacks too, fucking idiotic idea) and Shearman himself shows up in the comments to agonise about it and say that idea was why he stopped writing more Doctor Who audios or writing for NewWho again

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
>>
>>85600018
I disagree honestly. I don't know why you think Whittaker's character is strictly a grieving mother, since that's really the role of Buchan's character. Whittaker plays a mother trying to hold her family together, who eventually hardens up because she knows she has to.

Final rage vent

THESE BLOODY STUPID IDIOTS JUST WANT DOCTOR WHO TO DO SUPERFICIALLY DIFFERENT STORIES, THEY HAVE EVERYTHING BACKWARDS, THEY WANT SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT MONSTERS ON SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DRESSED SETS EVERY WEEK, BUT BALK AT ANY THEMES BEING REVISITED

Themes and motifs have to repeat that's how they fucking work and pet themes are one of the greatest ways authors can examine ideas in depth ahgrhgrhgr this is why Moff is so interesting too, Girl in Fireplace and Amy Pond are same "basic" idea but look how much more he mines out of the idea by doing it twice

It kills me, it truly fucking depresses me, that there are fuckwits like this basically directly telling big finish "MORE BRIGGS """""SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT""""" DALEK SHIT EVERY MONTH PLEASE, NO MORE OF THAT SHEARMAN CRAP!"

I know your pain. It happens for the TV series too. You go on Planet Mondas and people are campaigning for a return to "good old adventures" with corridors and ray guns and generic aliens and no story arcs. For fucks' sake, there were even people saying that RIGHT AFTER Heaven Sent aired.
>>
I totally appreciate that Moffat is a brave guy who is exploring new themes and concepts and goes for risks instead of writing "INT. SPACESHIP." every week like 95% of scifi writers do.

But I don't think that going for risks and being brave works for itself, it has to be followed with good execution. I think Moff deeply lacks on that unless he's working on it for a long time (his RTD scripts, heaven sent, eleventh hour etc).

I'd prefer INT. SPACESHIP stories if they were engaging and good enough for me to enjoy them rather than something ebin and risky but poof in the result

The difference is, I imagine you don't go writing e-mails to Moffat saying "FUCK YOUR IDEAS, REMAKE THE ARK IN SPACE EVERY WEEK". There's a difference between preferences and being a dickhead to a clearly self-conscious writer. Moff's got thicker skin too.

To be completely honest, I don't disagree on the argument that a lot of Shearman's stories are very similar to each other. Most of his audios share the basic story of breaking out of a loop, so as I listened to more of them (The Chimes of Midnight, then Scherzo, then The Holy Terror, then Punchline), great as they are, they became more and more predictable to me.
I think Jubilee and Deadline are his best audios because they have more original plots.
(that said, the guy who insults Shearman is still an asshole and TARDIS Eruditorum is still a shithole)

listening to shearman's stories taught me that once an interesting mystery is explained it's no longer interesting, and so you should wrap up the story pretty soon after that point. chimes of midnight is great but once you learn the house is alive or w/e it's no longer compelling. similarly the worst part of the holy terror is when the baby is introduced but i think mostly that's because of how disgusting the voice is lmao

i dont mean that in a bad way either, it was a genuinely good lesson and neither of those were bad endings. its just once you get to that point, the story needs to end asap

Because you're aware that most people here view her and her content in a mocking/negative way. It's like showing pictures of somebody to a person that hates them. If you do it without comment it's basically a form of bullying because you're facilitating/endorsing hateful discussion towards that person.

I don't know if you were serious about your question or not but there's an answer to it.

You're oversimplifying what I said in order to make it sound absurd.

>You're assuming a lot about me and about other /who/res.
No I'm not. I didn't make any assumptions or assertions about your opinion towards Claudia whatsoever, and I've been a part of /who/ long enough to know what the general consensus about her here is. It's not inaccurate to say that there is a significant number of people here that have negative feelings towards her.

I'm not twisting anything though. I don't know how you personally feel about Claudia and I haven't made any claims about that. You asked a question and I answered it. You can bully or contribute to bullying without it being your intention. You're being weirdly defensive instead of just properly reading what I said.

It's disappointing to try and engage earnestly with someone's opinion, and get met with "you're being defensive", "I don't want to argue", "You asked a question and I answered it" and other dismissive statements like that. Or for a discussion to get framed as a hostile argument.

You made a claim, I responded to back, how come all of a sudden you're shrinking away from it after I took what you're saying seriously? This "you're defensive!" game is always tiresome because it's basically shaming someone for engaging unironically and earnestly in a conversation. Maybe it's a joke to you, or something you're not invested in, to claim I'm bullying someone, but I'll take it as seriously as I please.

Sure 4chan isn't always the most conductive place for being earnest, but I'm happy to engage earnestly on /who/, I don't care if that gets derided or misrepresented, because it's there plain to see and people can make up their own minds on it.

I agree. I'm feeling a similar feeling of frustration because I made my point and you haven't actually addressed it other than saying "I disagree" and then following that up with a misrepresentation/misunderstanding of what I said. None of my responses have been an attempt to dismiss what you're saying because I feel like you haven't actually responded earnestly to it in the first place. From my perspective, you've been the dismissive one. All I've been doing is trying to avoid having to restate what I said because I feel like saying it once should have been enough and I'm lazy.

Your post almost feels like you're making fun of me because it's basically exactly how I feel about you in this situation. All I wanted was for you to earnestly respond to my original point, which you haven't.

Just to stop us from going around in circles anymore where we both just tell the other one to respond properly I'll try to restate/clarify it:
The reason I personally believe what you're doing can be seen as bullying isn't because I believe you personally dislike Claudia but it's because you're presenting her to a forum where you know she is disliked without comment. So it's facilitating/endorsing hateful discussion towards her, regardless of your intention or personal opinion.

That's all I was saying. I never twisted your words or made any assumptions about your personal views whatsoever.

Ultimately I just disagree with your statement about presenting Claudia's content to this forum constitutes bullying because a certain subset of the forum (maybe the majority, although I'd hesitate before just assuming that, not saying you're assuming that though) dislikes her. We can discuss that if you want, I get the feeling both of us are probably pretty firm in our view that it either is or isn't bullying, but if you'd like to chew into why, I'm game, as long as it's clear I'm not trying to be hostile or anything to you mate. How can Moffat ruin 13 if he wrote Missy who is arguably the best master since Delgado?

Christ, how is this complicated?
Is this why people keep asking why my family reunions are so fucking multicultural?

He can't first and foremost because he won't be writing her, so such a thing is physically impossible.

Good character but definitely not a good master, wouldn't even consider her a master

I was just rewatching Deep Breath
The Doctor has a line where he compares the android to a broom that has had the handle and the brush replaced multiple times - hence no longer the same broom. He then asks him if he even remembers where he got his face and gives him a reflective plate to look into, the camera showing the doctor seeing his own reflection.
While this is obviously touching on the fact that Capaldi has been on the show before, I'd be interested in seeing this idea of "changed different aspects so many times, no longer the original anymore" brought up when 12 and 1 meet.
That'd be neat.
>>
>>85603400
>if 13 was written by Moffat
You mean in the hypothetical sense?

Then you should have made that clear to begin with. "How can Moffat ruin 13" was not sufficient. It sounded like you'd forgotten Moffat was leaving.

It's a very interesting idea. Definitely a parallel between the Doctor and the half-face man

So essentially people on here are saying that the 13th Doctor is going be like Gwen from Torchwood. Works for me ... ;-D
